About this project
Refil is an activated charcoal filter and encasement that's designed to screw into disposable plastic bottles and remove the bleachy and metallic tastes from tap water.
We often found with the current filter bottles on the market that prolonged use made the bottle tacky, damaged, and often lead to leaking. We wanted to create a product that served a similar function, but with the ease of utilising the many pre loved plastic bottles we had previously bought from the supermarket.
Activated charcoal is well known within the alcohol and beverage industry, in which it has been used as a natural filtering element for decades.
And so, we've designed a filter that fits to the most common plastic bottles you can buy, giving you the option to switch up your filter between bottles and benefit from the 105 litre filtering capacity.
The activated charcoal we use is made from coconut shells.
Its made up of tiny pores and negatively charged ions, which work by adsorbing toxins and positively charged elements such as Lead, Copper, and Chlorine.
The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoal that spreads over a massive surface area. just 1 gram of activated charcoal has a surface area in excess of 500 m2 (about one tenth the size of a football field).
The huge surface area of activated charcoal means there are countless bonding sites for toxins. When certain toxins pass next to the charcoal surface they attach like a magnet leaving the water to pass through freely.
Based off the continuous consumption of bottled water, its highly likely someone in your household will have a preloved disposable plastic bottle lying around, making it super easy to convert any bottle into a reusable filtering water bottle.
Refil will screw onto 65% of any juice, water or carbonated drink bottles you'd find at a supermarket or convenience store.
We visited the five main supermarkets here in New Zealand and we found we could screw a filter on to 65% of the bottles you can buy off the shelf, which on a global metric could be thousands of different juice, soda and water beverage bottles that a Refil filter adapts to.

The option to keep reusing bottled water bottles means you are spending significantly less money on bottled water, and there's less waste which is less stress on our landfills.
70% of the worlds used bottles go to land fill, and it is our mission with Refil to provide initiatives that support the reduction of plastic beverage bottle consumption worldwide.
The costs for our first run of manufacturing has limited us to only one colour-way, however for our future plan is that we can provide heaps of colours so you can mix and match sipper caps and casings, fully personalising your bottles!
This aside, we do need help selecting a colour! We'll be running a survey closer to the end of the campaign to determine the best colour to go with.
Refil is a water filter company dedicated to improving the taste of tap water through element based science. Over the past 18 months, we've pored over water filtration and chemical attraction research, and studied about the effect carbon based filters have on removing impurities from tap water. From there, we set out to take our findings and make a product that could help everyone and equally benefit the environment, without disrupting our water drinking behaviour too dramatically. After much trial and error, we’ve arrived at a prototype that removes impurities and that people love, and we believe we can continue to improve and innovate reusable filter solutions.
Hi, I'm Johnny, Inventor and founder of the Refil Filter.
I reside in Wellington, New Zealand and have always had a weak taste for tap water; The bleachy after taste and odour you get from the chlorination treatment, the metallic aftertastes. The fact it gets worse after a down pour of rain, especially here in Wellington.
With a background in design it gave me the insight on how to problem solve an issue that was personal to me, something that was effecting me mentally and physically. I often found if I didn't have filtered or bottled water with me out and about or at home, I just wouldn't drink water. I'd wait to go to my part time office job to fill up using the water filter/cooler they had there, before I'd ever consider filling a bottle up from the tap. Naturally this lead to me drinking two, maybe three bottles of water a week if that. This certainly wasn't enough considering I was juggling university, rugby and work all at once.
I had used previous charcoal products before to filter water and my whole family have been using them for the past 5 years, and it made sense to investigate this material more and design it in a way to adapt it to the bottled water and beverage bottles we had purchase during the week.
My goal with Refil is to continue innovating new ways to filter water and to disrupt the bottle water industry, with a focus on wanting to encourage a circular economy, and to provide clean and safe drinking water all over the world.
Our trusted manufacturing partners have set minimum order quantities for manufacture to be cost effective. This is why we have set our funding goal to $50,000. By hitting this funding goal, we are able to achieve the minimum order quantity of our manufacturing partners and enable us to serve the exact customer demand. All we need is 3,330 people to believe in us and we can do this, please spread the word!
Refil only filters municiple tap water, and will not filter out microbiological contaminants in water. Generally if council water testing comes back positive for microbiological contaminants, they increase the chlorine amounts to ensure safe water potability. We recommend checking with your local council for information regarding the safety of your tap water.
Risks and challenges
We understand the requirements and finesse that goes into a crafted piece of design, and having spent countless hours perfecting the product we're confident it will be a seamless manufacturing process.
Our factory partners are ready to go with creating the tooling and to proceed with manufacturing and assembly.
We anticipate being able to fulfill orders within 8-12 weeks, however we should note that forecasting demand is an inexact science. If order volumes exceed our expectations, or there are manufacturing hiccups, it might take slightly longer to fulfill orders.
Please stay tuned to our campaign for updates around manufacturing and development!
