Very disappointed to find out this project didn’t get the rightful funding it deserves. I think a part of what went wrong was the fact that the update to the Japanese app only came out a week ago and people didn’t have time to get to know this awesome addition. I will definitely back this project again when it relaunches. Keep up the good work!

I was so excited when I found this on Kickstarter, it's a really great idea and I'm glad to hear that it's still happening, even if it will take longer. Keep us all in the loop and I'm sure your audience will follow you if you decide to relaunch or use another funding source!

    3. Outlier Linguistic Solutions 3-time creator on December 27

      Thanks for the support, everyone!

We're considering a relaunch, but first we're going to take some time to analyze what went wrong, what we could have done better, etc. I'll put up a more official/detailed announcement soon.

Regardless of whether we relaunch or not, we'll be going ahead with the dictionary. We've shown that there's definitely interest in a product like this for Japanese learners; we simply need to get the word out better.

Please keep going and let us know what is happening. I was really disappointed that you did not get funding.
      Have you tried Indiegogo?

    5. Stuart Woodward on December 27

I'm sad that this Kickstarter didn't work out. This looks like a great addition to the Japanese App and I would really enjoy using it on a daily basis.

Do consider relaunching this KS if not funded. I think you need to make Chinese version available too in the rewards section.

    7. CorbinInJapan on December 19, 2017

Even if the Kickstarter is not successful, please continue working on this!!

I think this will come to be known as an invaluable resource in the future of Japanese language learning.

We'll keep working on it, but it will take longer to release.

      Thanks for your continued support!

In a world where engaging with general audiences is almost anathema in the academy, the Outlier team has earned my eternal gratitude for bringing so much learning to the rest of us. I still remember how mind-blowing your earliest blog posts deconstructing modern hanzi were. I can't wait to see the kanji edition.

The campaign goal seems very reasonable, considering they have to pay several researchers, full-time and part-time, over at least a couple of years. If a mainstream publishing house undertook this, it would cost them ten times as much—and they would of course pass on those expenses to the consumer.

Let me find a turtle plastron and do some divinations, asking the ancestors to help this campaign succeed!

I'd really like this to succeed, and I've shared it with everyone I know who is interested in Japanese, but what will you do if the funding doesn't succeed?

    11. Outlier Linguistic Solutions 3-time creator on December 12, 2017

Keep in mind, we’re working on this full time, and it’s a huge project. There are several hundred kanji which either differ from their Chinese counterparts (and thus require further research on our part), or aren’t common in Chinese (and thus need to be done from scratch), or are used only in Japanese (the kokuji 国字, kanji created in Japan). Not to mention the meaning section for each kanji will have to be more or less done from scratch due to the issues specific to learning Japanese. Then there’s also the cost of adapting, printing, and shipping the printed posters, not to mention software subscriptions, Renzo’s revenue share for each copy sold, Kickstarter’s cut, accounting and legal, etc.

Of course, we could do it with less money, but it would take longer.

I must admit, having shared this with an entire community of Japanese learners, the feedback has resoundingly been that the level of funding asked for appears to be high. I too was surprised when I saw how high how was but assumed you'd be fine given your previous product.

We'll announce some stretch goals once we're closer to the goal!

    14. Yan Fan on December 10, 2017

Looks pretty cool! Looking forward to using it :D

    15. CorbinInJapan on December 7, 2017

Also, any proposed stretch goals if things go well enough?

    16. CorbinInJapan on December 7, 2017

I would also like to see 1-kyuu kanji kentei!

    17. Elias on November 27, 2017

Oh, I would definitely love to see the 1-kyū level of the kanji kentei being applied to the dictionary! Hopefully, there will be a good amount of demand for it.

      on November 27, 2017

      Got it, thank you.

    19. Outlier Linguistic Solutions 3-time creator on November 27, 2017

The Japanese app ( already has a built-in flash card system, and they'll be adding even more robust study functionality soon. Our dictionary will integrate with all of those features.

    20. Ved Uttamchandani
      on November 27, 2017

Given the level of funding requested, are there plans for an in-built SRS system to teach people the Kanji too? As a dictionary, seems it'll be useful for reference but with limited structured learning.

    21. Outlier Linguistic Solutions 3-time creator on November 27, 2017

I've added an image to the main page which shows a comparison between the two editions. Note that the main entry is the same, but the Expert Edition will contain an extra "Expert info" section which goes into much more detail.

    22. Outlier Linguistic Solutions 3-time creator on November 27, 2017

Yes, if you back the Expert Edition, you'll get the Essentials Edition and regular updates until Expert is finished.

      @Jim & Ved,

Both editions will include both the Joyo and Jinmeiyo kanji. The difference is in the amount of detail in each entry. We may eventually expand it to include all the Kanji Kentei 1-kyuu kanji if there's enough demand for that.

    23. Ved Uttamchandani
      on November 27, 2017

      I agree with @Jim.

Jim Zorn on November 27, 2017

Will the expert edition include only the Joyo Kanji or will it include the Jinmeiyo kanji as well? Ideally, I would like it to contain all of the kanji included in 1-kyuu level of the kanji kentei.

    25. Ved Uttamchandani
      on November 27, 2017

The expert package is meant to be delivered a year after the essentials package?
In which case people pledging for the expert package would have access to all essentials features while waiting for the expert features, correct?
