About

This new mini-series on the Trojan War will go through all the events of this central Greek myth - including the judgement of Paris, the wrath of Achilles, the Trojan horse and the sack of Troy! Narrated by Dr. Foxwede, a mad professor, the series draws on the Trojan epic cycle known to the Ancient Greeks, a canonical list of epic poems that, taken as a whole, recounted the entire Trojan War. In order we run through the Cypria, the lost prequel of the Iliad, to the Iliad in its 24 books, to the later missing epics too - the Aethiopis, the 'Little Iliad' and the 'Sack of Troy' (in Greek, called the Iliou Persis). By the end, the whole war will be sketched out in detail.

Unique to this series, we will also recite a few important lines of the original Greek in dactylic hexameter, to give a modern audience some indication of what it was like to hear the original epics. The overall 12-part series should run for some 70 minutes, but if the funding exceeds its target I will add bonus episodes! Given the infinite discussions on the Iliad and the Trojan War in general, this extra content can go on indefinitely, into quite detailed debates (e.g., how has the Iliad text survived? Did its traditional author Homer actually exist? ... what was going on between Achilles and Patroclus?). To give you an idea of the main content, I have already uploaded Episodes I and II of the War.

This series is all the work of one guy (me, John), so it's quite time-consuming to put this all together! First I do the research, by reading book chapters and articles, then I translate Greek passages and scan their metre for reciting; then I write the scripts,  record the dialogue, and draw by hand a library of illustrations that I scan and digitally ink. The process finishes with editing and the final upload to YouTube.

I am not paying any staff, so all these funds would go directly to myself, to support every stage of this project. As I am dedicating myself to general academic research and this series, I am not currently employed, and I live on a rather precarious student budget; some extra funds for my living expenses - and books to improve the research for this series! - would be most welcome.

Risks and challenges

I will try to upload a new episode on at least a fortnightly basis. By next year (2020), I will be more busy with post-graduate work but as I will not be further employed, this shouldn't interfere with my uploading schedule too much.
