Good Spirits follows Prost, a newly hired bartender acting as an apprentice at the legendary Jade Mug; a tavern of infamy and renown, known for housing only the finest ales and spirits in the land. Prost longs to make something of himself and aims to do so by pursuing the art of crafting his own spirits from an old moonshine still he recently discovered.
The story begins on one of the most important days in the Jade Mug's history, the next Passing of the Mug, when the tavern's current owner retires and hands the bar over to the next. On top of that, the Jade Mug is also hosting a prestigious competition that crowns the best drink in the city; an award that can spell success or disaster for all those that enter.
The high pressure night takes an unexpected turn when Prost encounters a practitioner of the Black Magicks and narrowly escapes with his life. The encounter leaves Prost confused and terrified, but more importantly, leaves the Passing of the Mug, the drink contest, and the fate of the entire Jade Mug in jeopardy.
The heart and soul of Good Spirits is the characters. Their ambitions, fears, virtues, and vices are what drive and force the story forward.
Prost was recently hired as an apprentice bartender at the Jade Mug and is eager to prove himself. He sees being at the Jade Mug as a real opportunity to learn and become better at his true passion, crafting and distilling fine spirits. He has also come to think of the Jade Mug as a home. He feels comfortable there and genuinely enjoys his work. His coworkers feel like family and his patrons feel like friends.
Ness is a wizard. She is not a witch or a warlock or a sorceress or enchanter. She is a wizard and she will be referred to as such because she has earned that right. She demands respect at all times and as a result can come off as harsh and standoffish, but, as we learn more about her, we begin to wonder if she is more like Prost than either of them notice.
The Staff of the Jade Mug also play a large role in the story. They are the crew that keeps the most famous bar in the city running every night and maintain a strict standard of excellence despite having more work to do that any crew of their size should be able to handle.
June is the Jade Mug's current owner; set to retire after over thirty years of keeping the place standing. The many years of hard work seem to have done her well, however, as she remains as bright and pleasant as the day she took over. As she prepares to leave for new adventures she does so with a smile on her face as she has the utmost faith in her successor, Hayble.
Hayble is a tough man that feels prepared to take on the task of running the Jade Mug. He has apprenticed under June for many years and is eager for his turn to be in charge. He is not a fan of small talk and is often very direct, resulting in many people seeing him as a short tempered and somewhat rude person.
Keyrun and Caillie are directly under June and Hayble in the Jade Mug's seniority. Keyrun is the head bartender for the Jade Mug while Caillie is the head server. While June and Hayble chart out the overall course for the Jade Mug it is Keyrun and Caillie that are responsible for seeing that plan put into action.
Oh, they are also deeply in love. While a high pressure environment like the Jade Mug may seem tailor made to tear a loving relationship apart Keyrun and Caillie seem to have found a way to thrive under the pressure. They are at their best when the Jade Mug is seemingly falling to pieces and always manage to find a way to keep things together.
Lailia is a talented bard that often performs at the Jade Mug. When not travelling the world in search of inspiration Lailia can be found either preparing a new ballad or courting a new love, usually within the walls of the Jade Mug, and usually both at the same time.
This Kickstarter project was started with the intention of funding the creation of Good Spirits. The final product of Good Spirits will be a graphic novel printed in paperback form measuring approximately 5x7.5 inches and running approximately 100 pages in length. The covers of the book will be full colour with black and white interior pages.
Our date for delivery is May of 2017. We are aiming to finish by April 2017 and delivery by May for several reasons, chief among them being the start of the comic convention season for that year.
Our fundraising goal is $7500 and is broken down as follows:
Good Spirits is being written by Joey Donaldson and illustrated by Rachel Petrovicz. This is their second time working together, following the short comic "The Builder" from the Find The Sky comic anthology. Rachel and Joey first worked together on the comic in 2014 and have been looking forward to working together again ever since.
