Squire for Hire - Micro Tile-Based Card Game

Your day has finally come – a famous adventurer has hired YOU to be their Squire!

When your hero completes quests, defeats baddies, and takes all the credit, they also earn loot – which you get the great honour of carrying! This means you are in charge of choosing items you think will be most useful to your hero, and also which ones to give up to complete a story card.

Head to the Updates to see the full Luna Necromancer card!

Squire for Hire is an 18 card, tile-laying inventory management game for 1-2 players that takes about 15-20 min to play.

Each Squire takes turns completing quests, dungeons and encounters and adding loot to their bag. Keep vital items in your bag for when you need them, pack efficiently for extra points, and eliminate junk to be the Squire with the highest scoring bag!

Each player gets a Squire card. As a Squire, you get extra points for collecting loot that is useful for your hero, and bonuses towards completing certain quests.

Two cards are flipped to either side of the Story deck, so the Loot side is face-up. If you complete a Story, you get to pick one loot card to try to add to your bag.

Story cards can be completed one of two ways:

 1.  The item type on the left of the Story card shows the Item Value you need in your bag.

A red weapon icon with the number 2 requires a combination of daggers, swords or bows that total 2 spaces in your bag.

 2.  You can also use an item

To use an item, pick a Loot card to take as your reward first. Then, use an item on the new Loot card to fully cover the item you wish to use.

A blue armour icon with '-1' means you must cover one complete helmet, shield, or chest-plate with an item on the new loot card.

There are a couple simple rules for placing Loot cards in your bag:

  • You must place one full item from the loot card into the same number of empty or occupied spaces in your bag. If you try to cover spaces occupied by items, the entire item must be covered
  •  Junk items also count as empty spaces, but deduct 1 point each from your score if left uncovered.
  • If your bag doesn't have enough spaces to place an item from the loot card, (or you don't want to place a new card) you must return the loot card

Once you have completed a story and placed a loot card, end your turn by flipping the story card over next to the deck. (If two loot cards are already there, you get to choose which one to cover.)

Once all possible loot cards are claimed, it's time to add up each Squire's points to determine the winner!

*Hint: Each tier comes with a Score Sheet digital download to keep track of your high scores for each character!

  • Each weapon, armour, magic or valuable item is worth 1 point each. Extra points are added for your Squire's card item combinations and bonuses.
  •  Identical items (ie. two daggers, two shields, etc) placed together are worth 1 extra point.
  • Deduct 1 point for each Junk item still visible in your bag.

Growing up, I was an all-around RPG gaming geek, artist, musician and general collector of nerdy things. I've always been a big fan of old school PC games like Morrowind, Diablo, Dungeon Siege, and Quest for Glory 5. I also collected card games of every kind, and would organise them into binders based on type, colour or just by the artwork that I liked.

That love of collecting and managing stuff never died, and served as the inspiration for making a game about the unsung heroes of fantasy - the Squires! (Honorable mention to all the horses and level up perks that gave our RPG characters extra inventory capacity).

Squire for Hire scratches that inventory management itch, letting you collect and strategically place items in a fast and re-playable tile laying game you can take anywhere. I've packed as much as possible into 18 cards, and I believe have made a game that plays well not only as a single player time-killer, but also a two player game night addition.

However,  the game is not yet finished. The tabletop community has been incredibly supportive so far, and I'm sure the game will continue to improve with community feedback as the campaign goes on.

Squire for Hire can also be played solo, and makes a great way to kill some extra time on your lunch break, or while waiting for a flight, etc. In solo play, you must prove your worth by scoring at least 30 points to get hired! Keep track of your high scores to see how good you can get!

Looking to play with up to four people?

Simply grab another copy of the game at the discounted rate, shuffle the two decks together and you are all set! Doubling the card count also works great in two-player!

"Squire for Hire is a great game, it can fit in your pocket and can be played solo and with two players. It is ideal for travelling or when waiting for a friend or gaming buddy. It plays quick, has a small foot print and has a decent amount of choices available."

"I really like the game itself and how clever it is for just being 18 cards. The story cards flipping to become available loot cards works really well... We played twice in a row because it’s a fun puzzle that plays so quickly."

- Stefan, Foxbo Games

I wanted to keep everything as lean as possible, without compromising on a quality, professional product that will hold up for hopefully hundreds of plays. And because the game comes in such a small package, the weight was also low enough to include FREE shipping to Canada and the US! International orders will be $5 extra shipping.

You also get a discounted rate on additional copies. To add one to your order, simply add $12 CAD (about $9 USD) to your order. (Remember, you can play with up to four people by adding an extra copy! Each copy comes with the bonus KS card).

If you've backed the Squire for Hire pledge, you can add a second custom card by adding $52 CAD (about $40 USD).

For international backers, your $5 shipping will cover the first two games. For each game past the first two, please add $5 PER GAME.

 What about Stretch Goals?

Sorry, not for this one. To keep shipping costs as low as possible (or free) I am limited in the amount of physical rewards I can add. However, I have included a few little bonuses to make sure this is a great product right out of the gate:

  •  Squire for Hire Illustrated Wallpaper - A hi-res illustrated wallpaper for your computer or tablet featuring the squires.
  •  Score Sheets - Download and print these score sheets so you can track your high scores with each Squire.
  •  UV/Gloss Coating on all cards and packaging. It protects them from dirt, scratches, and moisture.
  •  Upgraded Hook box - UV coated with printed rules on the inside. The cards do not fit when sleeved, so I wanted to offer something a little more protective than a paper envelope and paper rules.
  •  Kickstarter Exclusive Squire card - This will be a limited print of this extra card available only for the Kickstarter. We can come up with a new idea and vote on which one we want to include that fits with the theme of the game. (Since the game comes pre-shrink wrapped, this card will ship in a protective sleeve with the game, but should fit in the box once opened.)

Where can I find more of your games?

As an artist, I always have a project on the go in some form or another. I do everything from children's book illustrations and book covers to commissioned paintings and concept art. But I've always been an avid gamer in one sense or another and love designing my own games, even as a kid. The last few years, I've released a couple of my own games through The Game Crafter. Check out my designer page below to find more of my games!

Risks and challenges

I'm a very organised individual who plans things too meticulously to avoid as many hiccups as possible, but surprises can happen. I'm 100% open and honest if anything comes up that could impact the timeline.

I've been using the same manufacturer for a few years now and and have come to rely on their service, quality and delivery timing. The artwork, packaging and graphic design are already finished for the base game. After the project is funded, I have allotted extra time to get the custom cards drawn. (I have imposed a limit to make sure it doesn't affect the timeline for ordering the cards).

The games will ship to me pre-packaged (minus the bonus cards) which will save a ton of prep time so I can ship them out quickly. As the size and scope of the project increases far beyond the original goal, I am continuing to source the most reliable and trustworthy distributor to fulfill these orders based on recommendations from fellow Canadian Kickstarter campaigns.
