NEW UPDATE #2: 3D Printing Connection
WHAT - So what is exactly BrickItUp?
BrickItUp is an online platform for creation, navigation and sharing of 3D Worlds. As simple as that.
It could be defined as an user-generated content sharing platform for 3D environments. Or an online real-time block construction engine. Or a crowdsourcing environment for 3D information. All of them apply. Want to suggest your own definition? We would love to hear it!
When we first started thinking of this project, we realized there were similar platforms out there, but each one focused on a different aspect, while none of them united all these concepts into one. In BrickItUp, we wanted to bring the best of these ideas into one single unified platform, which made creation, navigation and sharing easy, accessible, real-time and free for everyone.
WHY - What are the main features of BrickItUp?
BrickItUp is unique in the combination of features it stresses:
SIMPLE AND INTUITIVE 3D CREATION: 3D modeling is a technique that usually requires a lot of skills and training. BrickItUp wants to make 3D creativity available to everyone by bringing it down to its core essentials, and wrapping it up in a very simple and intuitive interface. It won´t take you more than 5 minutes to get rolling, we promise.
REAL-TIME COLLABORATION: creativity is way more fun when shared with others, and this was extremely important since BrickItUp was born. To do so, we are using state of the art client-server communication technology to enable online collaboration with your friends in true real-time. This means that, whenever a friend joins you in BrickItUp, no matter where he is or the device he is using, you will be able to collaborate with him/her live, and both of you will see what each other is doing and communicate accordingly.
ONE CLICK SHARE: "I share, therefore I am" Beyond creation and collaboration, BrickItUp also stresses the possibility of you being able to share your creations with the whole world. For this matter, linking to your world and having people navigate it and hangout is 'one-click' simple. Plus, we are working on making it possible to embed into other websites, blogs and social media, just wait for it!
FREE! Whether if you are leading a construction project, collaborating on it, or simply navigating around, BrickItUp will always be free to use! Nice uh? How is this possible? See the funding part to find out more.
DEVELOPMENT - What is done so far?
BrickItUp is in early alpha version, and we have a working alpha which features the 3D building environment, the real-time collaboration engine and the database storage connection.
With this Kickstarter project we are seeking funding to release a public beta version which will include:
The general platform framework, which includes the main website, user management and dashboard, and per-world page.
The embedding of the worlds into other platforms.
A refined version of the 3D building environment with enhanced new features incorporated from user feedback.
FUNDING - What will we use the money for?
With your help, and many other peers as cool as you, we want to make BrickItUp available to everyone, and release a public stable beta version. That is our main goal. For that purpose, we need to raise some money to pay for the following items:
SERVERS: As you may have guessed, real-time connections need fast and powerful servers to work properly. And those are expensive. Most of the funding will go to provision for the expected server demands.
STORAGE: 3D geometry consumes lots of data, which also need to be stored somewhere. We hope to have as many wonderful creations as possible, so we are also provisioning for the big demands of storage space that we expect to have.
PLATFORM FRAMEWORK: we will also be allocating part of the funding to bring in collaborators to help us build the whole platform environment around BrickItUp, including the website, user management, etc.
NEW FEATURES: and the rest of the funding, including potential stretch-goals, will go into implementing new features that all of you, as early BrickItUp supporters, will be able to suggest and test.
REWARDS - What will I get in exchange?
Probably the best reward is to know you believed in the project from the very beginning and helped make BrickItUp a reality. But we also have some tangible rewards that we are eager to share with you:
EARLY BRICKIE: As soon as this pledge is done, you will have exclusive immediate access to the current alpha version, test features and beta tester forums, and will be able to start building your creations along with your friends.
MASTER MASON: Along with early access, you will earn a lifetime premium BrickItUp account, with unlimited hosting of as many worlds as you can build, 5 invitations for your friends to join you as Early Brickies, and any future premium feature we ever introduce (yes, really!). Plus a special 'BrickItUp founder' badger in your user avatar.
THE ARCHITECT: Also with early access and premium account, you will be part of the 'Advanced Architectural Unit' and will have exclusive access to the latest development versions, nightly-builds, experimental features and private Architects-only forum, to suggest and discuss features, bugs and improvements. Plus an exclusive 'Architect' badger in your user avatar.
And beyond this, the possibility of getting in direct touch with BrickItUp creators in different ways, and have a first-hand experience sharing time, insights and creativity with them.
SCHEDULE - When will this happen?
We are working non-stop on developing our current alpha version, but as soon as the pledge is over, we will open early access and start working on the public beta, to be released and open to he public May 2013.
We would like to very specially thanks Allen, Fernando, Lukas, Natalia, Panagiotis, Rafael and Rob for their invaluable contribution to making this project happen.
We would also like to thank Muriel Romero, who is responsible of our incredible artwork and the general image of BrickItUp. Please check her work out, it is simply outstanding: www.etringita.com

The best way to support BrickItUp is donating to the project. Check out our rewards and choose the one that better fits your needs and your possibilities.
But don't forget that sharing can be equally helpful, if not more. Let your friends know about us, and how great this project can be! Link us in Facebook, Twitter or alike. The more, the merrier!
Furthermore, would you like to get actively involved in BrickItUp? Whether if you are a coding master, a community orator, or simply want to figure out how to give a hand, drop us a line, we might have the spot you are looking for:
Risks and challenges
We have been working on BrickItUp since early October, testing concepts, interface and implementation, and our alpha version is pretty much done. Our biggest challenge now is refining it to the Nth degree and produce a pristine public beta with your help, as well as finding the right people to help us put together the website framework we want it to be inserted into. Fortunately, we are based in Cambridge MA with a huge community of designers and computer scientists around us to bring the highest energy and skills to the project. Anyway, any ideas/suggestions/recommendations? Drop us a line!
It could be the case that we still are not ready to go public in May 2013 due to project development delays. Bear in mind that in any case, since the alpha prototype is already there, instant early access and invitations will be able to be sent right away after the campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
