Hello and welcome to my page!! You can also check out more pictures of the cards at www.facebook.com/constructionpapertarot !
My name is John Withee and I am a radical native of Kalamazoo, Michigan. I am also the artist behind the Construction Paper Tarot Deck, a 2-year project that is nearly complete!
The project is simple: I wanted to make a unique collector's deck that anyone can enjoy, that would boil down the basic elements of the tarot into fun, easy-to-identify cards.
Due to the complex nature of many of the designs on tarot cards, I made some design decisions in my attempt to keep the cards universal, such as leaving the faces blank, but always to include every vital detail in my designs.
This deck will be industry-standard size for tarot cards, which are a little taller than normal playing cards.
So far it has proven to be no easy task. While on a few rare occasions I've been known to use an exact-o knife, virtually everything on these cards were cut out by hand, by sight, by me, using a single pair of blue scissors.
Nothing from any previous tarot deck were ever photocopied or scanned in the creation of this piece. ALL of the artwork is COMPLETELY original.
I believe that this is going to be a fantastic deck for everyone to enjoy! So please consider supporting my kickstarter for some radical rewards! :-)
Risks and challenges
After the project is funded, I'll be working very closely with a tarot deck publisher that I've been in contact with during the past few months. I tried a previous kickstarter which failed, so I'm setting my sights a little lower. With the money I raise from this kickstarter, I'll still hopefully be able to have an initial print run of 150-250 decks! Wow!!
Making each card has been wildly challenging. Because I cut out these pieces by sight and hand, I often have to re-cut pieces three or four times before I've made one just right.
After I make each card, I scan it into my computer so that if any accidents happen to the original, I'll still have those files! I'll be turning my living room into a mail-order brigade once posters and physical decks arrive from the printer. It's going to be a lot of work, but also a lot of fun, and I can't wait to see this project finally come to fruition!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
