TRY AGAIN: An Illustrated Parenting Adventure is a choose your own adventure parenting tale featuring relatable and honest-to-god-happened-to-me parenting cartoons from yours truly.
What will YOU do when your baby has a blowout and poop is painted up her back while you're on the train? And what will YOU do if you have the chance to go sleep in the other room and leave your partner alone with the baby? These are the decisions you will face as a parent. Every page and almost everyday!
And I've been peed on, puked on, and pooped on. My ears start bleeding when I hear "The Wheels on the Bus," and Thomas the Tank Engine makes frequent cameos in my dreams...which is a long-winded way of saying I'm a dad.
Since my son was born two years ago, I've been drawing cartoons about parent life and posting them on my Instagram account, which has become a bit of a public journey. My cartoons have also been featured on Huffpost, Parents.com and BoredPanda.
And now I'm taking it one step further and offering you a chance to practice and hone your parenting skills on my son!
- A FUN GIFT for new and expecting parents.
- A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE for experienced parents.
- A CELEBRATION OF PARENTHOOD for everyone.
- A PARENTING GUIDE. I'm not an expert. In fact, I am quite the opposite: my toddler has peed on my partner's pillow under my watch and that's considered a mild one.
- A MEMOIR. I've drawn a lot of inspiration from my own parenting experience, but I'll also be looking for inspiration from other parents along the way.
Every page of text, typically representing a moment in parenting, will be accompanied by a relevant cartoon illustration.
There isn't a more appropriate book structure to capture the spirit of parenting than the Choose Your Own Adventure-style books you read growing up. You will be presented with over 40 choices during your journey through the first few years of parenthood - from small decisions like whether you bribe or threaten your toddler if they're not eating to bigger decisions like whether to fly with the baby or go somewhere closer for vacation. Each decision has consequences, so don't get stuck in an infinite loop of trying to put your crying baby to sleep when they're hungry...and of course, there are alternate endings, so be careful or else you might find your in-laws moving in with you!
The book will contain more pages of illustrations (at least 100 illustrations) than pages of text (probably 90 pages of text) because some cartoons will weave themselves into the narrative. Of the illustrations, at least 40% of them will be original while all the ones from my Instagram account will re-worked and colored.
Unfortunately, I'm not projecting to ship out books until the end of 2018. I have a day job that I plan to keep and a toddler I can't keep away from, so here's my timeline for the project.
As I've only started drawing two years ago, the cartoons usually take me a while, but fortunately I have built up quite a collection over the past couple of years, and I'm improving as an artist in general!
Like any parent, I fell in love with my kid the moment he arrived, and I wanted to be able to give my son my memories of him and his mother, so I started drawing cartoons of those small oft-forgotten moments (good and bad!) that I couldn't catch on camera. I would stay up every night after he went to bed, doodling away trying to recreate the memory that stuck with me from that day.
While I ultimately wanted to stitch together all those moments into a book specifically for him, I've also fallen in love with what it means to be a parent - all the joys, frustrations, and moments that go with it. This book is my way of celebrating parenthood...and also my way of easing some friends who are expecting into this unique and universal experience!

Risks and challenges
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME PUBLISHING A BOOK
Fortunately, self-publishing has only gotten easier over the years and there are many resources on the interwebs.
I've been reviewing printer options and plan to use PrintNinja. Regardless, there can always be delays in either printing or receiving of books. Because I want to make sure the book is of the highest quality, I'll be spending every penny on finishes and sacrificing faster shipping (e.g., by boat rather than plane). I've allowed for 8 weeks to print and ship, which I believe is a safe time frame.
I'M A WORKING PARENT (i.e., not all the time in the world)
BUT you know what two of my life dreams are? To write a book and to give the memories of my parenting journey to my son...so I have all the motivation in the world to see this project through just on that alone. Practically speaking, I've been drawing parenting cartoons for my Instagram for the past two years, so I'm already in creator-mode. That being said, I've also conservatively mapped out my timeline to completion.
P.S. I also have a few friends who are having babies at the end of this year and this something I've promised each of them...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
