7th Sea Cinematic Trailer

So remember how we were talking about the future?

I’ve been working with producer, Neal Fischer, for a few years adapting my books—such as Shotgun Diaries, Houses of the Blooded and Galaxy XXX—into TV and movie pitches. When JWP acquired the rights to 7th Sea, we immediately started talking about possibilities.

We know that the last few days of any campaign on Kickstarter are usually a wild ride. Since we’ve already hit $1 million… we can start to dream big.

We want to make a 2 minute trailer for a 7th Sea TV or movie project. It’s an old strategy used by directors such as the Coen Brothers: make the trailer for the movie you want to make and show it to distributors. We’ll run the tape and then say... “This is the movie we’re going to make.”

New Stretch Goal ($1.25 million): 7th Sea Cinematic Trailer

If we reach $1.25 Million, we'll commission a two-minute cinematic trailer that we can use to pitch studios and production companies in Hollywood on making a 7th Sea movie or television show. We think 7th Sea is an amazing property, and we'd like to see it up on the big screen (or at least on Netflix)!

And here’s a video announcing this exciting stretch goal:

We’re incredibly excited about working with Neal and his team. He was the main force behind the indie cult hit Sushi Girl and more importantly, he’s a gamer. (Big L5R nerd. I tease him about it all the time.)

Neal Fischer is the United States representative of Davis Films and world-renowned Producer Samuel Hadida, whose work includes the Resident Evil & Silent Hill films, Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Solomon Kane, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Domino, and True Romance. Currently Neal is developing properties from the Davis Films’ library of titles for the big screen, including Castle Wolfenstein, Vampire Hunter D, House of Night and Golgo 13.

Neal also works closely with Davis Films’ distribution office, Metropolitan Filmexport, located in Paris, France. In addition to his work at Davis Films, Neal recently produced the genre-bending feature Sushi Girl. Neal is set to produce Tony Todd’s directorial debut Catalytic, and is developing a slate of four films with legendary martial arts master Sonny Chiba. Neal is also part of the team producing the phenomenally fan funded films; Prelude to Axanar and Star Trek: Axanar.

You can read more about Neal here: http://www.sushigirlmovie.com/on-the-side/neal-fischer/

If we reach this goal, we’ll put Neal and his crew to work on making this trailer amazing. And we’ll share early photos, video, and more with you all as the trailer comes together!

7th Sea Kickstarter Party - Sunday, March 13th

Now that the end is near, it’s time for us to figure out how we’re going to celebrate the last few hours. And we can’t think of any better way to celebrate than spending time with friends and fans!

Thus… on Sunday, March 13th, we’re throwing a 7th Sea Kickstarter party at Imperial Outpost in Glendale, AZ. Huge thanks to Darren at Imperial Outpost for welcoming us, and keeping the store open late for the party!

And while we don’t have room for all 9,000+ backers at the event, we’d love to see some of you join us for a night of fun, food, and festivities as we watch the clock tick down to the end of the Kickstarter. And right after the Kickstarter is over… we’ll have a 7th Sea costume contest with special prizes!

Obviously, most of our backers won’t be able to make it. We’ll try to set up a live cam or something for you all, but we do want to invite folks out who live close enough that they can make the party. Because tickets are limited, we’re going to be doing a lottery. If you’d like to come, please fill out this form:

7th Sea Kickstarter Party Lottery: http://goo.gl/forms/yf9QFxHhWI

Anyone can fill out the form to get a ticket to the party, but we’re holding a number of spots just for Kickstarter backers. Thank you all for what you’ve made possible!

I am seeing it like some others here - I fear that whatever people are saying now, at the end of the day time and money that should be invested in the RPG books will be invested in making a movie. Do not get me wrong, I would love to see a 7th Sea movie but producing a cinematic trailer should simply not be part of this kickstarter. It is way too far away from what this kickstarter started out with.

I'm with Walter, The pirate theme has a great deal of stage spot-light and i don't remember any recent true swashbuckling adventure (without a pirate focus), and i think it would be a waste to the 7th sea world to be limited to this. There is so much options to go for.

    3. Walter Milani-Mueller on

Pirates, pirates… why always pirates? A 7th Sea tv show would be an opportunity to melt Indinana Jones or Tomb Raider like adventures with 17th/18th century swashbuckling! Imagine a small group of adventurers setting sail for expeditions to unknown shores or the depths of mysterious forests, mountain ranges, or deserts. 7th Sea is also a game about exploring a mostly unknown (and new) world with magical mysteries beneath every second stone and around every third corner. Imagine duelling and swordplay in front of ancient ruins that hold long lost treasures. I'd really prefer a show along that lane rather than another "Black Sails", "Pirates of the Caribbean", or "Three Musketeers"…

@ARBco - Given that we're at 3,000% of our goal, we've got plenty of cash on hand to make sure folks get their books. We think it's really important to find ways to keep the community healthy with new blood. And remember... there's a reason we're hiring Neal! We'll stay focused on the books, and Neal will be the one making the trailer happen.

