About GLORIOUS WRESTLING ALLIANCE: PREMIUM SPECIAL
GLORIOUS WRESTLING ALLIANCE is a 100+ page comic book set vaguely in the world of professional wrestling. The GWA has been performing ably in minicomic form since 2016, and now it's time for it to graduate to true heavyweight book level.
Collecting material from three previously published minicomics (including GLORIOUS WRESTLING APOCALYPSE -- one of Paste Magazine's top 25 comics of 2018), and featuring 24 pages of brand new work, GLORIOUS WRESTLING ALLIANCE: PREMIUM SPECIAL will be a beautifully and carefully produced volume worthy of the pure comics power contained within.
Follow the behind-the-scenes going on at the world's most glorious wrestling promotion, as our cast of literally tens of wrestlers, bookers and hanger-ons navigate the pitfalls of life between the ropes.
Great Carp is a 7x world champion with a fish head and a heavy heart. Miranda Fury has a secret identity -- and needs the world to know. Gravy Train wants to overcome typecasting but is hampered by basic logistical concerns, and Death Machine wants his poetry to be taken as seriously as his piledrivers. See them bicker, argue, weep, curl up into little balls on the floor (happens three times), bicker some more, throw things, throw each other. See it all! It's a comedy! (PS: You don't have to care about wrestling to like it)
"Hicks’ sense of comedic timing and the economy of his six-panel pages are perfectly suited to the weirdness of pro wrestling, and as the stakes grow ever higher and the hijinks get increasingly wacky, Hicks still manages to imbue his unusual roster of characters with a heart you might not expect." - CK Stewart, Paste Magazine
"Glorious Wrestling Alliance ... is an object lesson in pacing, characterisation, visual storytelling and plotting. For what could be viewed as an ostensibly throwaway concept there’s far more in terms of pathos and poignancy going on just beneath the surface than the obvious jokey set pieces and wrestling showmanship suggest." - Andy Oliver, Broken Frontier
"Glorious Wrestling Alliance is entertaining as all get out. Quick and to the point, it’s fun and funny, bonkers and clever, well worth your time and attention." - Daniel Elkin, Comics Bulletin
I want to make the best book possible - and that's why I'm turning to Kickstarter. Everything save about 10 pages worth of new content has already been drawn, and so the costs here cover production of a deluxe, 120 page softcover book, sized at 148 x 210 mm. I've also been working with the printers to get a different one-colour colourway for each chapter of the book - replicating the feel of the original minis as close as humanly possible!
Rewards include a DRM-free digital version of the book, the physical book itself, a signed-and-sketched-in bookplate edition, an exclusive GWA patch (above), a bespoke poem written and sent to you by the professional wrestler Death Machine, and the online debut of the official bootleg Great Carp action figure (thusfar only available at comic shows in Europe.)
We've now hit both our initial goal of £2,500 and our first stretch goal of £2,750. This is amazing and I am super grateful for all of your support and interest in the book!
The book is now going ahead and, as we've hit stretch goal #1, will now have a fancy dust jacket. If we hit £3,000 all the books will become hardcovers! I've also sorted an extremely special and cool stretch goal for £3,300 which I will reveal soon.
Risks and challenges
As of writing, the majority of comics pages have been completed, with ten more written, thumbnailed and ready to go. At my current rate these should be done by the end of May, but I've left some buffer time just in case -- the plan is to go to print in the middle of August.
In regards to Brexit, I've spoken to my printers and they've ensured that any quotes we've worked out at this point will remain as consistent and viable as possible, whatever the outcome.
I've self-published all GWA minicomics up to this point, and while this book is a logistical step up in most regards, I'm confident in being able to handle all design, layout and order fulfilment demands - as I have done for the last four years. However, I do have expert help on-hand for any book design or fulfillment advice I might need along the way.
Outside of risk of external injury (traffic incident, piano falling on head, etc.) I see no substantial pitfalls. If anything does occur, however, I will be fully communicative with all backers -- you'll be the first to know!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
