It is with the utmost joy that I finally, after much intense labor, hand you the fruit of these past months :) I'm sorry that it comes at the rather awkward time of Sunday night, but I wanted to get this thing to you sooner rather than later!

Limit Theory Prototype ('LTP')

Compared to what I initially planned to ship, LTP is a beastly thing.  It's certainly not Limit Theory - not yet - but it's got a respectable array of bells and whistles and, in my opinion, makes for a nice little space combat mini-game.  Here's what you can look forward to doing:

  • Explore and conquer 4 systems
  • Pilot and own 12 distinct types of ships, ranging from small fighters to respectably-sized frigates
  • Suit up with loads of different weapons and armor/shields
  • Buy and command as many ships as you like; build up massive fleets and use them to steamroll opposing fleets
  • Build up your own personal armory with in-station storage
  • Save helpless ships from certain destruction, or join in massive conflicts to turn the tide of battle
  • Fly into battle with your (highly-capable) AI wingmen by your side!

How Do I Get It?

The digital download system that I'm using to distribute LTP currently has it in the queue, and should be sending you an email with a secure, private download link within the next 15-30 minutes!  That gives you just enough time to watch the tutorial and get excited :) Speaking of which...

If you're not the kind of person that likes figuring out stuff by himself/herself, then you won't like LTP.  The game lacks any form of in-game help system at this early stage.  In lieu of that, I've provided a fairly thorough tutorial video to acquaint you with the knowledge necessary to dominate LTP.  If you want to figure stuff out on your own, go ahead, but it's worth glancing at the tutorial to make sure you don't miss out on any features!  Besides, what else would you want to do while waiting on that email!?

Don't be shy.  I know you have something to say about LTP, whether it's "THISISAMAZING," "This is totally underwhelming," or "RAWRRR IT CRASHED." Either way, hop on over to the forums and use the appropriate LTP sub-forum to let us know.


Thanks to everyone, not just LTP-level backers, for helping me get this far.  As you know, it wouldn't have happened without your support.  I'm having entirely too much fun making this game, and I want you to be able to have entirely too much fun playing it (which is, again, why you should hop over to the forums and tell me what would make it better!)  But this is just the beginning.  For those of you who don't get LTP access, don't sweat it...the full game is going to be so much better!  LTP is just a little snack.

      Any chance of getting a re-download of the LTP? I've lost my download from earlier this year, and now, with a brand new computer I'm finally able to appreciate the LTP!

      Just called, it is a server outage with my provider (1&1), they are working to fix it. I am going to look into switching providers, as there has been an unacceptable amount of downtime lately :/

      The Forums are down currently. I am not sure what happened but it just went down 10 minutes ago. Note that only backers $75 and above are getting the Prototype. Beta pledges will get the Beta later this year.

      I'd say there are so many people trying to get to the forums it might be causing some overload. I cna't access the forums at the moment either, it just times out.

      I am just downloading the prototype now can't wait to play it. The video tutorial is outstanding.

      Hello, I still have not recieve any email with a link to the test version. And when I go to forums I get an ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved

      While trying to retrieve the URL:

      The following error was encountered:

      Connection to Failed

      The system returned:

      (65) No route to host

      I am sorry, but this is not a good sign for the backers...

      Ah shit! I was sitting on the toilet reading my emails and thought wtf the game was released early for our pledge? Basically ran to my computer to double check. good to see so many 75$+ Pledges though, Cant wait for the game Josh!!! Keep up the bloody good work mate.

      Hey Josh...

      Just wanted to let you know that this is definitely one of the best Kickstarter video game projects I backed (>50). I routinely read your dev logs (they are at… - check them out if you haven't already) and your commitment is from outer space. I have not seen such a level of transparency in any other project.

      When I backed this game, I thought that beta would be way enough, expecting the prototype to be little more than what could be seen in the original KS videos. But this is way, way more.

      Please don't take this as an reproach. You don't have to be sorry for being awesome. :D
      It's just... woah...

      Not a prototype-level backer, so I just want to thank you for putting up that tutorial video to show how the game is turning out. Which, as I see it, is excellent. Lovely graphics, I like the interfaces so far (although I admit I prefer a bit more of a traditional Space HUD a la Freespace 2), and the Fleet Command interface immediately made my Homeworld response perk up. That's an excellent pedigree to be evoking and building upon.

      The ship styles could use more variation (they all look like they have the same designer, which I gather is exactly the case), but since this is pre-alpha I don't see that as a concern for now.

      All told, very, very impressive work. Glad I backed this.

      What a wonderful way to start the day, finding that e-mail and download link in my inbox. I already downloaded and installed the prototype (even the installer is neat and stylish), and I can't wait to play and experience the prototype game.

      Thanks for all the hard work on all this, Josh. Though I haven't really been actively posting on the forums yet, I am an addicted lurker, and I'm greatly enjoying the content there. Especially the Dev Logs - I love reading about the various things that go into making a game like this. What a ride it has been already, and seeing the release of the prototype must be a neat and rewarding milestone for you.

      Anyways - it's time for me to start exploring the prototype environment! I'll make sure to submit my findings on the forums when I've collected my thoughts and experiences on it. Thanks again for the ride so far, and keep up the great work!

      Amazing job so far! Only had a few minutes to play while the kids were getting ready for school, but had great fun, Next time I will buy some weapons before I venture out of the space station ;-)

      only got to play a bit so far, but loving the promise this continues to show! (it'll even be better once we got strafing/reverse thrusters lol) So glad I pledged prototype!

      It took three attempts at missions, mingled with some weapons and plating variations, but I managed to actually complete one assassination:) If this is only the prototype...I can't wait to see more polish! I read over the dev blogs every so often to see how things are going, but my coding skills are very outdated!

      I really am sorry guys, I should have clarified in my post that this is for PROTOTYPE backers only - that was $75 and up..

      @Kevin - There's a remote chance - I do need to get a Mac soon and start working out multiplatform issues. I wouldn't count on it, but if I do get something up and running, you can bet that I will release it :)

      WINE doesn't seem to like this executable. Any chance at a Mac Pre-Alpha?

      @Jordan: I have heard that the installer does not like WINE, although YMMV. Legitimate linux release coming for the real thing, though :) Good luck!

      @Joshua - Can never have enough Joshs >:D And I'm afraid not, sorry, it's just too big of a logistical mess, + I want to reward those that made it in for the KS. Thanks for your interest though!

      It's all good Josh. As a programmer myself I understand the excitement when releasing a new product / new version and so I know all the little things you forget / don't notice when pushed for time :)

      And yes, I too wish KS allowed you to edit posts (like the mistype in my first post in this thread :) ).

      I got the email a couple of minutes after I got this kickstarter alert. The download worked, now I just have to figure out if it works with WINE. If not I guess I'll just wait for a different method, either way, money well spent. Thanks!
