The War is a documentary-style film capturing the lives and events of a world war in a fantasy world.
(Readers of WICKED FANTASY will find the world very familiar...)
We've already completed the first episode (which you can watch on Youtube), but we're looking for your help to complete the second. And, if we're lucky, maybe a few more.
The War includes illustrations from many artists, voice actors, sound effects and original music.
If you want to know exactly what we're up to, You can watch the first episode here!
We plan on releasing The War on iTunes, but everyone who backs it will get a digital download. Also, those who back us for at least $25 will get a DVD of the first two episodes.
The concept for The War began after watching the Ken Burns documentary on the American Civil War with my wife, Rochelle. While it was Ro's first time, I had seen it many, many times. As I watched it, my mind wandered to thinking, "What if Ken Burns did a documentary on the war in The Lord of the Rings?"
That idea pushed me to create a documentary on a war that never happened, drawing from stories and legends from wars across the world. I would include all the typical fantasy races: humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, orks and the rest. I wanted to tell personal stories about the lives of people caught up in a violent world war. Not a history told through impersonal facts, dates and charts, but through the voices of the people who fought in it, who lived through it and who died.
I don't like the very impersonal way most fantasy literature handles war, focusing on glory and honor of the great heroes, but never really looking at the common man: the soldiers who stand on the front lines. With The War, I want to change that. Abraham Lincoln called those who lost their lives in the American Civil War, men who had given, "the last full measure of devotion." I want to look at such men and women, learn about them from their own words and learn how war transforms everyday lives.
The first episode was a real labor of love, made for very little money. We made it with no cash, trading my freelance writing for art from the amazing Aaron Acevedo. We also used public domain photos from the old world, pictures from Renaissance Festivals and SCA camps. I gathered a group of friends together to do the voices and made my own sound effects. I even used Garage Band to make the music. Everything was home made.
With your help, we can increase our production values. We can get more original art, more music and perhaps even add video. With additional funds, we can acquire better editing software and hardware, better sound equipment and improve the overall quality of the production.
We can make The War even greater than it already is.
Indeed, The War takes place in the world of WICKED FANTASY, a world we designed for use with the PATHFINDER roleplaying game. It is a possible future for the people of Estevere, a world-wide event that will forever change and scar their lives. The uvandir and the forest elves and the Reign of Men are already familiar to those who have read WICKED FANTASY, but you do not need to be familiar with that book to enjoy The War.
We have some great plans for The War. A larger cast, more illustrations, more sound effects. We want to make this as powerful a presentation as possible. That's why we're asking for your help.
Please watch the first episode and decide if you'd like to see more of The War. If so, please feel free to contribute. Also, check out our STRETCH GOALS, below!
From the beginning, The War was a labor of love. We made the first episode with very little funding. Now, with your help, we can, for example, acquire better sound equipment. We are currently using a standard Powermac plus Garage Band to record our voice actors. Our microphone is a good one, but we can do better. With better equipment, we can give our audio a better tone and quality.
We can also acquire more art. Aaron Acevedo and Jessica Kauspedas did a great job on the first episode and we'd like them to do more. Art is our biggest budgetary concern. With additional funding, we can purchase more prints for The War as well as bring in additional artists. We're looking at adding Mauro Mussi and Marissa Kelly as well as potential new artists.
Also, sound effects are not cheap. Sure, you can get low quality mp3s off the internet, but to give The War a real sense of quality, buying and making sound effects is costly. I'd like to use video effects as well, and additional funds will help make that a reality.
We want to release The War on iTunes. That will cost us a little as well for encoding fees. Your pledge goes to help paying for those fees.
Finally, we can provide beautiful packaging for DVDs. I want to produce DVDs of The War, providing a physical copy of the digital experience.

Risks and challenges
We've already completed one episode and the voice actors and artists are ready for Episode 2. The only problems we can encounter are scheduling. The last time we made an episode, our production schedule allowed for three months. It took us a total of two to finish the episode. This time, because we have one episode behind us, we already know all the pitfalls and traps and can avoid them easier.
I am working with Mark Diaz Truman again to make this Kickstarter as successful as our previous two. Both Houses of the Blooded: Wilderness and Wicked Fantasy were huge and we're hoping to make The War an equal success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
