About this project
Help us keep film alive.
Like a lot of professional photographers, we're concerned about the future of film. The darkroom, the most important part of the photographic process, is slowly becoming extinct. Yeah, there’s a Walgreens on every corner, but their industrial process doesn’t hold a candle to the art and expertise of the darkroom. Without it the beautiful images captured on film could never live up to their full potential. Because for us it's more than just taking a pretty picture. It's about the process. It's about making art. Each print is a little bit different, like a fingerprint.
Film technology is slowing disappearing due to limited demand in a digital world. Kids growing up today don't even know what film is! We want to change that. We want this photobook to show a younger generation of photographers that the arts of film photography and the dark room are still around and hopefully convince them to keep it that way.
So what will this photobook be exactly? We want to photograph ordinary people and families, make prints in our darkroom to include in the book, and explain the photographic process alongside those photographs. The idea is to demonstrate the beauty of film, the process, and explain what makes it different from digital photography. So it won't just be amazing photographs, it'll be educational too.
What will your pledge be used for? Film, developing and print costs, travel expenses to go on the shoots, and printing of the final photobook. And when you pledge $250, $500, or $1,500 (see rewards list for details), you'll not only be backing us financially, but becoming part of the story, visually.
Through this project we hope to encourage others like us to choose film and become part of a growing movement of new, young photographers who choose to shoot without compromises.
Film has been around for a long time. For over 100 years it has been used to capture some of the most important events in our nation and the world. It's been an extremely important part of our history, now lets make it an important part of our future.
