*Update: We've reached our initial goal! However, we're not finished! We're trying to reach $10,000 to allow us to do 2 things:
1. Print more books.
2. Donate to a charity that deals with OCD and other emotional disorders.
The King's 6th Finger is the first collaborative effort between Jolby and Rachel Roellke. It is a tale about a King named Mortimer who is obsessed with the number 5. He has 5 towers on his castle, 5 moats around it, 5 knights on 5 horses, 5 queens, 5 servants, 5 meals... he's obsessed! Until one day, from his five-legged chair, he looks down at his hand and discovers that he's grown a 6th finger! What will he do? How does he remove it? What crazy plans do his advisors have in store for him? You'll have to get your hands on the book to see! The story will unfold in a whimsical rhyme accompanied by mid-century illustrations, ending with an important lesson about maintaining balance in your life.
Donations for this project will be put towards the printing of this book. We have chosen to self-publish and self-distribute the book, but timing and our "do it yourself" attitude lead us to turn to you, the community, to help us release this body of work. All of our contributors will be put on an exclusive mailing list to receive updates leading up to the release of the book. These updates will include goodies like new sketches, previews of pages from the book, sample writings, recordings of Jolby producing the art, videos, and a whole lot more. Once the book is published, we will donate 25 books to local elementary school libraries with posters of the book.
About Jolby: Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols come together to make Jolby, an illustration and design studio based in Portland, Oregon. After meeting in design school at the Art Institutes, Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols began their design careers in their hometown of San Diego. As their lives and careers progressed they found themselves in two very separate cities: Josh in Chicago and Colby in Portland. Though it would seem the distance would end their creative alliance, the two found new ways to co-produce, proving they may possibly share the same brain. Jolby combines their talents through Colby's artistic obsession with creatures and shapes and Josh's creative love for pattern and texture. In 2009, Josh moved to Portland, OR bringing the two artists together to collaborate in the same city for the first time. Heavily inspired by mid-century illustrators such as Charlie Harper and Paul Rand, their modern take on this kind of illustration shines through in the King's 6th Finger.
About Rachel Roellke: Originally a short poem, this story was fully written into a book with the help of Rachel Roellke. Rachel wrote her way through high school and college, finally majoring in Creative Writing at USC. She is now an elementary school teacher and enjoys making rhymes in her spare time, and dropping fat beats for other people to rhyme atop. Her background in both writing and education made her contribution to the project obvious.
We can't do this project without you! Your donations mean the world to us and with these fun rewards and kickbacks you can help us bring an important lesson to the world through art and rhyme-time.
