About this project

LearnTech Labs

LearnTech Labs is a new coding school that will combine the best of traditional and nontraditional computer science education. Our program is designed to prepare students to code using the technologies that are currently in highest demand with employers.

We teach in-person, career-focused courses covering web and app development, alongside the foundations of computer science. Every part of the program is designed with employment in mind, and we support students through the job hunt and into their careers.

The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund a student scholarship program that is designed to encourage diversity in the software industry. If we reach our stretch goal of $200k, we will open a campus in East Palo Alto, in partnership with StreetCode Academy.

For about a year now Live in Peace's StreetCode Academy has been giving the young people of East Palo Alto a chance to showcase their talent and creativity through code. These students are already on the path to become the skilled coders Silicon Valley so desperately needs. A coding bootcamp will provide the bridge between after-school coding and a coding career.

Rise of the Coding Schools

The massive demand for skilled coders is pulling people from all over the globe to Silicon Valley and other tech centers. This results in a rapid increase in the cost of living throughout the area. Similarly, as demand soars, other math heavy STEM fields are being drained of their brightest workers.

Education is the key to increasing the supply of coders and stabilizing local economies. Unfortunately too many colleges are failing to teach modern software development. And even when they do, by the time four or eight years go by the industry has already moved on.

This disconnect is being addressed by cutting-edge coding schools that started in San Francisco and over the past several years have sprouted up across the US. Unlike the average college Computer Science (CS) program, these code schools focus heavily on job placement with incredible success rates. However, they lack the strong theoretical CS foundation available at college and LearnTech Labs.

Scholarships

Colleges also have vast amounts of financial aid available to level the playing field for many demographics. So far, most of these new coding schools have yet to be accredited, since they don't fit the traditional academic model. And that means common sources of financial aid are inaccessible to their students.

Let's level the playing field by providing scholarships for talented students of various underrepresented demographics. You can shape the future of the tech industry, one coder at a time, by sponsoring a student through our career-focused coding school. Or by sharing this link with someone who might.

Rewards

Together we can make modern programming education accessible to a wide variety of people. We will train the students, and guide them into a career. We are asking you, the Kickstarter community, to fund scholarships for a variety of talented students. Help us shape the next generation of technology makers, who in turn will make the technology that shapes our future.

By sponsoring LearnTech at the $10,000 reward level, a student of your chosen underrepresented demographic will receive a full-ride scholarship for our Redwood City Web Development course. They will start in August of 2015, and will build you a website by the end of the year.

Similarly, by sponsoring us at the $5k level, a student will be awarded a full-ride scholarship to our program in either India or The Philippines. Those students will start in either September or January, and will have your website built by June 2016 at the latest.

Help us democratize access to this cutting-edge hybrid of college and coding school. We need to evolve rapidly to keep pace with our accelerating technology. And to do that elegantly, we need all the world’s wisdom represented in the tech industry, not just a select demographic.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest hurdle in the Bay Area will be helping students find affordable housing. That's a big part of why we decided to launch 25 miles south of San Francisco, in Redwood City.

Across our entire program, we know that we will have to work hard to convince families to send the best and brightest students to an alternative model. We will have to fight the myth that a college education is the only path to a successful career.

Since websites for scholarship funders are created by the students who are funded, the site will be one of their first few portfolio projects. To ensure the websites are elegantly designed and programmed, we work with students to refine the projects. Every project a student does at LearnTech Labs is refined until an instructor has confirmed it is professional level work.
