Greetings! You are discovering this project as I try to raise funds for submitting Shadowed to film festivals around the world. Thanks to a tremendous community of supporters, we reached our first goal of having enough money to complete a high quality post-production treatment of the movie. Now, with this psychological thriller set to be completed sometime in Spring 2012, my focus is on having enough funds to get this movie out to enough film festivals to reach a wide audience.
Festival submission fees average $50 apiece, if I hit the early deadlines. Previously, my plan was to submit to 4-5 festivals a month, depending on what I could afford at the time. If we don’t raise another dime, I am still one of the most fortunate guys on earth. But every dollar that goes into this campaign above our initial goal goes straight into covering festival submission costs, and ultimately gets Shadowed out to more audiences.
In honor of this effort, I’ve created two new rewards, including an $75 reward that allows you to specify a city in which you’d like Shadowed screened. We’ll submit to the most suitable festival in the area, and will do our best to make it in, as well as recognize you for making it possible.
Thank you to everyone for all of your support!
THE 'SHADOWED' BACKSTORY
Shadowed is a suspense-thriller six years in the making. Making a feature length film is a rare opportunity, and I wanted to do everything that I could to make sure that I did it right. During those six years, I directed several short films to develop my skills, spent endless hours writing and rewriting a script worth turning into a feature, and saved up the seed money to launch the project. This past March, the stars finally aligned, with the funds, script, and experience all in place. Since then, my time has been devoted to making Shadowed a success, a journey involving amazing people, a tremendous amount of work, and an incredible life experience. Now the journey heads to the homestretch.
WHY AM I MAKING ‘SHADOWED’?
I started this project to make an intelligent, tightly plotted thriller that entertains audiences and is worth watching multiple times, in the vein of The Usual Suspects, Memento, and L.A. Confidential. I just wish that there were more of these available to watch. So I set out to make one of my own.
But I also wanted to prove that if you have a good script and a deep well of dedication, a great movie can be made without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars. And after years of script development, months of planning, and 15 remarkably successful days of shooting, Shadowed has almost achieved that goal. The footage is beautiful, the acting tremendous, the scenes are haunting. And now you are the final piece of the puzzle.
WHAT IS ‘SHADOWED’ ABOUT?
Shadowed is about a group of friends who must survive a night in the wilderness after one of them is found stabbed to death. The dilemma is whether the killer is out in the woods, or is one of their own. The answer depends on unraveling the six month old mystery of their friend Sophia, who died suspiciously and whose killer was never found.
This movie is for those who enjoy a puzzling murder mystery built around strong, layered characters, and for fans of scary movies who don’t need the blood and gore. Shot on the beautiful RED One camera (same camera used in 'Winter's Bone', amongst many other multi-million dollar films), Shadowed is powered by the brilliant performances of our actors, depicting a group of friends unraveling amidst suspicions, betrayals, and fears.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
A movie like this doesn’t happen without an extremely talented cast and crew. Given that they are in high demand, I was profoundly fortunate to work with these fine people, as each brought passion for their work and a firm belief that Shadowed could be something great. I encourage you to check out what they've done previously—they will blow you away.
… and Sean Nelson as the haunting villain, Dan Liebning.

WHY DOES ‘SHADOWED’ NEED MORE FUNDING?
The riskiest part of any movie production is getting everything shot, as expenses can run wild, or obstacles might arise that prevent the movie from getting done. Our initial round of funding was focused on getting Shadowed ‘in the can’, to make sure that we had shot a good movie before we spent another dime.
And I'm so very proud to say that we've got something special on our hands.
Having witnessed what the team was able to capture on our small budget, I am convinced that Shadowed warrants a high quality post-production treatment. So I am reaching out to you to get this movie to the finish line. Based on the money we had left over from principal photography, we need $10,600 to complete all of the stages of post.
But that is just the minimum to get our nose past the line. The more we exceed our goal, the more we can avoid short-changing any step of the process and make Shadowed as great as it can be. This means getting additional hours in the sound mixing and color correction studios, affording better graphics and special effects (e.g. muzzle flashes), and having the resources to smooth out any edges that might otherwise take the audience out of the experience.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
If we reach our fundraising goal (and only if—your credit card isn’t charged a cent if we fall short of our goal), your money will go directly towards the remaining post-production services, that all-important magic that binds everything together into a seamless movie experience. Here are the remaining steps that we need to complete:
- Editing: This involves hundreds of hours cutting the shots together, revising and adjusting the flow of the movie to hit just the right notes and build to the best moments of tension.
- Sound Design: We painstakingly recorded superb audio on set (the echoes in the silence are particularly unnerving), and at this stage the sound is carefully balanced and mastered to carry you deep into the story. In addition, sound effects and 5:1 surround mixing are infused to create a fully haunting experience.
- Original Score: Charles-Henri Avelange will be composing the score for Shadowed, using Scandinavian themes to create a unique twist on the 'scary movie' genre of music. The end effect will be a fresh and new sensation of suspense and intrigue.
- Color Grading: The images that we captured will be balanced for light and color, creating a rich visual experience for the viewer.
Each step involves tremendous dedication and time by the talented individuals managing each piece, which is why they cost as much as they do. But, like acting or filming, each is a creative medium unto itself, so you will be directly contributing to getting a work of art out into the world.
