Welcome! If you like what you're hearing in this video and at www.jonathanbrinkley.com, just wait! When this project funds, I'll have the resources I've always dreamed of having to make the wholly original and inspired work I feel that I'm meant to make. And, I'll have the help of producer Sean Flora, who's worked with The Shins, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Black Keys, Jeremy Wilson, and Cake, just to name a few. (many more details below) We're on our way, and it's because of you! Thank you.
As for the rest, I am going to try to make this little description of my intentions as lively as possible, so happy reading!
My name is Jonathan Brinkley, I am a musician who seeks to open the hearts of people everywhere, and I've come quite far with the help of a small community. When we come together, magic tends to happen. Now, it's time to see if we can cause something very special, very beautiful, and undeniably real to grow. Because of my last Kickstarter campaign in 2011, I have reached hundreds of new fans all over the world. So, the community is expanding. Just watch what we can do now!
The Ultimate Goal is $20,000!
So, $15,000 is a worthy goal, and it's also the smallest sum we can possibly do this project with. Our ultimate goal--what we're calling our Stretch Goal--is a total of $20,000! The more money we have, the better this product will eventually be. Anything we make over $20,000 will go toward tours and promotions.
Sean and I are already hard at work in pre-production meetings! We're in touch with some of the finest musicians in Portland, and we're excited to employ them all. We are poised to take these songs to as yet unseen heights, and that's very exciting. We're going to make a record that's as daringly original as it is heartfelt and authentic.
In order to achieve the next level of artistry, we're gonna do something revolutionary in the world of independent music: We're going to pay people what they're worth. So we're raising up to $20,000, which is a bargain-basement deal for what we're getting:
- State-of-the-art recording equipment
- Ample studio time for free-flowing creativity
- Sean, the Producer. Did I mention he's worked with these guys: Jeremy Wilson, The Shins, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Black Keys, Cake, and many others?
- LOTS of musicians, from woodwinds to drums to keyboards, etc.
- Hours and hours of Mixing
- High-end Professional Mastering
- Gorgeous Cover Art
- CD Replication
- Promotional materials
- More Music Videos by Zipporah Lomax and others
- ...AND all those great rewards over on the right of your screen!
You are the key to this endeavor's success, and I am full of gratitude for your support. This is a dream come true for me!
*Special thanks to Sean Flora, Zippy Lomax, Ryan Mitchell, and as always, the ever-loving, ever-adventurous, ever-adorable love of mine, Jennifer Love. You all have made this project into a process of opening for me, and it fills me with gratitude. And we're just getting started!

Lyrics to the title track, "Unguarded Heart"
You ruined my plans to
have a plan for every word
The game that I played was
a song you'd already heard
A new way of thinking
and my thoughts put to the test
Now nothing holds water
But its weight is off my chest
What is a fight, but the playing out
of the silent hurt behind what we shout about
The radical beauty of the unguarded heart:
We come together when we're blown apart
Dreams I discarded
'cause they never came true
I barely got started
and of course I never told you
Now no one can blame you
for so kindly agreeing
yeah, what it comes down to is
I bet everything on one human being
I'm strong enough to stuff it down
not brave enough to risk defeat
I follow rules, but not the sound
of the beat...
of my unguarded heart
My program of defense
is fencing off my old pretense
My reward for all my strategies
is I'm half-awake and on my knees
It's a constant, everyday
compromise the dream away
If I can say, though I shake and stumble,
I'm willing to have it all quake and crumble
to feel at peace
to have release
in my unguarded heart
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenges are keeping our costs down, maintaining a consistent schedule, and balancing the work at hand with our day jobs, all while making sure to fulfill those rewards. We've done it before, and it was not without stress, but we are giving ourselves ample time to do things right, to take care and make it as relaxed a process as possible. It's always a challenge to bring all the elements of an album together, but we're up to that and more!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
