This is my 2nd project, my 1st became the #1 most funded Sculpture project in Kickstarter history. My latest work entitled "Anatomica di Revolutis" is in honor of the developing 3rd Industrial Revolution. My art has been inspired, enabled, & defined by it. The resources & networks of the revolution are my tools, medium, & art gallery. I'm here to present my art within the context of how & why I make it, not on a shelf or wall in a gallery, but within the current landscape of the public psyche & part of a larger event. Please, read on....
The Art, Rewards, & Your Participation
I am asking for your support to empower my art & what it stands for, to grow my studio, add assistants, bring in new technology, & spread the word. I’m using Kickstarter to help put what I’m doing into perspective & asking you to participate on any level to help make it all happen (PLEASE SHARE).
The sculptural rewards are 3D printed polyamide which is essentially a nylon & glass powder that is fused together with a laser. See the listings along the side for the specific details about each reward. All sculpture rewards come with a hand signed project postcard. And without further ado, the art...
ANATOMICA DI REVOLUTIS: Representing the project is a 3-piece sculpture entitled "Anatomica di Revolutis" (loosely intended to mean “Anatomy of the Revolution”). Each component is designed to assemble together to present a larger narrative about the developing 3rd Industrial Revolution. The fully assembled sculpture features all 3 pieces & symbolizes liberty & prosperity through an empowered participatory populace. It is designed to hang on a wall or other vertical surface.
CRANIA REVOLUTIS: Represents the passing of an era & the ever growing renewal over the ghost of the past. It is a nod to my previous project as well as an offering to the overwhelming requests for a 2nd skull design.
PHOENIX REVOLUTIS: The wings are comprised of 75 separate mechanical moving pieces that are printed in their entirety as a single working assembly. They are symbolic of the mythical Phoenix rebirth & spring from the fire theme interpreted by my "tangle" aesthetic.
THE CROOKED CAIRN: symbolizes the burdensome weight of the institution that gives rise to the Phoenix. The crown bears the tentacles of influence. The edifice references the familiar "Eye of Providence" & presents a mockery of the "Hear No, Speak No, See No Evil” as symbols of corruption. The crossed heart on the hook symbolizes the machine's broken promise mechanism of operation.
- The "6 Primitives" Chain: Features the "Crania Revolutis" skull & the standard "6 primitives" used in digital modeling (sphere, cube, pyramid, cylinder, cone, & torus). It features split rings for disassembly & reconfiguration. The piece is printed in it's entirety fully assembled.
- Origami & Papercraft Skull Puzzles: I've designed 2 project puzzles. One is an origami cube that when folded correctly shows all 6 views of Crania Revolutis. The other is a more sophisticated papercraft model that assembles into a larger than life 3-dimensional skull. These are delivered as downloads via link (2D printing & assembly is required on your end of the innerwebz). To disseminate these 3D objects I'm using the grandaddys of the revolution...the internet & a 2D desktop printer. The puzzles are included in all higher reward tiers.
- iPhone Case: The jaw serves as a clip for your pocket, belt, pack strap, purse, sock, underpants, or karate head band. There's also room to stuff cash, credit cards, business cards, etc under the skull. RIP Steve Jobs.
- Project Tshirt: S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL
MULTIPLE REWARDS: It is impractical for me to list all the possible pairings of the rewards. If you're interested in claiming multiple rewards, simply click the "Back This Project" button & choose the "No Reward" option. Enter the total pledge that covers the all pieces you want (plus any additional $ for international shipping) & notify me using Kickstarter messaging with the details of which pieces you've pledged for & I'll note your pledge. I know it sounds goofy but it proved to work well on my last project & everything is documented.
The 3rd Industrial Revolution & The Digital Age
There is a revolution that has been quietly building over the last 25 years as the internet, 3D printing technologies, & now the crowdfunding platform have matured to a level ready to be wielded as arguably the most effective tool in the balance of the distribution of wealth & power that has ever been seen. The possibilities are staggering & pave the way for the innovations that will solve some of the world's most vexing problems. At a time when things are spinning absolutely out of control with global governments & economies, there are very real & functional ways to immediately start affecting positive & productive changes. Although this revolution is disruptive, it is not about Molotov cocktails & secret handshakes. It is non-violent & imminent. It will profoundly change the way we function socially, economically, & democratically. I am not kidding. This is an opportunity to take our place as an empowered populace. The Digital Age has met the 3rd Industrial Revolution & momentum is building...here we go.