Joey Donaldson is a writer based out of the Toronto suburbs; "Burlington" for those in the know. His previous comics include Failed Oasis, a sci-fi adventure story about a group of teenagers trapped in a Mad-Max-style wasteland, and the above mentioned Find the Sky, a coming of age story following the adventures of Lottie, a young nomadic wild child, and her travelling companion Bloom, a bison.
Joey has written various short for comics in the past but is intent on completing a full graphic novel. Good Spirits is his first attempt as completing this goal.
Feel free to ask Joey and questions in the comment section here or on Twitter @Joetown17.
Her style manages to walk a perfectly line between playful and dramatic while never failing to capture a scenes dramatic intent or capability. Rachel is also available on Twitter @TunaYo.

Jade Mug Short Story
If you're interested in knowing more about the history of the Jade Mug then this tier is for you! This short story will be penned by Joey Donaldson and shed some light on how the Jade Mug was founded, how it grew to be such a famous location, and where it's namesake, the actual Jade Mug, came from!
Cocktail Recipe Prints
The fourth tier is both beautiful and tasty! At $40 you will receive some beautiful prints featuring both Rachel's art and some delicious cocktail recipes! Break them out and give bar tending a try at home! You may not have all the ingredients on hand, like fresh limes, sugar cubes, or Unicorn hair, but we trust you'll make due!
Click on the picture above to check out the tempting and terrifying Thalassophobia. As the Kickstarter campaign rolls on we'll be revealing the rest of the prints. Look forward to them in the upcoming updates!
Joey's Terrible Art
Sometimes when a writer works with an artist they will draw small page layouts to better relay their intentions in a scene. Sometimes these drawings will be terrible. Usually these drawings are hidden away from the world in fear of the shame they will bring upon everyone involved with them.
Sometimes they are offered as Kickstarter rewards. For even more money than the actual finished product.
As Joey and Rachel work together to bring Good Spirits to life Joey will essentially be creating his own version of the book alongside Rachel in order to help the process along. This reward tier gets you that terrible, terrible version; the entirety of Good Spirits drawn by Joey. It will be terrible. It will be awful. Joey's version, that is. Rachel's will be great.
If you can't get enough comics then this tier is for you. At $75 you will receive an assortment of previous works. Limited availability as we're running pretty low on some of these books!
You will receive a printed copy of Failed Oasis #1 by Joey Donaldson and Patibut Preeyawongsakul, "The Builder" a Find the Sky story by Joey and Rachel, and "The Question" a Find the Sky story by Joey and Juanito Medina.
Appear In The Book, Step Up and Order!
This tier gets your beautiful face in the book. The Jade Mug is the most popular place in the whole city, hundreds of folk come through on any given night to unwind and kick back. You can be one of those fine people!
If you select the $150 tier we'll need a photo of you, or whomever you choose, and Rachel will find a place for you inside the bar. We'll be sure to let you know which page you're on and where you are, if you like! Or we can leave it a mystery and let your Where's Waldo yourself while you read.
At the $250 tier not only will you be one of the lucky few that finds their way into the Jade Mug, you'll get some one on one time with the crew to order a drink. We'll take the time to chat with you and see to it that you order something you're into. Maybe the dark and dangerous Thalassophobia cocktail, or perhaps a nice tall ale from Bristleberry Brews? Whatever drink of the Jade Mug's menu strikes your fancy, you can have it. Provided you don't run a foul of Hayble while you're in there!
THE JADE MUG
The $1000 tier will get you the one, the real, the true and fabled JADE MUG. Legends say that the Jade Mug has the power to awaken the true hidden taste of any beverage placed within it; that drinking from it is enough to change anyone for the rest of their days.
A hand crafted, one of a kind, replica of the the Jade Mug. There's only one of these in the story, and so there will only be one of these in the real world. One person can have this, and only one. Cheers!
Risks and challenges
Since Rachel and I have worked together in the past we have a good understanding of each others habits. I think the biggest risk in this project would be delivering on time, but to be honest, we set the delivery date as May of 2017 because we feel that date is more than doable. If our funding goal is met that would give Rachel a complete six months to finish the art of the book, which would be more than enough time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
