JaJa Design Improvements!

Hi All,
In the last few weeks I have personally been working on our AppTag Laser Blaster Kickstarter project – it just has 3 days to run and is 120% funded, there is still time to get yourself one!

My work on AppTag has not slowed JaJa though, since our two design engineers have been working hard to get the JaJa perfect – I hope you like where we have gone with this, the same perfection is being applied to AppTag!

Anyway, here’s what we have been doing! Feel free to skip to the updated pics below, and come back… I’ll wait… :-)
The internals of the JaJa are tiny<!>, and it has taken a lot of work to get the design and materials just right. After a lot of discussion with our distributors, some backers and the factory we have also made some design changes. Below are the changes we have made and the reasons for them.

Battery life – Our expected battery life is 80-90 hours of use, probably double your mouse battery life! Whack - Take that Bluetooth! :-) A Pressure Sensitive Bluetooth Stylus would struggle with 15 hours, we deliver 6 times that!

The tip - this has probably been the most difficult thing to get right, in general, other stylus tips are ugly black blobs or have internal components that block the view of the screen or cause skipping when moved across the screen. Our tip is different – the picture only tells part of the story, but it is an elegant, refined solution.

The speaker grill – Now an simple slot with some metallic mesh to block debris (similar to iPad 1 speaker) - our original design called for 288 x 0.4mm holes – it looked great, but would halve the battery life, since we needed double the sound output. Remember our high frequency sound is how your Tablet knows how hard you press etc. Small holes and sound don’t mix too well.

Battery – We have decided to go with a user replaceable AAA battery, I know some of you might be disappointed with this decision, but many more will applaud it, let me explain: I had many negative comments about my original choice of internal fixed rechargeable battery – many of you wanted battery you could change. The JaJa is designed for an iPad - you want to be mobile! When the battery dies you don’t want to find an outlet – or worse still find a USB port – iPads don’t even have a USB port! A AAA battery allows you to switch battery and just keep drawing! Obviously you can use a AAA rechargeable, but you wont be stuck with a dead stylus.

Styling – what can I say, I hope you like our refinements, I think it looks like a pretty classy technical writing instrument now. It was nice before – but the JaJa is going to be amazing now!

Delivery Date – sorry to say it has slipped a little; we had a couple of delays with materials samples. I’ll confirm more next week when we have the final schedule. It’s looking like 3rd week of May.

Finally – color choice questionnaire, and delivery address – we’ll be doing the color choice questionnaire next week, and the delivery address just prior to delivery – so fear not – we will be getting to that!

Feel free to message me with any queries or problems! Next update will be from the factory!

I'm curious about both delivery and color voting. Would like to know on delivery date at the least.

It has been over a month since the last update. Could you please let us know the status of the project and more importantly when we could expect delivery.

hate to "me too, but i'm curious when review units will be shipping.

It has been almost a month since this update. Do you have a final date yet on the delivery schedule for the finished product?

How about a tip like the Zeppelin Stylus?…
Looks like it sticks less compared to the Jot Stylus..which your tip is pretty similar to?
Also, hope you're releasing your SDK for android OS as well?

Good decision about the AAA battery - the ability to replace and not recharge is valuable on the go. The "stalk" feeding down to the actual stylus, while not as pretty as some may like, seems like it will enhance visibility to the contact point and hence accuracy of placement. Good work! Really looking forward to this. Any way for us to know who's coming on board and adding support in their apps?

@Jason Campbell We shouldn't really have to be beggars, but I guess that ball is really in Apple's court. They're the ones with the power to build stylus support into iOS, and hardware into the iPad itself to recognise sharp tips.

I don't mind most of the design, but the nose/nib area looks out of place. I liked the more rounded nose of the original design. But then, design is always a compromise.

I cannot really understand how you feel drawing with the plastic disk....that's why i would like to see the pen in action, doing a real sketch in procreate...

    11. Jason Campbell on March 13, 2012

I was hoping for the death of the ball and socket and the dreaded plastic disc.
      Beggars/choosers I suppose.

    12. Alex Lovett on March 13, 2012

It is a great deal of ugly now compared to before, albeit no doubt more practical though which what really matters, but it would be nice if we could have our cake and eat it :-)

Personally i liked more the early design of the pen...more stylish...
About the AAA battery, I'm a bit worried about the weight too..
But, above all, it's defintely how you fill drawing with the pen, totally agree with that...all the rest is secondary imo.
Hope to see mine soon! One month of delay? Really can't wait too see your wonder...
It would be nice if you could share some demo with commercial app!!!

    14. Fateh Khalsa on March 13, 2012

Hmm... Mostly sound like great changes - but it now looks very.. Stubby. Maybe a more refined taper towards the tip, even though it obviously has to be fatter for the AAA? That's just my personal thought on the aesthetics. Otherwise, it almost looks like at some angles it would get in the way of seeing the tip..
How does it FEEL to draw with? If it feels great in your hand and is easy to draw with, then the visual appearance should still definitely come second to that.

Cool stuff otherwise! Can't wait to get mine!

Reading "high frequency sound" and "double sound output" made me wonder -- how "loud" is it? Will it affect dogs?

    16. Donn Pattenden on March 13, 2012

Hmmm, starting to worry about the weight of a AAA battery at the top of the stylus...

I love the design. And the choice for the color is great too. This orange and grey is beautiful. Good job ;-)

    19. Moe on March 13, 2012

There's blue now! I am pleased with this.

aww man where did the red and black one go???

    21. Eric on March 13, 2012

I'm liking this more and more. I favor the aaa battery choice as well. The tip has got my attention. I'm wondering how it works and how it may differ from a stylus tip I currently own called jot, which has had some hiccups - mainly because of a Zagg screen guard. But, for the jaja I can finally say bye to Zagg if need be— I just hope I don't need to. Anyway, that aside, I like this stylus and can't wait to have it in hand.
