Jorvik Radio has got one purpose - to help communities in York get the voice they deserve.
Founded in 2017, we never imagined we would get this close to realising this dream... well here we are! 2 years later we have:
- been awarded a community radio licence by Ofcom to broadcast on FM to York.
- secured some incredible studio space within Burnholme Community Hub.
- sourced a group of presenters and producers to make some great shows on-air.
We have even made a start on building our studios, but here's the problem. Radio stations survive through advertising... but advertising isn't possible until we are on air (a bit of a catch 22).
We have been fortunate to secure funding through sources such as Big Lottery Fund which has got us most of the way down the road but will not get us all the way, and we're really keen to start making content that we can share with people in York as soon as possible.
Why are we doing this?
We aren't doing this for personal gain - quite the opposite! We want to be a catalyst to help support York's music scene, we want to shout out about the great things happening in the city, we want to be different and work alongside the existing stations to provide a service for people who otherwise don't have the choice.
We love York (so much we included it in our tagline) and we know other people do too. It's an incredible, beautiful, historic city with so much happening and we are so excited to be a part of it. We just need your support to help us realise our dream, and to allow us to help others.
The money raised by Kickstarter will be split between costs to build our studios, refine our website, and sourcing content for us to put to air. The aim with these is that it will give you something truly unique to tune in to.

Risks and challenges
Without the support of donations, we will not have enough money to get to air. The station has 6 directors who have all put £1,000 into the station to help get us this far as we believe we can make a difference, and we truly believe that once we are on-air we have a sustainable model that will carry us forward to success.
We are identifying other funding sources and liaising with local businesses for support but we need Kickstarter backers to help us get to air in the timescales we are aiming for, so we are doing everything to make this campaign a success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
