Just like Community Supported Agriculture, this campaign is Community Supported Authorship! Instead of receiving food, you receive a book (or for higher reward tiers, receive multiple book titles from New Society Publishers catalog).
In the USA, 4 companies receive 60% of all grocery sales. In Canada, 5 companies receive 80% of grocery sales. This dominance among the grocery giants has far-reaching environmental, economic, social and cultural impacts, but there is a movement afoot that is effectively transforming our neighborhood grocery stores. Instead of relying on the handful of chain retailers to decide what food is available, communities are looking to the cooperative model, enabling people to become co-owners in their neighborhood grocery stores. Today, there are over 300 retail food co-ops and counting. People are successfully democratizing the food supply, one grocery store at a time!
This campaign will support the telling of this story through the development and writing of the book Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants. There is a whole lot of excitement about this book among the food co-op community with about 100 food co-ops across the U.S. and Canada helping spread the news of this campaign.
By joining this movement, you are effectively pre-ordering a copy of the book and becoming a part of a global shift in how people engage with our local grocery stores! Campaign funds will also go directly towards the research and writing of the book, any travel necessary in the research phase, photography, illustrations, and the book's web site. Our campaign goal at this stage is $27,100 USD ($33,725 CAD). If our campaign exceeds our goals, funds will be directed towards a book launch tour across the USA and Canada! We anticipate a Spring 2019 book publication through New Society Publishers.
Grocery Story is a coming together of my experiences to date in the good food movement. It will draw upon my work as a journalist reporting extensively on food systems through the producing and hosting of Deconstructing Dinner and upon my 10 years on the board of directors of my community-owned grocery store - the Kootenay Co-op.
