Gameplay Preview

Hi everyone!  It's incredible that we're going to be funded in under a week from launch.  I felt that it just wouldn't be right if LT got funded before I even had a chance to put out a content update...so I've put together a quick gameplay preview for you today.

There's nothing particularly new here, but I figured you might enjoy watching a bit more gameplay to get a better sense of how the game will feel.  I also really like this star system, so I wanted to show off the graphics ;)  I just got back to school where my primary dev machine is, so I'll be working hard to try to show you some brand new stuff in the near future.

Be sure to watch in HD 1080p!

(Sorry that it's a link, for some reason KS would not let me embed it...)

A Few Remarks Concerning the Demo

  • The background music is a work-in-progress.  It's just an "idea" loop, not a fleshed-out composition.  Still, I think you can get a sense of the kind of feeling that I'm going for with the LT soundtrack.  Ambient, electronic, and minimalistic.  I think that's the right way to explore space :)
  • The cursor (the tiny white cross) is placeholder, and will be replaced with something more appealing
  • There's no HUD yet.  Sorry!
  • At the very end of the video, you might notice that the explosion caused by the large ship's pulse hitting the small ship is a bit odd, and flies off at an alarming velocity.  Indeed, I need to fix it, there's just a small mistake in calculating the explosion velocity.  Sorry about that :)
  • The turrets are very rough placeholders (they're just boxes...). Will upgrade them soon!  But I wanted to include them so that you can see how they work, i.e., that ships will have fully-functioning, tracking turrets.

A Few Remarks Concerning Me

In the beginning, I think I was doing a good job of staying on top of everything.  However, Limit Theory has received a lot more attention than I had initially anticipated, and is generating a lot more time-consuming work for me.  Much to my chagrin, I've fallen behind on responding to emails, private messages and forum posts.  I sincerely apologize, and I hope that you all can be patient with me as I try to manage the heap of incoming communications, while simultaneously attempting to finish homework and code new content for future updates.  Your patience is appreciated :)

A Few More Badges

Since there weren't too many to choose from in the first update and I'm seeing a lot of people using the same one, I'll keep releasing more so as to diversify your options. And you can use it as a way to prove that you've been following the updates!

In closing, I'd like to extend infinite thanks (what is it with me and infinity!?) for all the incredible support and positive feedback that I've received from you all!  I'm so excited that this game is going to be a reality, and, more importantly, that I'm going to get to play it!!!

~Josh

Hey Josh - any chance you can provide ability to create an "in game" jukebox akin to Eve? While youre music is also great - would be great if people can also inject their favorite tracks from great space faring genres while exploring the infinite galaxy - it would oppose the tedium (no offense - its just a large galaxy you're creating there - and tracks might get repetitious after say the 1000 th system :D )

@Nameless - Oh yes, by all means, you will encounter full fleet battles at some point, I am sure of it :) Remember that factions and NPCs will be fighting for control of regions, regardless of what you're choosing to do as a player...so I imagine you'll encounter some pretty cool stuff! Just be careful not to get too close if one of those big ships is firing massive energy beams in random directions..

I really like the fact that there are events that don't have to do with the player, like the two small ships attacking the big one. Maybe someone could encounter whole fleets doing this?

I woke up to Kickstarter's counter jumping over $48,858 - what an amazing achievement! And what a neat update as well. Keep up the excellent work. Really loving it so far! :)

Thanks so much for the encouragement guys! Keeping calm and programming :) And thanks Kahuna, I really like to too!

I actually really like that lo-fi filter you enabled.

      Josh, it looks great.

Don't stress too much on the feedback backlog. I'm sure everyone here appreciates how much work goes into running a (wildly) successful Kickstarter campaign, especially if it is a one man operation.

      Keep up the great work.

As many have said before - Keep calm and program. You have already achieved allot. So keep it up!

As AGN1964 Says....keep calm and program. You won't always be able to be here with updates and answering questions I think the great majority of people will be happy if you pop in post a quick text update even telling us you will be solid coding for a few days etc it is all a giant balancing act isn't it ? Two awesome videos and we don't even have 7 days that is just awesome. Plenty for new fans to get into after all you can't be a slave to the KS page :-) Good on you.

Fantastic work Josh. Great video update. It looks awesome. Can't wait till 2013 where we will get some prototypes.

Great work Josh, you've achieved an exceptional look and (presumably) feel to the game, a nice balance between interesting and realistic. Makes me want to fly around in it! Very glad to be a tiny part in funding this one, look forward to the updates, and congrats on getting funded very soon.

    15. Creator Michael Fischer on November 25, 2012

Keep up the good work, I am spreading word of your game to all the Star Citizens so you might have to hire someone to help you sort through your e-mails lol

If it's possible to get a molten planet or near-dead sun in one of the badges.. that'd be good :)

    17. Creator Matt Dubois on November 25, 2012

Awesome video! Already, the sense of scale provided by the contrast in ship sizes is very impressive, and I like the look and feel of the ships as they maneuver and shoot. And I can already tell the infinite, procedural nature of the game and the factions will cause the player to stumble across some pretty cool battles!

    18. Creator Matt Dubois on November 25, 2012

I'm impressed you've been able to accomplish everything you've done so far while still being in school! Just think of how awesome you'll do when you've got some time off!
