The pen by which ideas become real.
Marks on paper are more than the sum of their parts. They grow exponentially through the hands of thinkers around the world—designers, writers, illustrators, entrepreneurs, musicians, and the like—into fantastic creations. Entire buildings are begun with marks on paper, books are written, symphonies are composed, paintings are sketched, products are diagrammed. A pen allows your imagination to bloom.
We at Baron Fig have a singular mission: To champion thinkers in their journey to create and inspire the world. We take this responsibility to heart. Two years ago we launched our first Kickstarter for the Confidant notebook. Since then we've shipped tens of thousands around the world.
Now we're back to provide the other half of the equation. Every notebook needs a sword by which thoughts cut sharp, the tool of ideation: a well-designed pen.
As a tool, usability is paramount. Which is why we aimed to design a pen that would be comfortable to use all day, no matter where you are.
As you may have already noticed, a lot of what we previously learned about notebooks is applicable to pens. This is because the pen and notebook are married so intimately in use. It was this thinking that helped us create the Confidant notebook, and now the Squire pen.
The first step in smart design is defining the problem at hand. In this case, the challenge was to create a pen that fosters your process by making writing easier and more enjoyable. We came to the conclusion that a pen is a means to something greater than itself.
Using this understanding as a guide we began to break down the individual subtleties that comprise the whole, and improve the design in a myriad of ways. After significant testing we landed on a length that's shorter than the average pen but longer than the average pocket pen, allowing you to comfortably use the Squire at home, work, or on-the-go. There are no gimmicks, no unnecessary parts—just intelligent improvements to a simple tool.
Each Squire comes with a customized ink refill with "The Pen is a Mighty Sword" emblazoned on the barrel. The Squire is refillable using Parker-style capless rollerball refills. You can purchase them directly through Baron Fig, or find them at your local stationery store. It comes with one 0.6mm black refill installed and ready to write.
We started designing this pen over fourteen months ago. During this time we had dozens of dialogues with artists, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, illustrators, and other thinkers around the world. All the hours of research, testing, and discussion have helped us distill the qualities that make a tool conscious enough to help the creative process and simple enough so that it doesn’t get in your way.
The Squire is a fusion of creativity and expert engineering.
Smart design is crucial when it comes to the subtleties of a simple item. We've carefully considered every detail to create a great tool for exploration. This is what brings the pen to life.
Like our notebooks, we make a point to get out of your way. The pen is ultra minimal, with as few parts and edges as possible. The Squire is a fusion of creativity and expert engineering, fueled by the community—by people like you.
Get your pens before anyone else.
Our backers will be the first to receive Squire pens. They also get a special reduced rate. Check out the rewards below and make your selection on the right, or by clicking "Back This Project." Keep in mind you can pledge as little as $1 or as much as you like—every bit helps.
Our project is based on simplicity, and in keeping with that spirit the rewards are all centered around the Squire pen. You have the choice of getting up to three Squires, and for every tier there's a combo that includes Limited Edition Backer Confidants. This edition will be available solely through the Kickstarter campaign (ever). We believe in the products we make, and have worked on perfecting every subtlety to make tools you can use and love.
As always, everything we create is a continued work in progress. We have open channels to easily connect with you, the very first Squire users. This includes our website, email, twitter, and facebook. We actively listen, respond, and refine our products. You're part of the process, we're excited to see where we take this—together.

How Kickstarter works.
The following is taken from Kickstarter's info page.
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.
Thousands of creative projects are funding on Kickstarter at any given moment. Each project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. The filmmakers, musicians, artists, and designers you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects. They spend weeks building their project pages, shooting their videos, and brainstorming what rewards to offer backers. When they're ready, creators launch their project and share it with their community.
Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.
Backing a project is more than just giving someone money, it's supporting their dream to create something that they want to see exist in the world.
Risks and challenges
Manufacturing a product is a monumental feat. Every element is made by a different group of specialists; then we have to arrange for each of these elements to arrive at a manufacturer who then puts all the pieces together. Essentially, it's a task that involves a lot of scheduling, preparation, and care.
Our greatest challenge is to organize these elements for mass production. The different elements include (but are not limited to): pen body, movement mechanism, ink cartridge, quality control, packaging, shipment packaging, and shipping.
Once the elements are produced we will have them delivered to us in New York City where we will ship them to our backers all over the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
