I'm very excited to share this new project with all of you. Ever since I recorded Johann Sebastian Bach's complete Sonatas and Partitas for Violin (with help from many of you), I knew that recording the cello suites would be the next step in my development as a musician. Having worked with incredible masters of various world music traditions, like Bela Fleck, Martin Hayes and Kayhan Kalhor, my playing of the Suites is equally inspired by folk and fiddling traditions, as it is by historically informed performance. If you have a moment to check out the video above, I think you will see what I mean.
The Cello Suites are in some ways even more iconic than the Sonatas and Partitas. In writing them, Bach captured every human emotion imaginable, making the compositions truly universal. These works are known and beloved all over the world, thanks to legendary recordings and performances by giants like Pablo Casals, Anner Bylsma and Yo-Yo Ma. The Suites have been performed on many instruments other than the cello: viola, bass, marimba, horn, banjo, mandolin come to mind; and yet somewhat surprisingly, until very recently they have never been performed or recorded on the violin. I am grateful to have an opportunity to share my take on the suites with all of you.
The process began a few months ago, when I spent a day at Oktaven studio, recording the first 3 suites. Here's a little video of the Allemande of the 1st Suite from that session:
You will notice something somewhat unusual for this day and age - tape reels! This is the first album I'm recording to tape, and I couldn't be more excited! One of the worries I had about doing this project was that recording the suites on the violin could make them sound thin and cold. I've been told that tape can add warmth and depth to audio recording. Here's another video from the first session, this is the Sarabande from the 2nd Suite. Judge for yourself.
In a few days I'm going back to record Suites 4, 5 and 6, and I am thrilled to be recording the 6th Suite on a 5-string violin, another first for me! I'll post a video update from the session soon.
With your help, the album will come out in early 2020. To celebrate the release of the album, I've booked a 10-city tour across the United States. I will be sharing the details of the tour very soon, and I would be thrilled to see you at one of the shows.
I thank you in advance for your support - this would not be possible without your help!
With love and sincere gratitude,
Risks and challenges
Having now done 3 kickstarter campaigns, I am well prepared to execute this project without any significant risks. Production of vinyl can sometimes take longer than expected, but I will do everything in my power to deliver all rewards on time. If I may ask for one favor, it would be for all of you to respond to reward surveys promptly. This will greatly help the smooth and timely delivery of the rewards. Thank you all!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
