About this project
Smartphone Laser Tag - AppTag delivers 1st Person Shooter Gaming for Backyard & Office!
Thank You Backers!! AppTag is now in production! Delivery soon!AppTag Laser Blaster brings first person shooter console gameplay to smartphones in the real world. Obviously, as with any blaster toy, the object is to shoot your friends! The AppTag does the shooting and the smartphone keeps score and tracks everything else, the App even adds Augmented Reality objects such as medkits, armour, weapons and ammo packs! For targeting we use a focused infrared beam and sensor for the 'laser' so it's totally safe. Each unit has an IR sender and receiver, and the AppTag unit works together with an attached smartphone or iPod Touch.
The AppTag unit communicates with iPods, iPhones or Android devices using high frequency sound - so it just works with no Bluetooth or WiFi setup required. The high frequency sounds are well out of human hearing and don't disturb animals since the volume is quite low. Importantly - the headphone jack remains free, so we can use the microphone and the speaker for sound effects and in game communication.
AppTag has 6 buttons available:
1. A pressure sensitive trigger switch that can mount on any blaster trigger or the included pistol grip.
2. A large reload button.
3. 4 buttons that allow app developers to expand on gameplay, such as walky talky, change weapons, sniper zoom, pickup weapons, medkits, change menu etc.
“iPhones aren’t cool. You know what’s cool? Shooting your friends with your iPhone, mounted into a laser blaster.” ** Mashable
**note AppTag works with Android and other phones too.
The free App will be available when the blaster ships, and we're expecting devlopers will jump at the chance to build games for this awesome toy! You can clamp any iPhone, Android or iPod Touch into the AppTag device and you’re ready to go. AppTag clamp works with almost any case, so no need to remove it!

Backwards Compatible With Any Blaster ToyYou can either use the included pistol grip or clamp the AppTag on to most Nerf™, Buzzbee™ - in fact any toy gun with an accessory rail. We include a sturdy rubberised trigger with wire and several small adhesive clips. The AppTag trigger switch grips the trigger of existing toys or our own trigger in the supplied pistol grip,. The trigger can attach to any existing gun.
As mentioned on Urban Taggers - These guys *know* about such things!
The free AppTag App keeps score via WiFi and players can pick up extra guns, ammo packs, health kits and body armour in a similar way to a console games like Halo, but this is in real life, inside or outdoors! You can play single, multi or team games and the AppTag can be used with other guns that have an accessory rail, such as Nerf™, BuzzBee™ etc.

Why Are We On Kickstarter?
To raise funds for tooling of the plastic parts, we already have the electronic designs and PCB tooling funded. We also need to finish off our Apps which are pretty cool now, but need some polish!
Developers Read This:
Yes we have an SDK! I'm hoping it will be will be ready in 2-3 weeks, so you can even start dev before you get the gun!
The gun doesn't connect as such - no plugs wires or synching. We use high frequency sound above human hearing, the SDK will enable you to plug all that in pretty easily.
Also the laser tag IR codes are sent from the phone to the gun by audible DTMF tones - we have 256 IR codes in two groups (odd and even parity check) for large groups of players (you'll need a big backyard!)
For huge games (multi1000's ) we also intend to have a cloud based system for player code registration and we can track "time of shot" and "time of target hit" to determine the actual players doing the shooting and being shot. Add in GPS and we can enable wide area gaming over 3G with thousands of players. :-)
Queries? Suggestions? Message me!
AppTag is not affiliated with Nerf, Hasbro or any other toymaker, obviously Trademarks are owned by their super huge companies! :-)
