"Process into Permanence" comes out of literally thousands of requests each year I receive to make things that people can hang on their walls, or somehow keep as a physical object.
With this Project I will create a minimum of 12 finished permanent artworks and showcase them at my own expense at a venue TBD in NYC in the Spring/Early Summer 2015
With additional funds beyond my goal, I will embark on a world tour of sorts, selecting cities to perform live sand paintings at select venues alternating between domestic and international destinations as funds allow.
Since 2009 I have created over 800 spontaneous designs made from colored sand. I pour it directly from my hands using colors and shapes in an improvisational technique, over the course of a day to create a single, temporary sand painting that measures between 15-25ft, usually in the public parks of New York City.
Many of you are familiar with my work. Check out this cool video to see the process.
Billions of grains of sand are dispersed in a colorful design throughout the day, then swept up that night.
I have been making these types of designs for over 20 years using all different types of materials. I have used computer parts, auto parts, flowers, seeds, berries, food and even fire. What's unique in the experience of making this art is that I learn through the process and want to share it widely. I want to make objects that people can have a relationship with, contemplate, and find a greater depth by living with the art.
As an artist my mind is filled with possibilities of what can be created beyond these beautiful 2-dimensional designs that are swept away each night.
…and thats where you come in…
For this reason, I would greatly appreciate your support to bring these ideas to life, to support my studio practice throughout the winter and allow my creative juice to flow into a whole new and different body of work that fosters experimentation and pushing the boundaries.
My goal for this project is to create a minimum of 12 new finished paintings at least 48” x 48” by May 2015 and to prepare an exhibit for Spring/Summer 2015 of these new works in at a location TBD.
Additionally, a large scale painting will be created specifically for the purpose of being cut up and dispersed proportionally among this project’s backers…..and you can own a piece!*
*backers who choose a “Magic Carpet” reward level are sponsors of a fractional portion of the larger "Magic Carpet"
Heres an example of a recent painting utilizing my sand on carpet technique.
That’s correct! As a supporting backer you can choose to own a piece of this process.
I will make a massive painting using the technique I have developed fixing colored sand onto carpet. For those who choose, I will cut up the portions of this painting and reward sections of 3”x 3”, 6” x 6”, 9” x 9”, 12” x 12” and so on….. you can capture as large of a piece as you like of this painting or buy a larger complete stand alone work 48” x 48” or even larger to support my journey this winter.
What will the money be used for?
I'm asking for your help contribute to paying for loads of sand, rolls of carpet, finishes, ways to stretch and hang the art and all the costs associated with presenting the art at a venue including invites, refreshments and keeping the lights on.
In return, you can buy, by the inch or foot, pieces of the "Magic Carpet" I will create just for backers. This is probably the most affordable way to get one of my original works of art. Plus, I'll have a backers-only blog so you can get updates, video clips and snaps from the process. For backers at the thousand dollar level or more, come meet me in the studio, discuss the art, have some lunch, drinks and see the process in action.
The idea being that your generous backing provides the support I need to make bigger and more fantastic art in the studio and pursuing things that require the same focus and dedication as I have given to my temporary works for over 5 years.
By purchasing the various postcards, books, prints, and artifacts or by hiring my services to come to your town for a weekend to create a live painting or give a talk, it supports the further creation of my unique ART...and isn't that COOL!
Why cut up a Painting?
By cutting up the “Magic Carpet” painting it acts as a unique metaphor. It brings a piece of the magic into your home and virtually connects you to other backers. Just as my temporary paintings disperse in the wind, this painting will disperse around the globe, but will continue to be a part of your life, something to reflect on and see new everyday.
“We love seeing your paintings online... can you come to our city and create a sand painting?”
Yes! Absolutely! In fact, I’m building in stretch goals to this project which are detailed below. For specified amounts above and beyond the $20,000 goal, I will come to your city and create a temporary painting in a sponsored venue (School, University, Art Gallery, Community Center or Museum) . I will go to any city around the world if a backer or group of backers collectively meet the requirements for a commissioned work and choose the “Have Sand Will Travel” reward level. Scheduling and the venue will have to be determined but will be fulfilled in 2015, coming to a city near you! If you have any questions about this reward, please don't hesitate to contact me.
I want to bring my work to you! Even if nobody chooses "Have Sand Will Travel" If I go beyond my funding goals by the required amount, I will choose a city, organize a venue and to that city to create my art!
Stretch goals are ways that I can give even more to my audience in exchange for the generosity they bring.
The concept for the stretch goals is to bring a live performance of a sand painting and give an informative talk about my work to local communities around the United States and the World.
The following is a rough outline of what each of these live performances includes and the logistics involved:
- Transportation for myself and assistant to location
- Accommodation locally for up to 3 nights
- Ground transportation for duration of stay
- All meals
- Documentation of the sand-paintings creation with stills and video
- an informal or formal presentation of the concepts in the work
Host cities will be determined in three ways:
- Availability of a suitable indoor venue to host a 20’ painting
- Concentration of backers in a particular area.
- Claiming the “Have Sand Will Travel” reward with a logistical plan to bring the art to your city will secure your city on a first come first serve basis and will Guarantee appearance in 2015.

Any funding beyond these stretch goals will be handled in a similar way to alternate international venues and spots around the globe as fairly as I can.
These stretch goals will be carried out in 2015 and are intended to bring the personal experience to locations around the world through a crowd funded platform. Scheduling is subject to availability and Joe retains the right of refusal to travel to any particular destination.
Risks and challenges
I feel very confident in my ability to produce the work, and prepare it for exhibition.
Challenges include finding an appropriate and affordable venue to hang the artwork and leave it up for a time so that many people can enjoy it.
To address this I have left flexibility in the scheduling of the exhibit to accommodate any unforeseen challenges in acquiring a venue so that the proper publicity and other production issues have plenty of time to breathe and settle without a harsh deadline to adhere to.
Although I prefer the exhibit to be located in Manhattan, affordability could become a determining factor, in which case alternative venues will be explored in Brooklyn or other locales. If you have access or would like to host an art exhibit in Manhattan for my work, I am open to discussing the details.
Other challenges may arise if the campaign is so successful that there is too many physical objects to deliver in the holiday season. Unforeseen printing or production delays for prints etc. that may be out of my control if the sheer volume gets to be too much.
I intend to monitor the campaign and plan appropriately to meet the holiday deliverables as best as humanly possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
