About

What is Kay Pacha?

Welcome to Kay Pacha - a game of extraordinary powers, blood feuds and fierce political rivalries, set against the backdrop of an alternate history South America.

In 1534, Francisco Pizarro was on the cusp of conquering the Inca people of South America. Beginning to assimilate their culture even as he butchered their armies, he sent out teams of loyal subjects to find, catalogue and destroy sites of important Inca heritage. One of these teams stumbled across an ancient vault left long forgotten and the history of the continent was changed forever.

Accidentally opening a passageway to the Inca gods for the briefest of moments, the eight men present at the vault were each granted a unique set of powers by a different deity, transforming them into superhuman beings.

Using these powers, Francisco Pizarro conquered all of South America and declared it an independent Empire in his own name.

300 years on, the children of those touched by the gods have formed their own houses, each with a distinct culture, set of strongholds and suite of powers. They are divided between those that fight to preserve the Pizarran Empire and those who would tear it down entirely.

As you create your character in Kay Pacha you will select two bloodlines, giving you access to diverse power combinations unlike any other pen and paper role playing game.

Your mother might have belonged to the Children of the Sun, giving you the power to weaponise light and burn your enemies to cinders or force maize to grow tall from the most barren land. Your father, however, may have been a member of Las Konatas, capable of implanting false memories in others or subjecting them to terrible tortures through the power of thought alone. With these powers combined your character could become powerful enough to unite the whole empire in the name of their King, or bring it crashing down around his feet.

Your story will be played out in a universe carefully crafted and applied to a specially developed d20 dice system. Designed to accommodate a vast array of skills and facilitate smooth and effective combat, Kay Pacha puts you in the middle of a rich world of intrigue, heroism, danger and deceit. With the fate of all South America resting on a knife edge, which way you tip the balance of power rests entirely in your hands.

Who are we?

We are Joseph Ewens and Johnny Chiodini, also known as DF Games. Kay Pacha was built from our experiences role-playing together over many years, culminating in the desire to shape a rich and original world of our own. Kay Pacha began with the goal to make character creation as varied and vibrant as the world itself. Choosing your bloodlines in Kay Pacha connects you instantly to the political machinations at work in the Pizarran Empire - forcing you to make decisions about where you stand, with a character purpose-built to back up those convictions, right down to that golden ichor running through your veins.

In a way - over the countless hours of writing, rewriting and playtesting - Kay Pacha has seeped its way into our blood. We have absolute confidence in its quality and hope you will share in that conviction. Trust us when we say that your faith will be amply rewarded.

A Continent of Blood

Creating a character in Kay Pacha is all about choosing a lineage. In setting terms, this determines the allegiances of your father and mother, along with the house that you were raised in. In game terms, each bloodline will unlock a huge bank of different powers from which you can mix and match as you create your character and improve them through experience.

In the Pizarran Empire, some houses are committed to supporting the King, while others seek to tear him down. Elsewhere, a few mysterious neutral bloodlines pursue their own enigmatic agendas. Let’s take a look at these different houses, to give you a flavour of the bubbling cauldron that is the world of Kay Pacha.

Las Konatas

Patron deity - Chasca, Goddess of Dawn and Twilight

Las Konatas are one half of the Liman Alliance - a pact made centuries ago with the Batalión Del Rey at the founding of the Empire. This accord formed the seat of the Empire's power and declared resistance houses as enemies of the state.

Las Konatas function as a cultural assimilation department. Its members are obsessed with the pursuit of knowledge and the subjugation of the native culture. This cold, methodical approach to the destruction of an entire people has made Las Konatas the most feared and hated of all the houses.

The Event gifted Las Konatas with tremendous mental abilities. Famed for their eidetic memories and ability to see through lies and deception, they have become powerful manipulators of weaker minds. Rumours among the common folk (known colloquially as burridos) tell of men and women capable of forcing people to forget whole conversations, hiding entire buildings from plain sight, or even forging documents and torturing people without laying a finger on either.

Batalión Del Rey

Patron Deity - Catequil, God of Thunder & Lightning

The other half of the Liman alliance, the Batalión Del Rey, provides the muscle behind the Pizarran Empire. While they initially proved instrumental in spreading Pizarro’s influence and severing the ties with Spain & Portugal, they soon became chief law enforcers in the fledgling Empire.

The Event gave the Batalión unparalleled martial ability - a gift that was quickly developed into ‘The Principles’. These form a strict code that teaches not only the most effective military strategies the world has ever seen, but instructs the tenets of a loyal Batalión soldier’s everyday life.

Forsetim

Patron Deity - Mama Cocha, Goddess of the Sea

The people of the Forsetim are perhaps the greatest mystery in all of the Pizarran Empire. Everything, from their intentions and ways of life to their clouded history, is a source of speculation for all those outside its numbers - no mean feat, given Las Konatas’ insatiable hunger for knowledge. The only absolute certainty about these curious isolationists is their ability to commune with nature.

The Forsetim live by the example of their Norwegian progenitor - making offerings to the Norse Gods and covering themselves with runic tattoos of great artistry. From The Event, the Forsetim gained the ability to manipulate the world around them - changing the very structure of objects to make them harder or more malleable as it suits their purposes. Their most powerful craftsman can create entire settlements woven from still living trees, as well as weapons and armour beyond compare.

