Why a joke book about the beach?
As a children's book author, I know the importance of introducing language in a fun way to kids, and of developing their sense of humor. Jokes help kids learn new words and definitions in a format that's silly and therefore, memorable. Joke books inspire kids to read aloud with others for a bonding laughable moment, and also gives them confidence to create their own jokes! Like this one:
Where do seahorses live?
I wrote Saltwater Sillies so families could have a fun, shareable read especially while visiting the beach. And hopefully, while they are enjoying the surf, their appreciation for the beach and ocean grows as does their desire to protect and clean it. If I surpass my funding goal, I will donate a portion of the profits from book sales to a non-profit ocean steward in Colorado called Inland Ocean Coalition.
About the Illustrator:
Stan is a fellow Coloradoan whom I met at a book festival. He typically draws zombie caricatures with a sense of humor, but turns out he's really good at drawing people as fish, too! He's an out-of-the-box thinker which is important to this project since I want to make a joke book that isn't just a listing of jokes, but will have some ocean facts sprinkled in plus full-page caricatures of ocean dwellers for visual humor as well. And the cool thing is you get a chance to be the subject of one of his caricatures!
I'm not kidding: You can be the subject of Stan's drawing
Yes, there are reward opportunities to be turned into a sea caricature!
You or a loved one can be my "seal" of approval which will appear on the back cover in color. Or, you can be a mermaid, a pirate, a shark or a lobster for an interior page. (I will acknowledge you in the credits as well for being a donor and the artist's muse.) Plus Stan is offering caricatures for other rewards. So here's your chance to get an original Stan Yan piece of art and to be in my book.
Design of book
- 5.25" x 8.5" paperback with glossy color cover
- 14 interior caricatures
- 1 seal caricature of a donor on the back cover
- 300 jokes plus fun ocean facts!
- color interior pages if stretch goal is met
How your donation will be spent
- Art, page design, layout and printer ready file: $1,725
- Copyediting: $175
- Printing of 500 joke books with b&w interior: $1096.50 plus estimated freight of $200 for $1296.50
- TOTAL $3,196.50 (rounded up to $3,200)
NOTE: Donations beyond my $3,200 goal will be used to either print a spot or full color on the interior pages, increase the print run, pay Kickstarter fees, pay the writer (me) - or cover all of the above!
Risks and challenges
The Kickstarter funding policy requires that my minimum goal of $3,000 is met for rewards to be processed and shipped. The greatest risk is the possibility of not meeting this goal for printing of the book. An unsuccessful campaign would result in your money being refunded without any rewards. In addition, I would be left to find alternative funding options to get my jokes out in the world.
Illustrations will be completed after funding. The timeline for caricatures to be completed and sent to you depends on you, the donor, getting your photo to Stan Yan to allow time for him to create his art.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