I can only hope that a Netflix 7th Sea Series becomes a reality... that would be very cool. (and there would be a need for scriptwriters... :D ... )

    6. Jennifer Gorman on

      Huge fan of this idea!

    7. ARBco on

This seems like a lofty distraction, and not one I think is relevant to the Kickstarter in question. I'd rather just make sure you have money in reserve to make sure you can live up to the years of fulfillment you'll be doing. Or to give more to the creative folks involved.

I know this is the kind of thing that no doubt sounds like a massively exciting opportunity, but it seems like worrying kickstarter bloat to me as a backer.

    8. Kevin Brown on

Initially speaking a tv show is probably way more ambitious as it requires a longer overarching plot line. TV shows with a basis on intrigue are even harder because that plot line can run for multiple seasons. My preference would be a tv series, possibly on netflix or such, but all the most recent examples I've seen have been movies.

I'm seeing a cross between the courtly intrigue in Game of Thrones and the swashbuckling goodness of Zorro. Maybe throw in some pirate shenanigans of "Pirates of the Caribbean" caliber.

This is amazing! I hope we hit that goal!

    10. Krista R. Borja on

Man, I think that is the thing about a 7th sea Movie/TV Series.... What would it be? Would it focus on a single group of heroes, and follow a adventure path type story, or would it be much grander, showing off various main characters alla Game of Thrones, where we would see various politics, intrigue, war, as well as the fringe characters from like.. pirate nations or beyond.

I mean, you can set it to whatever you want, even without adding any additional elements. I mean, I am guessing it would be off the 2nd Ed plotlines, rather then first. But, Court show about the Intrigue of ANY nations political structure (with possible exception of Eisen, since at least from 1ed, they were pretty solitary), or a war front show about soliders fighting in the War for Castille (since that seems to be returning), or a high adventure swashbuckling thing about the Brotherhood, focusing on a ship of pirates. Or it could focus on a secret society, giving us a more indepth look into the machinations of various Orginizations... or it could be a hodge podge where their are several seemingly unrelated plots going on, culminating in a massive payoff down the line.

I am all abuzz with What could happen! Also, I wish I was visiting my Grandma, she lives in AZ.. and I got some friends down their as well. But alas, I will be unable to make it down. Makes me sad, I mentioned this in one of my posts about having a massive 7th Sea convention...

      @Kirby - The party starts at 7pm.

@Jeffry - We're not going to be shooting the trailer. Instead, Neal is going to be helping us put it together, so that we have lots of time to work on books!

    12. Kirby on

What time is the party? I'm guessing it ends around 9 when the kickstarter ends?

    13. Michael Morfeld on

      Is John local to AZ?

    14. Henry Eshleman on

As a HUGE Sushi Girl fan... hell yes.

When will I be able to buy brotherhood I'd the wolf on bluray in the us?

    16. Joshua Pluta on

TV show, John. TV show. I'm sure that Amazon or Netflix would love a well-developed fantasy world with a unique twist they can market as their "Game of Thrones"

    17. Jeffry Crews on

I'm very nervous about this goal. Different media is expensive and there are a ton of books that need to written and printed.

    18. Troy Lenze on

@Kirby: I think you know what the right choice is. :)

And I'm glad to see something fun and awesome like this. JWP have said they can't produce any more books for the KS. However this is a great alternative to that.

    19. Carolina on

Now that it's mentioned, Brotherhood of the Wolf was super 7th Sea-y! I can certainly imagine a movie with that kind of atmosphere (with some pirates and sorcery added to it too).
Congrats on everything achieved so far.

Just told this to some friends while drinking a brew in my local gamestore and a few just almodt fainted

Imperial Outpost is literally five minutes away from me, but I promised my group we'd do character creation for our upcoming Pathfinder campaign this Sunday. Oh the conflict :(

    22. Alfredo Tarancón on

See? This was totally unexpected and totally cool. This was the kind of stretch goal I was hoping for! Maybe it's not rpg-related, but it helps to make the brand better known.. I really hope you can achieve it :D

Great idea. Be sure to cast you net wide - the BBC over here in Blighty has a great track record of backing 'unknown's to smash hits. I would love for this to come to fruition.