Good House Corvid

Patron Deity - Conivaya, the Lunar God

Cloaked in shadow and poised to strike, the Good House Corvid has stalked the Liman houses like a carrion crow ever since the defection of its founder, priest Perfectus Medina Guzman. Unable to reconcile himself with the wishes of the barbaric Francisco Pizarro, Perfectus slipped away and began to build a house of gifted assassins, valuing skill with the blade over any other virtue - and certainly over any god.

This is a house of supremely gifted killers, each of them taking inspiration from the corvids that cry out, hoarsely, in the skies above. There are whispers of assassins lying in wait disguised as flocks of crows, killers disappearing from sight only to appear thirty feet away in an instant, and even people sprinting up sheer walls to reach a hapless target.

Las Nomádas

Patron deity - Ekkeko, God of Hearth & Wealth

While the other houses have an established base somewhere in the Empire, Las Nomádas are an entirely nomadic people. Their progenitor, Dabir Akhtar, went missing soon after The Event, travelling the continent and founding a house scattered to the wind. His children grew up knowing they were different, and yet not alone. Seeking answers, they gradually found one another and started the Great Search for the conquistador who sired them.

In addition to remarkable skills in combat, The Event gifted Akhtar and his progeny with a great aptitude for both survival and secrecy. A nimble bloodline, Las Nomádas members are able to travel further at a time and survive in areas far harsher than anyone else in the Pizarran Empire. Through generations spent roaming the lands they have also become experts in hiding their movements and communicating with others through a graceful secret language.

Las Nomádas have also been the keenest of any house to embrace flintlock weapons and have mastered many forms of gunpowder trickery.

Children of the Sun

Patron Deity - Inti, God of the Sun

The Children of the Sun are the banner around which the other resistance houses rally, and against which much of the Liman Alliance’s ire is directed. Born of the elder of the two Inca brothers present at the Event, they are a house of fierce and proud warriors, sworn to release the grip of the Liman Alliance and return the continent to the Inca peoples. While they recognise the European influence on the Empire is now too deeply ingrained to ever be completely expunged, they will not rest until governance of the land is turned over to the natives who inhabited it before the conquest began.

The Children of the Sun are one of very few houses to correctly identify the Inca gods as the source of The Event. As such, they are devoted to the worship of Inti, the Sun God from whom their powers are sourced. Inti, they say, smiled on them on that fateful day - granting the power to harness and wield light through their corporeal beings. The Children of the Sun are able to cast beams of intense heat, generate devastating shockwaves, and bring light to the darkest caverns of the Empire.

Sons of the Deep

Patron Deity: Supay - God of Death, Lord of Uku Pacha

The Sons of the Deep are the dark, murderous heart of the resistance. Haunting the caves and unguarded corners of the empire, they bring a menace to the fight against the Liman Alliance that even the other resistance houses have grown to fear.

Born of the younger of the two Inca brothers at The Event, just like the Children of the Sun this house grew up with an intense hatred of Pizarro’s forces and a desire to see the land placed back into the hands of the Inca. Where the two houses differ, however, is their vision of how this would take place: while the Children of the Sun wish for an Inca government to rebuild the country, the Sons of the Deep will not be content until they have driven out - or killed - every European on the continent.

The Sons of the Deep are touched by the Inca underworld of Uku Pacha, allowing them develop the dreaded school of Fugue Craft. At its lowest level this grants the Sons of the Deep a kind of second sight - lending insights otherwise unavailable to them. More skilled practitioners, however, are able to travel briefly into Uku Pacha to bind and summon the demons that stalk this under-realm. Fugue Craft revels in its own depravity; delighting in the harm it was wrought to do on all those who do not give themselves over to Supay, Lord of Uku Pacha.

Wolves of Paris

In advance of Kay Pacha being completed, we plan to release a smaller game using the same ruleset. Wolves of Paris will fling you directly into the Napoleonic era, just as the French capital is ravaged by a series of savage and mysterious wolf attacks. Stay tuned to @kaypachagame on Twitter, and this page, for more details in the very near future.

Stretch Goals

Become a Burrido - £14,000

Fully fleshed out character creation rules for playable ‘burrido’ characters - the un-powered masses who make up around 80 percent of the Pizarran Empire. This brand new supplement will allow players that love a challenge to play a regular citizen, trying to make their mark in a world dominated by the superhuman

Kay Pacha Campaign - £18,000

A fleshed out, exhaustive and exciting campaign created by the game’s designers. This immersive storyline will take you across the entire continent, from the golden plains of Faldón to the towering spires of the Imperial Palace. This campaign will give new Kay Pacha players the perfect introduction to the immersive rules and fiction of the game, weaving major figures from the game’s fiction into a tale of high intrigue and explosive combat.

Risks and challenges

Time - Our plan is to launch Kay Pacha as a fully illustrated book. To achieve the level of quality that we have come to associate with Sophie's work, understandably, takes time. This is why we have set the completion target for August 2015, so that nobody is under false allusions about the time required between funding and shipping. We expect to deliver Wolves of Paris around twelve weeks after the end of this Kickstarter (early February).

Print quality - Nobody likes a flimsy feeling book, and to see the game we have worked on for nearly two years be printed on low-grade materials would be crushing for us personally. Kay Pacha will be printed on high quality paper, built to last through years of campaigns. We have already consulted a number of printers in order to make the most informed decisions about our printing stock and will be requesting preview copies of Kay Pacha before we commit to the final print run. In this way, we will ensure that the book arrives in the form we intended, from the words and images on the page to the very pages themselves.
