Migration is now officially EU Friendly. I will be conducting EU fulfillment through Ship Naked who have a facility in the UK.

By the hundreds, creatures are emigrating from the Old World in search of hope and prosperity. The New World offers endless opportunity, but only to those who arrive first. In this clever game, players seek out territories to conquer and compete for the most fertile properties, making critical decisions to gain the advantage.

Migration is a land-grabbing game in which players play unique pieces on a board in order to claim territory. Each piece is treated differently, ignores certain rules or creates new conditions according to its type. Players continue to settle in regions while remaining careful to not upset opponents, walk into traps or restrict one's own growth options.

"If you play with people who like quick and intense games with lots of simple but important decisions, then by all means pick up a copy of this game... It's tons of fun." -JT, co-founder of The Game Crafter

This is the same video as above.

The full live Migration Rules Document is here.

It seems simple enough, and it is, but there's a real depth to each decision and no two games play the same. At the beginning of each game, each player selects their own team of 12 pieces out of 30, carefully choosing abilities that work well together and counter the opponent's anticipated strategy. The map is then constructed from land plates (which takes less than a minute) and the adventure begins. With hundreds of thousands of possible team combinations, and millions (seriously) of possible maps, Migration is a nearly endless game.

The rules of Migration are learned very quickly, but mastered over time. They are designed to be understood by young children (kids as young as 4 have played successfully) and to open a wide variety of meaningful options without imposing analysis paralysis (kids as old as 60 have begged me to play it).

Above is the game Matt Jones and I created with the components available from The Game Crafter. In the Kickstarter version of Migration, we will be responding to the desires of the Migration community to improve the game dramatically. We are working closely with our manufacturer QPC to include 6 more unique explorers, twice as many game pieces, a modular board with limitless potential, and a more compact, thematic box.

The game will include 120 WOODEN explorer pieces, reminder image cards for basic gameplay and for each explorer (11+ explorers), 7 double-sided high-quality punchboard land plates for constructing the board, 8 terrain modifiers to further customize, 4 pioneer spirit tokens, and 2 game manuals, illustrating both basic and advanced play.

As voted by our fan base, the final explorers will resemble the style of these examples. Those Explorers will be screen-printed on wooden tokens and feature the detailed artwork of Matt Jones.

The box will open like a book and fasten with a magnet, enhancing Migration's storytelling theme. Its dimensions were designed to fit inside the USPS Small Flat Rate Box in order to save you money on shipping. This snug fit also makes Migration very portable.

The Red Box is a Kickstarter Exclusive Collectible Box. Any boxes not ordered through Kickstarter will be the Brown Box. Both of these are works in progress. UPDATE: It is possible to chose either box for your order. It is also possible to get a mix of boxes for a multiple order.

This artwork is a draft of what the island plates would look like on the punch board. These plates would get punched out and separated to later construct the board. Some of those smaller islands would become terrain modifiers, further customizing the board. Three such double-sided punch boards would come with the game.

Migration represents over a year of dedicated work and our first step into professional game development. Matt and I have spent hundreds of hours brainstorming, drafting, illustrating, play-testing and heading back to the drawing board to get this game to you.

The concept began as a curiosity. As a game designer, I draft prototypes for many, many games, but Migration was unique in its cohesion, modularity and replayability:

It had to be made.

I found The Game Crafter, an American small-scale game production company and employed my college roommate Matt Jones to complete the artwork. I could afford to pay him much less than he is worth, but we decided to risk this project together.

Only a few months after the January launch, Migration became one of the best-selling board games in The Game Crafter history, earning a Staff Pick, a 4.8 (out of 5) star rating and an endorsement from Father Geek.

“Highly stylized, exceedingly professional, and wonderfully thematic ... What’s bigger than fantastic? Ubertastic?... Migration has 'WIN' written all over it.” -Father Geek

Following through on my promise to expand Migration, I began working on more characters and environments soon after its original launch. Hundreds of play-testing hours later, I'm certain of their perfection. This time, however, Migration is ready for the big-leagues. I've reached out to QPC to print a huge number of games provided I am able to raise the funds.

I've selected Kickstarter for the rest. Without Kickstarter, we won't have the funding to order a print run. So we've come to rely on our devoted community and the curiosity and support of strangers to make Migration a reality.

After years of toil, I am proud to present Migration to the world. I hope you love it as much as I do!

"The art ... doesn't so much grab your attention, as punch it, take its wallet, and bundle it into its car. I love it." - fan

There is no doubt that Migration would be incomplete without the fantastic artwork of Matt Jones. Matt's illustrations bring to life the creatures and stories of our world.

