The Final Stretch and the Super-Secret Tech Demo

Galactic Domination...Now in an Organized Fashion

I hope you're all ready to create and manage a faction, because I know I am, and we've now officially hit the goal!!!  It seems like just yesterday that we hit planetary ownership...it's incredible how much steam this project is picking up here towards the end!  Who knows where we'll end up??

Super-Secret Tech Demo #5

Yep, I said #4 would be the last one, but I was wrong!  I spent the last week slaving to get the engine running as smoothly as possible on my laptop so that I could record some more footage.  It worked!  I'm pleased to say that performance of the LT engine has more than doubled over the past week...so get ready to play on under-powered machines if you'd like to do so!

Thankfully, I've got a lot to show this time.  It's the longest tech demo yet, mostly because I've had more time to work now that school is out.  But I'm not going to tell you what's in the demo...you've got to watch to find out!  I'll just say that...maybe it will provide some inspiration for getting to the $200K goal! :)

Don't forget to watch in 1080p...this one took a whopping five hours to upload!!

A Month in Retrospect

Let's take a look at what's happened this month in terms of Limit Theory development, shall we?

  • Ship/station Editor
  • Tactical Interface
  • Landing
  • Carrier Prototypes
  • Station Generation
  • Asteroid Base Generation

In the beginning, I asked you all to believe me when I said that everything I had shown so far was representative of only 3 months of work, and that I could finish in a bit more than a year. Over this one-month period, I hope I've managed to substantiate that claim in your eyes!  Of course, the only real proof will be when I deliver the finished product to you...but I hope the tech demos have given at least a glimpse of the pace of LT development that is to come.

In fact, I'd like to go even further, and let you know that the development that you've seen over this past month has been unusually slow for LT.  Why?  Because at least 50% of my time has been devoted to keeping up with the KS campaign, answering PMs, comments, forum posts, Q/As, etc.  Furthermore, it was the month of final exams/final projects at school, so that took up a bit more time than usual. With those things in mind, I hope you'll believe me when I tell you that a typical month for LT is generally even more fruitful than what you've seen this month :)

Off to the stars we go! Will we be riding in carriers along the way? Only time will tell!! :)

As others have said, please turn on the ambient lighting. Also, a couple of extra staff members would help to make this game as good as we all hope. They don't have to be developers, just a QA/general dogsbody and a writer/content producer.

@Andrew great question. I would love this on Ouya! Big screen space exploration!

You said that LT could run on lower powered operating systems. Would it be possible to play LT on the OUYA?

    4. Victor Correia on December 22, 2012

I pledged a few hours ago without fully investigating this game, but based on the comments I feel confident you will deliver something well worth the money; plus I like supporting the small devs that show real promise. Two queries that may already be answered: will you be adding to your dev team, seems as though you may know other smart people that could help out? Second, will you have a merchandise online store post KS so that I can grab some tshirts, I was hoping that I could get one as an add on by upping my pledge but can't find it mentioned anywhere in the KS campaign?

Hello josh i just have upped my pledge in hope to reach the 200.000 goal. Yes, i want these carriers in the game. but how the pete cozens forist says it'd be lovely to see more of these gorgeous ships you're giving us. I'd like to see spotlights on the ships to light them up (especially the carriers and space stations) and maybe a system config item for ambient lighting so as we can all tailor it to our individual tastes.

You never stop to amaze me Josh, i just have upped my pledge in hope to reach the 200.000 goal. Yes, i want these carriers in the game.

And just as others have told, it is a few dark. Yes, yes, i know, the real space is dark, but You would put in there some eye candy tricks.

      Thanks for this great work.

Awesome video - just upped my pledge to do my bit for the 200k goal.

BTW, I second KahunaKevin's comments - it's all a bit dark out there. I know that some will appreciate the realism that this brings, but it'd be lovely to see more of these gorgeous ships you're giving us. I'd like to see spotlights on the ships to light them up (especially the carriers and space stations) and maybe a system config item for ambient lighting so as we can all tailor it to our individual tastes.

Keep up the good work Josh, and may Limit Theory be the start of something much bigger for you.

    8. krayzkrok on December 22, 2012

Beautiful stuff. I love the look of the game, almost over-saturated realism. And this is the closest this video has come to showing how you can just sit in space and watch the world go by, as you mentioned in an early interview. I knew when I read that that Limit Theory was a game I wanted to play, those moments between events that can be the most important part of the game, the ability to pretty much do what you want without being told what to do or where to go. LT actually feels like it doesn't care what you do, I like that.

I love the landing and the carriers. There were a few small things I noticed I wanted to comment on. First, your comment on no sunrise on an asteroid wasn't quite right. Asteroids often rotate so from the surface you do get a sunrise and sunset, just not one that lights up the sky. So many games forget to have their asteroids rotate, I though it worth mentioning that it helps with immersion. Second, I noticed it seemed that you could spin your ship around without having any forward momentum. Rotating while stationary is another thing that many games ignore, great job! Finally the landing is amazing. So many games have extremely limited landing locations, so the ability to land anywhere, even the ceiling or top of the carrier is awesome! I can't wait to hide on the side of the star destroyer that is hunting me!

why is everything sooo dark... you need to make it more lighter so we can see the cool things!! seems as if you're flying blind half the time... think star trek 2009... flares, cool light effects - sci fi :)

right now i feel like squinting each time and yet i still can't see any details until you pan and i get a glimpse of dark metal

Just pledged my $45, I wanted to wait to see if it was worth getting a beta key before I went pledging any money, and after this last video you really convinced me!

Just a question though, how moddable will the weapons be in-game? Are we going to be able to create our own, maybe even with our own colours/effects to them?

I noticed your comment regarding the "recycled explosion." Any chance the explosions will be PCG?

    13. Charles N on December 21, 2012

Limit Theory is looking cooler and cooler. I am so happy I stumbled across it! Unfortunately, I think it will be tough to reach $200K as well. I upped my pledge some this morning too! :)

:( Carriers look very impressive but i have a gut feeling we wont make it to 200k in 24 hours without a huge surge. I upped my pledge in hopes we can pull it off.

Josh the last video is amazing great job for that and other reasons I have already given my support for your project on Kickstarter Totally awesome

Great video (again) Josh. Thanks for showing this, the ability to land on an asteroid left me wow, but on a carrier... Well, I was left speechless. Keep up the good work.

I am just left speechless by what I have seen. I watched that whole video with my mouth open and thinking "wow look at that". What will this finished game be like if these very early developments are so impressive. This is going to be really exciting.

Thanks Josh for all the hard work on this final video update. Now lets hope we get a good KS spike in the final hours.

    20. Matthew Farmery on December 21, 2012

really impressive video, congrats Josh, that was amazing, really hoping that we hit that 200k goal now

    21. Kahuna Kevin on December 21, 2012

And if you do add lights to ship exteriors, it would be nice to have a dimmer control to brighten lights in pitch black areas, or turn them off completely when you'd like to remain stealthy.

    22. Kahuna Kevin on December 21, 2012

This looks great and I will probably up my pledge again to hit the carrier feature.

@Bruce I agree, those particle weapons need to travel much much faster.

Also, the general ship structures seems very dark, obviously you're in black space...but any chance to add small spotlights around the ship exterior to give them a but more POP against the void of space?

I would also say it looks like carrier weapons are traveling pretty slow. Feels like they should move faster, in my opinion. :)

      Asteroid bases! Cool. :)
Hey Josh, one thing you could do, gameplay-wise, with being able to land on asteroids/things is use that tech to be able to help hide from things. Like if you land and shut down your ship, it makes you harder to locate.
