The afterlife is under new management...
When corporate con-artist Jack Fortune’s life came to an abrupt end, he discovered an afterlife in chaos, leaving him with no option but to take over, modernise and turn a tidy profit. Now, under Jack’s visionary leadership, Afterlife Inc. goes from strength to strength, improving quality of death for all. But when one of the afterlife’s former rulers returns, public opinion shifts massively against Jack’s branded idealism and dangerous thinking. When faced with heaven’s legitimate owners, can Jack be trusted to relinquish his stolen power - and should he?
Man meets god in Volume 4 of Afterlife Inc. Also featuring! Divine beings, corporate intrigue... and the severed heads of Einstein, Newton and Tesla!?
Praise for Afterlife Inc.
'It is very rare that you find a graphic novel or indeed piece of literature that has something new to say, but I believe that Afterlife Inc. is it… Essentially, this is what comic books are all about.'
Anastasia Catris, CHAOS HOUR
'An absurdly slick and confident volume – a profoundly readable and open world full of stories and characters… Irresistible.'
Owen Watts, editor of THE PSYCHEDELIC JOURNAL OF TIME TRAVEL
'The comic is a slab of wonder, with pure imagination spread across every page. The stories, characters and settings at show here are comics in their purest form.'
'SPOILER ALERT: everyone’s dead.'
Nich Angell, 7STRING and CAT & MERINGUE
For the last four years I’ve been self-publishing Afterlife Inc. on the UK indie comics circuit. To date there have been three volumes of Jack’s adventures in the afterlife, not to mention a crossover with the world of 7STRING and a hardback collection edition. The entire story can be read for free online, starting here!
I’m turning to Kickstarter to fund the production and printing of Afterlife Inc. Volume 4: Man Made God. This 172-page, full-colour graphic novel takes Afterlife Inc. into a new era as the consequences of Jack’s vast, Promethean dream finally hit home. Afterlife Inc. Volume 4 is already 50% finished and self-funded. I just need your help to take us the remainder of the way and make this book a reality.
Also! By popular demand, we've added the option to customise your rewards with additional content. Simply pick the add-on you'd like from the list below and add the corresponding amount to your pledge. A survey will go out at the end of the campaign to determine which add-ons you pledged for and your art preferences (see below).
Afterlife Inc. Volume 4 is already 50% complete! The money raised through Kickstarter will fund the remainder of the book: paying artists, printing and posting rewards, and covering Kickstarter’s administration fees. Any money left over will go straight back into Afterlife Inc. - be it reprinting other books in the series or funding future stories.
I’ve already run two previous Kickstarter campaigns for Afterlife Inc., in addition to a card game for Big Punch Studios, so I feel I have enough experience to complete this project and deliver all rewards on schedule.
Afterlife Inc. Volume 4 consists of six chapters - and as mentioned above, half of them are already done. While we’re working on the second half of the book, backers will receive downloadable PDFs of each chapter as it’s completed, with a print copy of the finished book to follow. The moment the Kickstarter campaign ends you’ll receive a PDF of Chapter 1, just to whet your appetite while we get to work on the rest of the book.
So, to avoid any confusion, if you pledge for a print copy of the book you’ll receive:
• a downloadable PDF of each chapter as it's completed (six in total)
• a print copy of Afterlife Inc. Volume 4
• a downloadable PDF of Afterlife Inc. Volume 4 (the full book)
• downloadable PDFs of Volumes 1-3 (the story so far).
The chapter covers for Volume 4 feature art from Richard Elson (Marvel, 2000AD), Ben Haith (Stormhaven Techs), Nich Angell (7STRING, Big Punch Studios), Ash Pure (The Lion & The Unicorn), Tom Harley and Jack Tempest.
Hi. My name is Jon Lock, and I’m the writer and creator of Afterlife Inc. Once upon a time I worked as a school science technician; now I divide my time between my work as an editor, and writing Cuckoos, Orb and 99 Swords for Big Punch Studios. As part of Big Punch Studios, which I co-founded in 2015, I’m part of the team responsible for Afterlife Inc., 7STRING and our quarterly magazine BPM. We also make games such as Sandwich Masters. (If you’re interested, more information can be found on the Big Punch website.) Occasionally I sleep and/or tweet.
I’ve also recently had my appendix out. Which is nice.
As ever, Afterlife Inc. would be nothing without the amazing art team bringing the world to life. For Volume 4, pencilling duties are shared between series regular Ash Jackson (Beautiful Creatures - Red 5 Comics) and new collaborator Davide Tinto (Revengers League, Artsteady), both of whom are bringing fresh takes to familiar characters. Mike Bunt (VS Comics) is on call to provide inks and a steady hand, while the remarkable Verity Glass (Assassin’s Creed - Titan Comics) is dazzling on colours.
Rounding off the team is my partner in life and comics Lucy Brown (99 Swords - Big Punch Studios), providing letters, editorial advice and a sharp kick to the shins whenever the dialogue gets too wordy.
Risks and challenges
Afterlife Inc. Volume 4: Man Made God is already 50% complete, and the moment the Kickstarter campaign ends backers will receive a downloadable PDF of Chapter 1. While we’re working on the remainder of the book, backers will continue to receive PDFs of each chapter as it’s completed to keep you in the loop during the creative process.
I’ve been able to self-fund the work so far because I believe massively in the world of Afterlife Inc. By turning to Kickstarter I hope that you can help me fund the remainder of the book in a much more realistic timeframe than I would otherwise be able to achieve. I hope that investing in the book demonstrates my commitment to the project and my desire to tell the best story possible.
The team working on the book is tried and tested: we’ve already produced five graphic novels, and successfully delivered on three Kickstarters, so I’d like to think we have some experience in completing a project and fulfilling rewards on schedule. The printer I’m working with is a long-term collaborator, with an excellent track record. Every issue of BPM, the quarterly magazine I produce for Big Punch Studios, has been printed on time and at remarkable quality, so I know Volume 4 is in safe hands.
As with any project of this nature unexpected delays can always occur, but I hope that by having such a reliable team on board I’m well equipped to mitigate any surprises should they arise. I’ll also be sure to keep you updated at every stage of production, both through Kickstarter and social media.
Thanks for reading this far, gang. I’m so excited to bring you this next instalment in the story of Afterlife Inc. and I hope you’ll join us on the journey.
All the best!