Your purchase helps him put the finishing touches on his work.

The Sparrow is a proud and proper  military gentleman who should not be underestimated. He has a deep respect for the rules and insists that his neighbors observe his personal boundaries. Though he is not quick to anger, if he finds that he is not heeded, he will fly over and let you know exactly how he feels.

The Sparrow may Migrate over established Towns.

The fly is a curious fellow with, some might hint at, vulgar tastes, though it would be impolite to say so. He lives off the scraps of others and doesn't mind solitude. Despite his peculiar preferences, he is a valuable member of society and should not be ignored. This off-putting gentleman is able to develop towns in places that others would find repulsive.

The Fly may establish Towns on Wasteland.

The Oak is a wise old sage. He has seen fortunes rise and crumble, nations flourish and fall. This antiquated arborian has little interest in the frenzied expansion displayed by the other explorers, but he thinks he had better come along in case anybody needs a good story told. When people feel lost or run out of ideas, they always come back to the Oak to start anew. Some days he wishes they would stick around, but he doesn't let it spoil his day.

At the beginning of your turn, you may move your Pioneer Spirit to your established Oak.

The Bass is a fellow who is hard to pin down. He has no interest in the laws and customs of the land dwellers, though he is happy to make a profit off them. Like a good sailor, he prefers the open sea with its crisp winds and endless quiet. That isn't to say he wouldn't accept some nice company if someone were to offer.

You may establish a Bass on any coastal region without needing a Pioneer Spirit.

The rats are a kindly young couple, though they've grown old fast through a lifetime of hard work. They might not feel like they have much to contribute to all these adventurous types, but their virtue and general goodwill don't go unnoticed. After all, someone has to plow the fields or the citizens won't get their lovely cabbages and onions.

At the end of the game, Rats are worth two points.

The below artwork is for the expansion which will come bundled with the original game at all pledge levels. Though the illustrations are beautiful, they still need a few finishing touches before they can be called complete.

Vicious and snarling, the wolf hides in the shadows waiting for his prey to approach. Seeming to appear from nowhere, he employs pack tactics to take down those foolish enough to encroach on his territory.

The Wolf may establish towns on a Forest Region without needing a Pioneer Spirit. At the end of your turn, if two of your Wolves are adjacent to any enemy piece, flip that piece to its Wasteland side.

Twitching about the desert, the lizard knows what is under every rock and bush. He is difficult to find, but when he appears he offers shortcuts and wisdom to guide travelers.

You may choose to establish your Lizard Town as a Wasteland. If you do, you may take another turn with that wasteland as your only Pioneer Spirit.

The Jackal is a cunning and independent nomad of the desert. Accustomed to surviving on little, she thrives in lands that others would pass by.

The Jackal is worth a number of points equal to the number of Wasteland Regions adjacent to her.

Poison Oak is the beauty of the New World. Creatures travel for miles just to see her. She doesn't mind company and, let's be honest, they don't mind her.

At the end of each of your turns, remove all enemy Pioneer Spirits in regions adjacent to Poison Oak.

Surly and burly, the cactus is doing just fine on his own, thank you very much. He doesn't need friends, or even enemies. This prickly pickle just wants some space. And some quiet. And maybe some lemonade.

When you establish a town with your Cactus, do not move your Pioneer Spirit to it. All towns adjacent to the Cactus are worth one less point.

The skunk doesn't have a lot of experience making friends. Sometimes he's too shy even to talk to his stuffed acquaintances. Tonight he's traveling around looking for some company, but there's none to be found. Perhaps everyone else is just as timid.

As long as the Skunk has your Pioneer Spirit, enemies may not establish towns in adjacent regions.

Cloth Map

Our first add-on is available to all backers $34 and up, though backers at the $99, $500 and $1000 level get it for free. To enhance the nautical theme of Migration, I will have linen ocean maps printed. Backers who increase their pledge by $10 will have this Kickstarter Exclusive added to their order. During play, this map is used to help align the island plates and provide an attractive backdrop. The map will be printed on linen and treated for protection. It will have the Migration logo and the Hexagonal Compass from Book I.

Buyers of two copies can have two maps for $18, while buyers of 6 can have that many for $40.

Stickers

Our second add-on is also available only to backers at the $34 level and up, though backers at the $99, $500 and $1000 level get it for free. As you know, The Migration Tokens will feature screen-printed symbols for ease of play and recognition. Some backers have expressed an interest in having the illustrations available as stickers as they were in the TGC version of Migration. Because this represents an increase in cost and the minority opinion, I have decided to make those stickers available as an Add-On.

