**************STRETCH GOALS ADDED! SEE BELOW FOR MORE DETAILS!************
Like most queer people growing up, I have stories from my days "IN THE CLOSET!" While I was born this way, it wasn't always easy to express who I was as a gay man. From a young age, I latched onto comics filled with superheroes, creepy storytellers and strange tropes that told tales of people who were alien and different, characters that people feared and hated. From this place was birthed, THE CLOSET OF SECRETS #1!
THE CLOSET OF SECRETS is a black and white anthology-style comic, filled with three tales of queer horror. It will be standard comic book size, with the book being printed at 6.7” x 10.2" with a color cover. Recommend for ages 13 and over as there are adult themes.
Join our narrator who goes by only the name "The Janitor”, as he cleans out his huge hallway of closets and dishes about some pretty interesting secrets found along the way. This mysterious figure weaves you through the first of, what I hope is, many issues of this ongoing series with tales titled:
"Departure with a Kiss" - Two young girls share their first kiss, but will it be the kiss of death for them?
"A Contract with God" - A devout man finds that some things you do or don't do on earth really do matter in the afterlife.
"Love Afterlife”, a tale about two young boys who find love after meeting a zombie who served in WWII.
Plus, extra content and bonus activity pages.
Inspirations for this series are very much old EC comics, Tales from the Crypt, Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Tales From the Dark Side, Haunted House and many, many more! I remember reading those tales and their portrayal’s of queer characters as stereotypical tropes - like the wife's hair dresser, who the husband kills because he is jealous and thinks they are lovers. I want to take stories like that and make the queer characters the protagonist and not always the victim. However, as it is horror, I can't promise that will always be the case!
Now for the budgeting. The money raised by this Kickstarter will be broken down in the approximate ways:
Printing of the THE CLOSET OF SECRETS #1 and other rewards $1230
Kickstarter Fees $200
Shipping and Handling $200
Any money raised over the Kickstarter Goal will be used to attend comic cons and art fairs to promote and sell more copies of THE CLOSET OF SECRETS #1 and ensure that we get a second issue.
$2500-The ability to order a larger number of books at a higher discount. It will also cover some of the costs associated to tabling at convention so that I can share this book with more people after the Kickstarter ends. If this goal is reached I will add a preview of "Moon Pack" a future CLOSET OF SECRETS story.
$4000-The creation of a website and the ability to attend cons more and larger comic conventions. If this goal is met I will add a "Fan Club" Package to each person who donated above the $10 level and selected to have something shipped to them.
I've been making comics and zines since 2009. Most of my work has been around my battle with cancer and comics that deal with narratives around medicine. Even in these early works, you can see my love for monsters and horror comics with the use of a "tumor monster" to represent the disease. Through this work, I’ve slowly started creating one-off tales that encompass more bizarre and supernatural themes. In 2015, I produced Astonishing Queer Tales, a group of zines that focused on horror, crime and bizarre stories that focused on the queer community. Some stories were based on facts, like the story of "The Doodler”, a real serial killer who was active in the 1970's and was never captured. Others were more far out stories like "Pocket Monster", about a night out in Brooklyn that that ends badly. These books were the precursor to this larger project that I'm so excited to share with you.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter so I'm sure there is something I have forgotten! But that said, I have worked on a lot of projects and feel that I am in a good place with this book. As the comic is in the final editing phase, I don’t foresee any risks. I just need your support to allow me to share this with the world!
With the release of this Kickstarter, the illustrations for the book are all complete and I'm in the final editing phase.
My main concern is shipping as I have heard nightmares about high shipping costs, both domestically and internationally and just not gathering the proper information from backers. But I have plans in place and will tackle each challenge as they come to make sure that backers are as satisfied and as excited about this project as I am.
