Brew Watch Co. is an independent watch company based out of New York City. Founded in 2015 with the our first chronograph series using Swiss movements.
Brew is about celebrating a time in which we can free ourselves from the rush of the everyday life, and enjoy some personal time over coffee. The break is less about the consumption of coffee and more about savoring that very moment in time. It was within this environment that Brew watches was born.
The Brew HP-1 Automatic Series is the culmination of my knowledge and experience for modern day watch making, joined with the quality seen in vintage mechanical watches. They are well designed, manufactured, and delivered - all with great thought and care. This signature collection is a nod to the past with its vintage style, 38mm case. Comfortably worn by both men and women.
You gave us great feedback and we listened! With all of your valuable and insightful responses, I was able to objectively take these ideas and translate them into a new design - while still keeping true to a design that fits within the Brew collection.
There was a demand for a smaller watch that could be worn by both men and women on an everyday basis. So I scaled down the cushion case from our original 44mm Special Blend Series to our now current 38mm HP-1 series. Allowing significant wear and comfort for more people.
One of the most popular things asked for was an automatic movement. This is something that had to be taken into strong consideration to keep the price point attainable without sacrificing quality. I researched all of the available options on the market that would be the best choice for quality, function, and price. A long lasting and precise movement that would last generations. I selected the Seiko NH35A movement. A robust and dependable engine that has a long track record of being a work-horse movement.
Taking all of these desirable details and implementing them into this watch was something that needed to be accomplished properly to ensure the quality. I was successful in bringing these details and components together at an honest price. While most watches with a similar construction can cost substantially more. I chose to keep the price significantly lower than the competitors, allowing you the opportunity to acquire such a high quality and unique timepiece.
I've taken two very strong passions of mine - My love for watch design and my obsession with coffee and used them to create this new exciting and beautiful collection.
The inspiration for this dial design derives from espresso machine gauges, which measure the pressure of the boiling hot water inside. I translated these mechanical, industrial gauges into this classic and minimalistic design.
From the 10 to 12 hour markers, you will see light etched minute markers, symbolizing the high pressure region - hence the name HP-1. The second hand is similar to those seen on vintage industrial gauges, with its delicate and precise body. The thin hand is then joined with a counterweight of a small O-design, which allows for more accurate, uninterrupted movement as the watch revolves in its full 360 degrees. Having the most efficient balance with the design and manufacturing of these hands is essential, because with any uneven weight, it would be possible for the momentum and accuracy to be thrown off during normal use. That is why the hands have been designed, manufactured, and tested for the best quality in keeping accurate time.
The case back has vented cutouts, similar to those seen on the machines for the heat exhaust. Combining all of these aspects to exaggerate the industrial nature of this design. The process involved taking vintage elements seen on products from the past and giving them new life in this modern timepiece.
Each individual piece is specially engineered, custom tooled, and manufactured for this specific design. No parts are off the shelf or replicated from existing watches, as you may see in other watches on the market. Carefully considering each detail, and ensuring the uniqueness of this timepiece.
The high dome sapphire crystal gives an incredible visual effect when you look at the dial from different perspectives. The crystal also exaggerates the brushed sunray finish on the dial and amplifies the hour markers. More importantly, it continuously keeps the design unique and lively. The dome curves up to a flat top, giving the best clarity and pays tribute to the more vintage style.
The case back design was inspired by the sight glass opening on coffee roasting machines. They allow the operator visible access to their roast. This watch provides the same function by allowing the wearer visual access to the inner mechanics of their automatic timepiece. Rather than a large window opening for the entire case back, this design commands attention directly to the balance wheel, which is constantly in motion.
From the vast amount of movements available in the world, I chose to use the robust and dependable Seiko NH35A automatic movement. This movement is one that has a long track record of being a work-horse movement. It is long lasting and has very little maintenence required. The cost to manufacture and use these automatic movements is also more attainable than its competitors with little difference in terms of function. Seiko stands for precision and quality, and that is just what this movement provides.
Seiko NH35A Automatic Movement:
Power Reserve: +41 Hours As you wear your watch, you keep it running.
Bi-directional Winding: Translates natural wrist movement better.
24 Jewels: Reduces friction wear and increases lifespan of the movement.
Hacking Seconds: Safely stops the second hand when the crown is pulled out.
Shock Resistant: Shock-absorber device build within, reduces any chance of internal mechanical damage.
To wind this robust mechanical movement, it was necessary to have a well designed crown. Both the size and the texture were key here to develop just the right tactile form in which the crown could be easily gripped and also a great pleasure to wind. The inspiration for the crown came from paper coffee filters. They have a fantastic form, when translated into a rigid structure, give the perfect texture for rotational movement as you wind and set your watch.
