Hi! Grimalkin Press here!
We are beyond excited to tell you about our plans to publish "Plans We Made" by the talented UK artist Simon Moreton and how you can be a part of it. Simon is a zine maker and artist based in Bristol in the UK. Described by UK comics critic Andy Oliver as “one of the most important and intelligent creative voices in current U.K. small press comics”, this is his debut full-length book and we’re stoked to be bringing his work to a whole new audience.
The book is called Plans We Made and is a sparse and thoughtful reflection on the cartography of youth. It connects the points between the quiet streets you ran through as a child, the unwieldy chaos of house parties, and those moments when the outside world begins to seep into our teenage bubbles. It’s a memoir, mapped out against the backdrop of the suburban houses, gardens, hills, rivers and streets of South East England.
It's going to be a BEAUTIFUL book! Drawn in dark, soft pencil, it’s 160 pages of achingly gorgeous black and white line work. It features two colour covers, inside cover art.. a compact 6"x 8” in size and perfect bound… We're pulling out all the stops!
How can you help?
Normally the fund-raising period for books we publish is long and drawn out and involves eating lots of top ramen and penny pinching. However Simon’s book has garnered a bit of attention and we have the opportunity to get it nationally distributed through acclaimed publisher Uncivilized Books.
The thing is we need to get it printed in time to meet their schedules for the fall catalog, which requires that we go to print well ahead of what our current budget will allow.
That’s where you come in! The book is done. It’s ready to go to the printers. All we need is the funds to do that. I’ve written out an exact breakdown of the dispersment of funds below so you can see EXACTLY where your money will be going.
By becoming a backer now you will be getting the book MONTHS ahead of the public release and we’ve put together some fun reward bundles if you would like a bit more than just the book.
Even more importantly though you’ll be helping this book get made AND launching it into national distribution which is huge for an indie book like this. Instead of just selling it to comics fans at conventions it’ll be in stores like Barnes and Noble, putting Simon’s unique brand of thoughtful cartooning in front of a whole new audience.
We really can't do this without you! We really appreciate your support in this! Thank you!
HOW WE WILL BE USING THE FUNDS RAISED
Printing Costs: $4,000
Shipping Postage for minimum orders to meet goal: $1250
Misc. Packaging Etc/Unforeseen Expenses (the oh shit money) $450
Artist Advance: $300
Total Funds to be Raised: $6,500
Any money raised over our goal will go to printing a larger print run thus driving down the per unit price and the eventual retail price of the book. Also towards a larger artist advance if possible.
Risks and challenges
There's no risk! Simon has already finished drawing the book, the pages are scanned and we are laying it out currently. We're old hands at this book printing business so the fulfillment will go smoothly. Any delays from the printers will be communicated quickly to backers with an adjusted ship date corresponding. When this project gets funded YOU WILL get this book and any rewards you fliffed for.
