About

17 rejections. That's what the publishing-industry has shown me so far. Now I invite you to show me (and the world of literature) that it's you, the readers, that truly matter. I want to get this book directly into your hands, and self-publication is the best way to accomplish that goal. Please help me bring this book to life.

Nine Notes: A Discovery of Undying Lessons is a self-help psychology book that provides lessons on personal growth and meaningful living. It's packed with personal stories, psychology, philosophy, as well as historical descriptions and a good dose of humor (most of which are found in parentheses).

My Story and The Idea Behind This Book

What are your most valuable lessons? That’s not an easy question to answer. The one I gave, however, resulted in this very book you can help support.

At the age of 23, there are (at least) 9 lessons that I value:

  • Embrace the pain (to learn from it and become stronger)
  • Articulate yourself (to increase your conscious understanding of things)
  • Seek and give support (to make life better, together)
  • Observe the world (to learn about yourself and discover the patterns of success)
  • Face your fears (to overcome them and follow your dreams)
  • Aim high (to gain clarity, direction and motivation)
  • Align your actions (to bring your dreams into reality)
  • Allow adjustments (to allow yourself some freedom)
  • Balance your life (to live it on your own terms)

Now, why should you care, if they're "my" lessons?

Well, for starters, I believe that these lessons are timeless principles. Meaning, they're modes of being that work irrespectively of historic time-periods, geographical locations, and even individual factors such as thoughts and feelings.

They’re undying in their nature, have worked for centuries, and will probably continue to work for centuries to come. They existed long before I happened to stumble upon them, but I'm grateful that I did. So they're not really mine; they're everyone's.

I first discovered these lessons in the aftermath of depression and heartbreak, as they helped me get through the pain and on to a better path in life. I initially just lived them, and only later did I discover their timeless, undying nature—which I subsequently managed to think about and articulate (as well as I could).

Now I want to share the story of how I encountered them, as well as describe their psychological underpinnings and give suggestions on how to apply them in your own life. But most importantly, however, I want to inspire you to think of your own lessons; and perhaps inject you with the hope that there's lessons to be learned even in the darkest of times.

Why Self-publishing?

Despite the rejections from literary agents, I feel confident in the quality of this book. Although I'm still wrapping up the final edit and the last few details, I feel it's time for a publication once it's done. I've accomplished everything I wanted with this project, and I'm personally satisfied with it.

Since I can't satisfy everyone (and the publishing industry is selective and tough), I choose to satisfy my potential readers. Kickstarter provides the opportunity to do just that. If the interest is there and we reach the funding-goal, then the book will be published through Amazon.

About Me

My name is Jonas Ressem. I’m 23, and from a small town in the middle of Norway. I’m a psychology student, and I will have my bachelor’s degree completed by the spring of 2019.

I’m currently (and probably permanently) exploring life and what it means to be myself. What I learn, I try to discern through words. In this journey of exploration, I’m primarily influenced by psychology. But other things are philosophy, literature, and history (as well as just about anything I find interesting).

I’m constantly trying to make sense of myself and the world around me. And whenever I want to find out more about something, I write; because to me, writing is a better approach to thinking than just thinking. Nine Notes is a great example of that fact.

Where the Money Will Go

  • An editor (400$ / 3480kr)

Risks and challenges

The book will be published. But there is still a possibility for challenges along the way.

The book will be printed by Amazon. The signed copies (and the other paperbacks as well) will have to go by me. Therefore, the main potential challenge is shipping, but I will do everything in my power to make it go smoothly. If there's any trouble along the way, I will keep you updated.
