We produce acoustic guitars of original design in London, England. No CNC. Just a lot of skill and dedication to the trade.
Funds raised will be used to purchase reclaimed woods to produce our ‘Green’ Concert guitar. The funds are needed to make a one off purchase of reclaimed wood we will mill down to then produce a limited run of eco-friendly ‘Green’ Concert guitars modeled after our standard Grand Concert design.
How We Sound
We firmly believe guitars should sound as good as they look. The music for our Kickstarter video was recorded using one instrument, a Joseph Lukes Grand Concert. No pickup. No fancy audio recordings. Just one of our guitars in a tiny room with curtains on the walls.
Whether you’re into folk, country, jazz or just doing scales repeatedly, we’ll fit right in. To add evidence to the case, take a look at our video below.
We make our guitars in house using only hand tools right here in the UK. It certainly takes longer (around 300 hours per instrument!) but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
For a technical and detailed account of our building process take a look at our article in Acoustic Magazine:
With every donation our backers receive our eternal gratitude and everlasting thanks. However, if you’re looking to get a little more out of the deal have a look at the incentives we've worked hard to create:
£1 Backers receive our eternal gratitude and a thank you email for their support.
£5 Backers receive a digital download of our Kickstarter video’s music track Little Shadows. Every sound on the track was produced using one of our Grand Concert guitars. Even the beats. We were impressed.
£10 Backers receive a digital plan of our Grand Concert guitar. The digital plan can be used to create your own guitar or tweaked to come up a brand new design that’s all you. Backers also receive our Little Shadows music track download.
£20 Backers receive a wooden plectrum inlayed with our logo in brass. Backers can choose between Wenge, Zebrano or Padauk for their plectrum. Each plectrum comes in a black, wax-sealed envelope. Our wooden plectrums are handmade and are the perfect gift for any guitar player who seems to have everything.
£35 Backers receive a handmade brass slide hand stamped with our logo and ‘Made in England’. We cut, shape and stamp each slide in our workshop to make sure each slide is of the highest quality.
£50 Backers receive our leather case designed by us as the perfect accessory. Our leather case is designed to work as a standalone case or with our strap providing an easily accessible storage place. Our case is designed to fit slides, plectrums, tuners, keys, phone or other small items while you’re playing. The case attaches to the strap when you need to have things on hand, like a wireless radio unit, and can easily be removed if you decide you need to stop making your friends jealous.
£75 Backers receive our Joseph Lukes leather guitar strap. Our leather strap is designed with a hard leather exterior and a soft leather interior for comfort. Our straps feature a brass buckle for easy adjustment and a brass stud for easy attachment of our leather accessory case.
£115 Backers receive our Joseph Lukes strap & case. They were designed to work together to provide players with the ultimate playing experience. Now you can look as professional as you sound and can stop worrying about where you’re going to put your gear.
£250 Backers receive a very limited set of our Grand Concert building plans hand drawn by the maker and designer. Each plan is drawn on 100% cotton rag paper and will be signed by the team at Joseph Lukes. These plans are perfect for guitar collectors or collectors of artisanal products and meant to be displayed as art pieces championing the resurgence of British made, artisan products.
£500 Backers receive a spot on our skills workshop. This is a two day workshop designed to give participants hands on lessons in woodworking skills focusing on hand tools and traditional methods. Backers will be able to bring in their own guitars for a repairs and setups portion of the workshop.
This class is based in London, England [Travel and accommodation is not included.] *The dates for the skills workshop are slightly flexible to provide as much convenience as possible for backers. Once our Kickstarter has finished a survey will be sent with an option of dates backers can choose from in June 2015*.
£1500 Backers receive a spot on our Joseph Lukes Masterclass. This is a five day limited edition class where backers are taught fine woodworking skills and construct their own Joseph Lukes Green Concert guitar. Schedule and Production
We are striving to provide backers with their products as quickly as possible while still staying true to our handmade roots. Once we receive our pledges we will need a month to have our supplies and materials delivered from our distributors.
Once we receive our materials production will begin immediately. We will ship items as soon as they are finished with our early backers receiving their items first.
Our Grand Concert and Green Concert Guitars will be on a different schedule with the backers completing one-on-one consultations with our maker and being involved in the process of designing wood combinations and other bespoke features.
Rewards will ship based on the order of pledges received.
There is no cost for shipping of products in the UK. The additional cost of shipping of products outside the UK is based on the actual price of cost of shipping with no extra charges for handling.
'Green' Concert and Grand Concert Backers: For supporting us in such a big way, we’re showing how much we appreciate you and are covering the cost of shipping your guitars to you.
Meet Joseph Lukes
Our ethos and mindset is purely:
Traditional Methods. Innovative Design.
We believe in and strive to produce innovative, thoughtful products made by hand using traditional hand tools.
Joseph Lukes is a company built on the idea quality products are manufactured in the UK. We are advocates for trades and local manufacturing. We strive to combine art and originality with function and usability to create products that are about more than just objects.
We have been producing guitars for five years and operating as Joseph Lukes since September 2013. The idea for the ‘Green’ Concert came about after looking at the unnecessary waste in the guitar making industry. We wanted to prove great guitars aren’t just determined by the few exclusive, expected woods. Using reclaimed woods allows us to use high quality woods that have a story behind them.
“Oh this guitar? It used to be a desk used by Charles Dickens in the 1850’s. No big deal.”
Our guitars look different. Aesthetic, geometric design, coupled with innovative acoustic principles have led to a guitar that not only looks fantastic but sounds flawless. Perfect for recording and live performance, the Grand Concert design is adaptable and unique.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. We really appreciate your support whether it be through backing us monetarily or sharing our Kickstarter with your family and friends.
We have been building our guitars for the past five years and fully know each process involved in the construction and delivery of products.
The biggest risk to shipping our products on time would be a delay in shipments from our suppliers. However, we have developed relationships with our suppliers over the past five years and have full confidence if there are any issues with our shipments they will be minimal and quickly corrected.
We have carefully considered processes which could delay shipping and factored them in to reach a realistic delivery timeframe for our products while still maintaining the highest level of quality.
We will make every effort possible to have our products delivered within the time frames set for each item. As with everything there are always unknowns. We believe transparency is critical and will keep backers informed and up-to-date with our processes, unforeseen circumstances and progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Before we launched the Kickstarter project the plan was to only have a class based in London, however, through our campaign, we have gained a lot of feedback and positivity regarding the Masterclass with the overwhelming problem being the location. As such, we have decided that in 2015 we will be setting up 3 masterclasses in separate locations in the UK and USA accordingly. Currently we are looking at having a London class, an Edinburgh class and a class in Austin, Texas. If you would like more information, please contact us through Kickstarter. Thanks for your continued support! Luke
