This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, March 27 2019 12:48 PM UTC +00:00.
Dracula, king of the vampires. Vampires, the most noble of undead. For too long these classic monsters have been tweaked, bent, and reimagined to where they no longer resemble the classic bloodsuckers of old. But no more! Draugrs & Draculas brings the vampire back to its evening-wear-clad glory. Retro Draculas for retro RPGs! The kind that would make Lee and Langella proud.
Also, just for fun, we've got some undead vikings.
WHAT IS THIS?
Draugr & Draculas is a one-off zine for old-stye/OSR roleplaying adventure games. Dr&Dr focuses on vampires, undead, and spooky horror magic for use in your own fantasy RPG campaigns. The zine will be entirely written and illustrated by me, Josh Burnett. In accordance with the Zine Quest guidelines, Draugr & Draculas will be a 5.5” x 8.5” zine, staple-bound and printed in black-and-white. I estimate it should clock in at around 24-32 pages.
What's in the zine?
- Count Dracula himself, as well as his origins and current motivations
- Details on Dracula's lesser servants
- Dracula's deadly rival, Elizabeth Bathory
- Draugr—northern undead of varying degrees of power
- The Draugr class
- Rules for magic users striking a deal with the Devil
- New magical items of perilous power
- Pagan's Well, a small dungeon full of traps and treasure
- And whatever else I can fit in this thing.
WHAT'S THE PLAN?
This is my first Kickstarter, and my plan is to keep things simple and facilitate a timely delivery on the project. There are only three simple pledge levels. I am doing all the art and writing myself, so I will not need to wait on anyone else to complete their commitments. It's all me, baby.
Most of the writing is already finished, as is about half the art. I will be using Mixam as my printer, as they have a proven track-record of quality. I expect a fairly quick turn-around on the project.
Surprise Stretch Goal #2 ($1000)--Dracula's Castle FUNDED!
If we can get to $1000, the zine will include point-crawl map of Dracula’s castle! Dracula’s castle is a huge, sprawling edifice, filled with empty rooms and abandoned corridors. A point-crawl map condenses the castle down to just the interesting parts. It is not intended to operate like a regular dungeon-crawl. Rather, it is designed to feel like wandering through a crumbling gothic castle in an old vampire movie. Simple exploration rules ensure that skulking through those benighted halls is as fruitful as it is harrowing. Along with 30-plus chambers, I’ll also include wandering encounters and details on Dracula’s most trusted henchmen—wolfmen, hunchbacks, fish-ladies, and more!
Surprise Stretch Goal #1 ($750) FUNDED!
Apparently I lied when I said there wouldn't be stretch goals. But you know who else lies? Dracula, that's right!
The first two days of the campaign went so well, I decided to recruit a friend.
I'm happy to announce that if the campaign tops $750, I will be able to commission art from the lauded Bradley K. McDevitt of Dungeon Crawl Classics and NightLife fame. Brad and I have been friends for 20 years, and I'm very excited to bring him on board to class the joint up with some sweet Lady Bathory art. Thanks, Brad!
WHO AM I?
Hi, I'm Josh Burnett. While this is my first Kickstarter, this is not at all my first time publishing RPG material or zines. For the past 10 years I've been doing art, writing, and layout for Hex Games, makers of QAGS and the award-winning Hobomancer. I've also done freelance illustration for a variety of clients including Dark Wizard Games and The Wyrmkeep Entertainment. More recently I've started publishing material on my own under the JLHB Polytechnic label. In 2018 I published the first issue of my adventure zine Crepuscular, featuring the funnel adventure “Sanctum of the Snail.” Crepuscular #1 was one of the top selling 3rd party DCC zines in 2018, and is “already being lauded as a classic.”
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter, so I am keeping the project fairly simple. Most of the text is already written, and a good chunk of the art is already done. I am the sole writer and artist, so I will not need to wait on anyone else to turn in work. (Edit 02/27: I have added Brad K McDevitt as a stretch-goal artist.)
I already have a printer lined up, and I have a fine network of friends ready to give me support.
