The Moon and the Stars
The Moon and the Stars tells the story of a man who spends his life searching for fulfillment and happiness. After countless years of pursuing his true love, he realizes that he is miserable and alone. The love he thought was the answer to all his doubts and uncertainties, turned out to be the cause of his greatest sorrow.
With the end of his days drawing nearer and nearer, he starts his life over, leaving everything he once longed for. By setting out on his own, he discovers that what he was looking for all along was the simple song of the moon and the stars.
What is the new album going to be like?
In the last months of my life, I have been inspired by the perpetual motion of time. Days go by. Seasons change. Acquaintances and friends drift in and out of our lives, as the endless cycle of days and nights continues to turn.
When I began writing again, this idea of time and change became one of the central ideas that permeated the lyrical content and sonic spectrum. The next album will explore the idea of life, looking at the various seasons in which we find ourselves over the course of a lifetime. From the warm haze of childhood, to the bleak uncertainty of old age, this record explores the emotions we are faced with throughout our human lives.
The album will feature large, full-band arrangements, as well as soft, simple vignettes. Driven primarily by the guitar and piano, the new album also features percussion, strings, horns, and is peppered by mandolin and accordion.
How will my contribution be used?
Making a profesional quality record requires a lot of time, energy, and money. Major labels will often budget anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000 to create a full length album! To make my next record into a reality, I have taken a look at the various costs, and proposed a budget that allows us to make a professionally competitive album for as little money as possible. So, here are the costs that your generous support will help pay for:
The Studio: A professional recording studio is furnished with high end recording equipment, and designed for optimal acoustic performance. This creates a prefect setting to record the talented team of musicians I have assembled for this project. Without a studio space, we will be unable to capture the sound and energy of the band playing together in one environment. Studios are very expensive to record in, and this is one of the primary costs your contribution will cover.
The Musicians: Over the past several months, I have had the privilege of meeting and working with some incredible musicians. In the past, making an album meant playing all the instruments myself. But honestly, there are a lot of instruments that I have no business playing, because I am lousy at them. By funding this project, you are giving me the ability to pay my closest friends for their time and efforts, creating something we can all be proud of. These hardworking individuals pay their bills playing their instruments, and I could never ask them to donate so many long hours without compensation.
Mixing: Once all the songs have been recorded, the process of mixing the record begins. Mixing is the slow and delicate process of making sure that each song has a balanced and focused sound. Each instrument must be at the appropriate volume, and nothing should stick out or get lost in the mix. This process involves a lot of long hours at the studio, which plays a large role in the cost of the record as a whole.
Mastering: After the record is mixed, it goes through a final tune up before going to print. Mastering is the last stage of production, in which a record is combed thoroughly for any disturbances in the sonic texture. During this process, the sound of a record is also made cleaner and brighter, greatly improving the listening experience. Mastering is an expensive process, and requires the time and effort of a highly skilled engineer.Your contribution will help offset these costs.
Printing: The last expense that your contribution will help pay for is printing. This is the home stretch of the record making process, where the songs from the album will be pressed to CD and Vinyl. This is a very costly portion of making a record, and will take a large percentage of the budget.
When will I receive my rewards?
The rewards will be delivered upon the album's completion. While we have no strict timeline for finishing the record, we anticipate wrapping up recording by early spring, and shipping out the rewards as soon as the album is printed. Other rewards will occur during the record making process (studio sessions, house shows, etc. . .)
If there are ever any concerns or questions regarding your rewards, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
Recording an album is a tedious, lengthy, and difficult endeavor. However, I have succeeded in making two records so far, and anticipate no trouble in making a third come to life. The team that will be working on this album is highly gifted and I have no doubt that this new record will be something we can all be very proud of!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
