Before I get into talking about the project here's a bit of my music from previous albums for you to check out!
ABOUT THIS PROJECT:
Basically I have 10 songs that I am really proud of and I need your help to bring them to life. By getting a little help with some of the production costs it can help me focus a bit more on marketing to really get the music out there for more people to enjoy. Also I think I have some unique and interesting rewards so it can be more than just crowdsourcing. Either way I am so grateful that you are even here looking.
First let me break down how an album is normally made:
1. write the songs (music and lyrics)
2. record demos (a rough recording of the songs)
3. make a plan to record (book studio/hire producer...etc)
4. teach your band (or studio musicians) your songs
5. record the music (if only it was that easy)
6. extra production (solo instruments, overdubbing, effects...)
7. mixing and mastering (making it sound awesome!)
8. distribution (itunes, spotify, physical CDs...)
9. marketing (Social media, videos, live shows...)
10. buy yacht
This is a basic outline describing how most artists make a record. As you can see a lot goes into make the music you hear everyday. It also costs a lot of money! The average day rate for a studio is around $800. Average day rate for a studio musician is around $500...etc Back in the day they used to spend months in the studio. Now we try and pack as much as we can into as little studio time as we can (for cost sake)
So here's my plan:
I've already got the 10 songs written and I think they're solid. The style is indie rock/alternative. Below you can listen to my demo recording of "Life Right Here" which will be on the album. (The other songs are a bit heavier, this is one of the lighter tracks) While listening remember that it will sound 10 times better once we're finished.
LIFE RIGHT HERE (DEMO)
I'm going to spend two days at STAGG STREET STUDIOS to do drums and guitars. This studio has state of the art equipment and a beautiful sounding live room which will help create a professional sound. Check out some photos below:
Once we leave the studio on day two we will have the drums and most of the guitars recorded. If we have time we will add the beautiful grand piano they have to a few of the tracks.
Once our "real" studio time is done I'll be doing the rest of the recording and producing at my own studio. Here I will add more live instruments (bass, lead gtr, strings...etc) as well as vocals. Once I'm finished with that I will send it off to my awesome (and grammy award winning) producer/engineer Tone Def (Green Day, Santana) for mixing and mastering. Tone will also be with me in the studio to help with recording. I've been working with Tone for years now and love the work he does and the music we make together.
I'm asking for $5,000
Most of that money will go to the recording process, basically into three main chunks:
The rest will be used for the actual printing of the physical CDs and for marketing.
Thank you for reading this and for your interest in my project. I will be posting updates along the way so you can see my progress as I get closer to finishing the album! Stay tuned and thank you again!
Risks and challenges
I think the biggest risks and challenges are being able to be very productive in the short time we have in the big studio. We are going to be doing a lot of recording in a short amount of time. I believe I will be able to overcome this because I know the songs very well and practice everyday. I think when the time comes to enter the studio I will be very prepared and able to knock out the recording quickly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
