JUST ANNOUNCED: MORE STRETCH GOALS

With just hours left, we're mere dollars from $2500--our ultimate stretch goal! Help us get there, and EVERY BACKER will receive a stunning performance video of the three minds behind Thoughtcrime: Josh Gaines, Chelsea Fiddyment, and Ben Clark!

OVERVIEW

if you turn around I will turn around is the second collection of work from acclaimed poet Ben Clark. It is a collection of epistolary poems that explore, question, and document the evolving eighteen year relationship with his closest friend, Kate. With elegant, lyrical language, and through collaboration with other authors and text, Clark crafts a voice that is both singular, and choral as the lives, and words of others weave their way through his poetry. This is a book of refusal mixed with rugged acceptance, a book of forgetting, remembering, and re-imagining. The poem's seeming distance on the surface of their language belie the crushing pressure of their emotional depth. if you turn around I will turn around, is Ben Clark's offering, an exchange of memory, and story, and love. The poems honor, mourn, retreat into, and mark the space between two lives, and the pull of those lives in opposite directions. Across oceans, continents, within love and out of love, out of both desire and obligation, come lines of piercing honesty and bitter tenderness.

Clark's phenomenal collection also serves as the biggest release to date from Thoughtcrime Press, a burgeoning publisher devoted to gathering the most important voices in writing, and sculpting exceptional books around them. We are artists and craftsmen who believe in paying our authors first and more while offering our readers affordable, beautiful literary art objects. Your funding for this project helps us make our leap onto the literary stage.

About Ben Clark

Ben Clark grew up alongside his four younger siblings in the open fields and abandoned barns of Nebraska. He now lives in Chicago, with three of the loudest, loveliest ladies around. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's MFA program, and an editor for Muzzle Magazine, but has also worked as an English teacher, librarian, tile maker, track coach, and in a microwaveable popcorn factory. His first book, Reasons to Leave the Slaughter, was published by Write Bloody in 2011, and he is thrilled to be spending June back in Nebraska at a magical residency called The Art Farm. He is so grateful for your support of this project, and if you end up in the same place, will probably give you a hug.

From the book

asleep beside a dead tree, miles from anywhere or anyone

You say your life is all carpentry. A house

half-built, another child to raise.

I watch a film in which monks scoop snow

and speak to one another only

in prayer or song. For once, the women around me

sleep easily. You no longer need to ask

if I think of you. One of your children is named

after me, and you’re miserable most days.

Or so you've said. Where you live, my birthday

is a deadline for the dentists. On yours, in 1923,

they opened King Tut's tomb. Who cares?

I buried some part of you years ago,

and don’t recognize what

has grown all around me.

Shirt Front

This is basically what these awesome t-shirts will look like, featuring Gwynne Johnson's "new moon" screen/high quality digital printed on the front.

The shirts themselves are American Apparel Jersey T-shirts. They are light weight, super soft, 4.3 oz. ringspun 100% cotton, and made in the USA. We can make sizes YS-3XL all with reinforced seams for durability.

Fair warning: They run a bit small.

You, of course, will look better in our shirts than any random model looks in our shirts.

FUNDING

So what exactly are you funding?

First of all, you're enabling us to print this beautiful book, which we'll be sending to you and sharing with the world. You're also giving us the means to highlight Gwynne Johnson's incredible photograph series Milk Moons, which graces the covers and pages of the book.

But don't let our fundraising goal stop you! The more we raise, the more incredible things we'll be able to offer. We'll continue to update the campaign as funds come in, so be sure to check back and see what's new.

Cost Breakdown

  • Book proofing and set-up: $200
  • Printing and shipping costs (includes shipping Kickstarter incentives): $650
    TOTAL COSTS: $850

Thoughtcrime believes our authors, as well as our readers, are the press. We’ve been looking for you. We've found you. Help us bring this project, and this press, to life.

Risks and challenges

When dealing with any print work, it's possible that there may be issues with proofs that need correction before being sent to print. It's also possible that we may receive a proof of the book, the postcards, or the shirts and demand higher quality than what we receive, necessitating a change in printers. To address this in advance, we've built in some extra time for production in order to ensure that we get everything right before promptly sending items to backers. Moreover, we'll be updating the campaign page should any changes, difficulties, or marvelous successes occur, always keeping our backers in the loop. We value transparency, and welcome questions and concerns.
