And then there are the treats you’ll only recall when you see the packaging for the first time in decades.

WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE STORY
There is a house in Stockport, Manchester. It belonged to a Mr John Townsend. He collected things, lots of things, all his life. So passionate was his desire to collect that he just couldn't stop. When he died in 2015 he left his house, the attic, the garage, the summerhouse and the caravan outside overflowing with boxes - a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.
By a strange quirk of fate, Jonny Trunk visited the house in 2016 and with the help of Mr Townsend’s sons, he started the marathon task of looking through the boxes. What he found was extraordinary and unlike anything he’d seen before: piles of carefully accumulated ephemera – wrappers, packets, cards, cans – all sorts of trash and treasure from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
Wrappers Delight was conceived as the perfect way to document this most amazing, important collection, and to celebrate the life of Mr John Townsend.
WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE BOOK
As you can already imagine, this will be a book full of odd memories and powerful Proustian moments. Running to 240 pages it will feature hundreds of rare, fascinating, peculiar and brilliant wrappers, packets and unexpected objects that have been photographed, scanned and reproduced in high quality. Sweet cigarette boxes, wax gum papers, empty bags of crisps, tokens, drink cans, rock labels, stamps, transfers, coupons, recipe cards, tickets, odd boxes, badges, cards, stickers … and more. Yes, this is nostalgia, but on a new and quite extreme level.
The book will be digging through decades of discarded design, this rare packaging really is a graphic goldmine! In short Wrappers Delight offers you a wonderfully curated rummage through years of forgotten fonts, illustrations, ideas, printing techniques and marketing concepts.
All this PLUS a foreword written by Jarvis Cocker.
WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE PLEDGING OPTIONS
There are a number of pledging options for Wrappers Delight. As well as the book there's a limited edition two colour 'Surprise' 3p sweet bag tote, an enviable orange flavour 'Space Dust' tee shirt and a very groovy A & BC 'Planet Of The Apes' gum wrapper screen-print.
For Trunk music collectors there is also a very, very limited bubblegum pink 7” record of unreleased advertising music by none other than Kenny Graham. Kenny was a maverick sax player, band leader and composer who wrote the superb soundtrack to The Small World Of Sammy Lee as well as being the first person to cover the music of Moondog (way back in 1957). This one-off 7" EP features all his unreleased advertising music, made in the 1960s for companies such as Cadbury's, Fry's and the Milk Marketing Board. Expect hip jingles and some jazzy sweet suites. The backing track for our Kickstarter video is just one of the tunes. It's the perfect accompaniment for the book and, like all these limited items, will only be available via this Wrappers Delight crowdfunding offer.
And for the top tier of pledges we have ACTUAL rare original wrappers and items from the John Townsend collection - this will include the completely fabulous 1970s Birds Eye Fish Finger notepad for the first 20 buyers. What an item!
A new reward features Muhammad Ali advertising Birds Eye Quarter Pounders - a rare original promo card from 1981. Measures approx 23cm (width) by 30cm (height). Only 20 available!
WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE AUTHOR
Over the last three decades Jonny Trunk has been digging through his past. His record company, Trunk Records, has been a leading light in esoteric, strange and lost music. Jonny has also created several archive related books examining material from Sainsbury’s Own Label archives, library music, Mary Whitehouse and even the Smallfilms work of Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin.
His books and musical releases have proved extraordinarily influential, very collectable and are always beautifully produced. For Wrappers Delight he has teamed up with publishers FUEL, who he has worked with before on several occasions. Jonny believes that no other publisher can put together the fascinating, disparate and unexpected objects for this book in a better, more engaging way.
In short, FUEL are the perfect publishers for Wrappers Delight.
WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE PUBLISHER
FUEL are Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrell, a graphic design and publishing company founded in 1991, based in Spitalfields, east London. Working closely with artists and authors, they design and publish beautiful and distinctive art books. Previous titles include the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia series, Soviet Bus Stops and with Jonny Trunk: The Music Library, Dressing For Pleasure and Own Label, Sainsbury's Design Studio 1962-1977.
WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE SPECIFICATION
220mm x 180mm
Finally, to give you a very solid idea of what the book will be like, it will be based on the format and specification that we used for the hugely successful and critically acclaimed Own Label, shown above.
WRAPPERS DELIGHT – THE BUDGET
All the money pledged will go directly towards the project.
The wrappers and packaging will be reproduced to the highest possible standards using professional scanning and photographic equipment. The cataloguing, research, writing, design and printing will take a further three months of work: all vital requirements in the production of such a quality publication.
Wrappers Delight is very much a labour of love for us and will be adored by many. By pledging now you will be helping to produce this exceptional graphic art book.
