Thanks Everybody for an amazing campaign! Your positive feedback has been overwhelming, and your support has really shown what an awesome platform Kickstarter is for small projects like this. In the next couple months, I will be updating regularly as we get closer to shipping. Meanwhile, if you missed the campaign, you can still head over to epicgrip.com to get on the pre-order list!
Smooth rounded edges, high-polish, killer grip, insane durability, fantastic price. You won't find ANY titanium pick at this price, much less one with this level of craftsmanship.
As mentioned on these awesome guitar sites. Get an EpicGrip, and then cruise the list to learn some new licks:
- Guitar Noize - Awesome blog and YouTube videos from down under.
- Guitarz - The original and world's longest-running guitar blog - Since 2002
- Truefire.com - Video courses video instructions and guitar blog
- Six String Soul (guitar blog) - A boutique & vintage guitar blog for the conscious guitarist.
Titanium (Ti) is an amazing ELEMENT... Ti is used in cars, planes, hiking gear, medical implants and spaceships, because it's light as plastic, with the strength of steel!!!!
So why do you need a Titanium guitar pick?
The high strength to weight ratio makes the EpicGrip a great general purpose pick, and when you need to do high speed precision picking, THIS should be the pick you reach for.
- "For all you rock stars out there, time to step up your guitar picks to titanium with EpicGrip. EpicGrip is designed to keep the jam sessions rocking." - The Crowdfund Mafia
A few years ago I custom laser-cut a batch of these picks, but they still needed finishing. I took a pick to my friend Michael's workshop, rounded the edges and sanded it smooth. The resulting pick felt nice and produced a rich full sound. It immediately became my favorite pick.
Because it doesn't slip, the EpicGrip feels like an extension of your hand... Sound-wise, Ti picks have a stronger attack if you hold them loosely, and a tighter grip softens the tone. It gives me an extra bit of dynamic range when I'm playing. Some rock guitarists in the 80's used to boil their strings to achieve a custom sound--now you can tweak your sound mid-riff, just by using the EpicGrip pick. Check out the sound in the video below.
Continuing with the story... Late last year I bought a grinder and improved my polishing technique. I gifted a few of these picks to friends and family with spectacular response, but the laborious process of grinding and polishing each pick was hugely time consuming. In the back of my mind I wanted to come up with a more efficient way of producing them for less, but I could not envision a reliable process to combine a high quality product with a reasonable price... and I'd probably still be stumping about it if not for a casual conversation last Christmas.
Enter my good friend Andrew, who used to run the R&D department for The Sharper Image. Andrew liked the pick I had, and offered to share his expertise and manufacturing connections to help get the per-pick cost down to an affordable level. I jumped at the chance to make this dream a reality.
So here's where we stand now...
We've nailed down a manufacturer and, after sorting through the details, and some minor tweaking, we've finalized the design.
Below is the Rounding/Polishing test photo from the manufacturer. The thin lines in the cut-out design have been thickened slightly to improve durability in subsequent versions (see last image for current design).
That's the story up until now, and I am excited to invite you to the next phase of production, and to be able to offer this awesome pick at a reasonable price.
If you make it into the first tier, you can pick up one shiny polished pick at a insanely low price! If the first batch is snapped up, you're still going to get a pick at less than the final selling price. The point is, I want to get these puppies out into the hands of musicians where they can sing. Enough about me though. Here are the Options:
Here is the single pick TITANIUM EpicGrip.
Or get two TITANIUM EpicGrips. Save a little on shipping and get two picks for cheaper than the same tier per-pick price.
As a Stretch Goal, if we pass the $6500 mark, I will add free SOLID COLOR electric anodizing as an option for EVERYONE'S picks. The color options will be SOLID Blue, SOLID Purple or SOLID Gold.
If we pass the $7000 mark, I will add free GRADIENT anodizing as an option (shown below). So tell all your guitarist friends to hop on board to get this train a-rolling. EpicGrips also make awesome necklaces or ear-rings for a lady friend. Just sayin'...
The photo above shows the range of available colors. If we get to the anodizing phase, I'll update with a list of what colors everyone is choosing.
The finalized design:
Clean round outer edges, super polished face, bigger cut-out gaps and slightly thicker bits between the gap-edges makes for a for a better grip, a stronger pick and a more balanced look and feel.
Praise for the EpicGrip:
"It's a great pick, easy to hold on to, and the bevel, which is
missing from most non-traditional picks is really great!"
- Dale Bodmer
"Looks great, plays great, and is ****ing indestructible"
"...so cool! I want one and I don't even play!"
Just thought I'd mix things up a bit since I haven't updated in a bit... Here's a bunch of the proto EpicGrips outside. I've been keeping them in an Altoids tin, but this solution is way more stealthy... (Shout out to Mary @ leatherdicebags.com for sending a sample...)
I'll be sending out an official update email soon...
Risks and challenges
I am dedicated to getting your picks out to you as soon as possible, provided they are reliably awesome. The EpicGrip is an experience that I want to share, and I want it to be a 100% quality product. I don't anticipate any issues... the only possible hitch may be a production or shipping issue from the foundry. If any event delays release, I will immediately send out emails with the current status of the project.
I thank you for joining me on this journey. I expect it will be a pleasant and rapid trip. As production moves forward, I will update regularly with the latest developments. Check the FAQ section for more details, or post a question. I'll be happy to elaborate on the process if you want to know more.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The EpicGrip is 1mm thick, the same thickness as a standard "Heavy" style plastic pick.
The colors are not a coating, but the actual surface of the metal. The colors will not rub off from regular use. If you ever want to change the pattern, you can remove the colored surface by sanding gently with wet-and-dry sand paper if you like, and then re-color by hitting the pick with a blow-torch for about 15 seconds. Be sure to use pliers though, or you might burn your fingers.
Just head over to epicgrip.com. As soon as I've finished shipping the EpicGrips to the Kickstarter supporters, I will start shipping out the picks pre-ordered on epicgrip.com.