here's some short video pieces that help further present it:
- The 3rd Industrial Revolution Begins: The Economist (my work is @ 2:01)
- How 4 Elements Will Transform Our Relationship To Things (TEDx)
- 3D Printing & the Culture of Creativity (my work is the closing scene)
The Global Economic Revival
In 1986 the internet mail access protocol was established and email started changing the way we communicate. That same year the 3D printing process "stereolithography" was patented. Since then, a growing global industry of artists, designers, manufactures, & marketplaces now stand to profoundly change the world & how we function as a global society in more ways than you may think or be aware of. The arts, the way products are designed & manufactured, the way the United States and many other countries do business (with China in particular), even capitalism is poised for a serious makeover. It's not just 3D printing or the internet alone that is making this happen. It is a perfect storm of these coupled with “creator” empowered marketplaces, communities, resources, amazing opensource projects (Blender, Meshlab, Wings 3D, GIMP, Inkscape, RepRap, ReplicatorG, etc), powerful free consumer level software (Autodesk 123D, SketchUp, Sculptris, TinkerCad, 3DTin, eDrawings, netfabb, etc) online social networks, & yes crowd funding.
Crowdfunding is democracy at its core. It provides public empowerment through participation. You benefit directly by being actively involved & making educated choices. The problems with capitalism may have been born from an immature society ineptly trying to wield a powerfully advanced tool. These impending changes in the transfer of creative power to the masses brings the opportunity to use capitalism as it's better designed to work. In a system where many participate in the balance rather than in the current class-driven, provider/consumer prom dance we call the economy. The largest 3D printer manufacturers in the world are American companies & the some of the largest & most inspiring creator powered marketplaces & communities (Shapeways, Etsy, Thingiverse, Quirky, as well as Kickstarter itself) are all headquartered in New York City. What the “Big 3” automakers were to the the 20th century is what this new generation is poised to be in the 21st. The ocean of sectors that will be using the new technologies & networks, touch all levels of skill & expertise & will be a boon to beleaguered world economies.
The DIY Ethic & My Connection
I've carved my little piece out as a sculptor creating forms that were unmakeable before the advent of 3D printing & the associated technologies (see here for my previous project that details much of what I'm doing as an artist). I'm not the only one. This revolution is the biggest event since the advent of the internet & it’s poised to unfold right before our eyes.
The public has more options of service & product suppliers, more customization choices to better fit their individual needs, & a substantially more powerful means of choice. Case Study…an overpriced $250 replacement part for a baby stroller can now (right now) be downloaded for free & 3D printed in stainless steel for less than $16. Creators are no longer kept out of the market place & supply chain by the high cost of mass manufacturing & marketing. Laws regarding patents & intellectual property, piracy, trade, & even the 2nd amendment are quickly becoming ambiguous & outdated opening the gates for a flood of innovation. Besides the growing number & easy access to various 3D printing bureaus, a DIY printer can be built for a few hundred dollars, ready to go manufactured machines purchased around $1000, & full-on high resolution pro-quality machines are popping up everywhere for the cost of a cheap used car. 3D CAD modeling software is becoming more accessible to the non-engineer & the community of modelers-for-hire has exploded. Things are happening fast...JOIN THE REVOLUTION!
See here for my bio & artist statement for details about my background, experience & art philosophy. See here for reviews of my previous project, it's rewards, & attention to my backers. Besides all that I'm seriously a pretty nice guy.
Risks and challenges
Regarding my abililty to fulfill my project obligations, my last project became the #1 most funded Sculpture project in Kickstarter history & was at the time #3 in Arts overall. All rewards were shipped & delivered within 8 weeks of project close (3 of which were waiting for the funding to be released). I chose Shapeways, the world's largest 3D printing bureau/marketplace, for my previous project & they will provide 3D printing services for this one. I have additional resources at hand if necessary. Foremost, all funding goes firstly towards fulfilling the reward obligations & all associated costs of manufacture, shipping & handling, taxes, etc. Remaining funds are earmarked for supporting & creating new art...the higher the funding the better the equipment, staffing, studio, & exposure I will be able to maintain. By design & indicative of all the tools I use to create my art, I can & will provide all rewards regardless of the total number of backers. Backer's risks with me are negligible.