In order to facilitate ease of recognition, which was a reported problem of the TGC version, The illustrations have been modified to highlight the portrait. Here is a sample.

The background colors will match the color of the team and help the illustration pop. In order to add these 120 high resolution 1" stickers to your game, simply add $10 to your pledge.

Buyers of two copies can have two sets of stickers for $18, while buyers of 6 can have that many for $40.

There is no extra shipping charge for EU or International backers who want to include Add-ons.

$15k FUNDED!
Everyone gets exactly what they have ordered with plenty of polite customer service (courtesy of yours truly) all day long.

$20k Wooden Pieces UNLOCKED!
It's true! A combination of fixing those shipping issues and working some things out with QPC has made this possible at a much lower price than before. I now think that wooden pieces are truly within our reach! It's hard to express how excited I am about this, because this is how I dreamed the game would be produced :D

$25k Expanded Game Options UNLOCKED!
It's hard to be specific about this because it will require a lot of playtesting. I will include at least 3 new play modes in the manual which are designed to elongate the fun-factor of Migration for experienced and advanced players. My goal is to perfect a set of rules for a draft-style of play, a balanced random ban, and other limited formats.

At this level, I will also include a series of Age cards which are used to introduce an element of randomness for casual or varied play. These Age cards will be drawn at the beginning of each round and impose a new rule or grant a new ability that is universally applied to all players during that round. These would include cards like "Age of Bloody War," possibly allowing players to establish Towns on other Towns for that round. I have also mentioned "Age of Harsh Winters," and "Age of Low Tides" in the comments. My aim would be to include about 15 so that not every one comes out each game and there is sufficient variety.

$30k A New Explorer Approaches
As we approach this level, I will be heavily playtesting and critically selecting 3 Explorers that fit the theme and tactical environment of Books I and II. I will release their early PnP information so that players can get a taste of who they are. At $30k, I will allow all backers to vote on which Explorer is preferred and include that one in the game.
I will only be able to release one at this level because the art and character development involves a huge investment of the limited time of my artist.

Matt and I met in college and immediately recognized each other's talents. We have dreamed for years of working on a project like this. Though the fates have conspired to keep us apart, the internets have allowed us to come together to bring Migration to you.

Joe Cannon Game Designer, Writer, Special Educator

I got into designing games when I realized that so many of the big lessons I learned as a kid came from my gaming experience. My vocabulary, critical thinking, adaptation, creative problem-solving, spatial reasoning and much more came from hours in front of my favorite board games.

By playing these games, I was unknowingly priming my mind to succeed in many scenarios. I also spent many hours in front of meaningless games that promote addiction and lack substance. As a designer, writer and teacher, I strive to pursue games as a storytelling and learning medium. Games can divert, but they can also build community, develop perspective, enhance creativity and deliver those cherished aha! moments. After all, people already like games. Let's make them mean something.

Fans asked for proof of "Eye Candy" status, so here.

Matt Jones is the artist and graphic designer for Migration. Matt earned his Bachelor's in Fine Arts and did some further study in the Atelier schools. He likes to draw people, robots, and animals engaged in various acts of adventurous battle or battlesome adventure, and is working on an original space comic. He spends most of his time building custom hardwood guitar gear, prop sci-fi and fantasy weapons, and interior furnishings in his hometown of San Diego.

Matt hates it when people describe themselves in the third person and sincerely hopes that you've enjoyed the preceding exception.

The future of Migration depends entirely on the community supporting it. After Book 1 came out, the community played it, loved it, and stayed in touch with us, encouraging us to create more content to enjoy. If history repeats itself, then we will have no choice but to make Migration even awesomer (it's a word).

A successful Kickstarter also means that we will have more resources to work with for future projects, allowing us to purchase better materials and equipment, while better justifying our time. The more we exceed our goals here, the more quickly games will be coming out in the future.

We would love to extend our thanks to the entire Migration community. Our friends, family and fans have been so supportive over this year. We have enjoyed all the likes, calls, play-testing parties and experienced advice. There's no way we could communicate just how grateful we are for the amount of encouragement you all have given us.

Risks and challenges

This project is a challenge. It is a huge endeavor and my first such project. Fortunately, I have many talented friends, family and volunteers who are eager to ensure that the dream of Migration is realized. Furthermore, I have been working closely with my manufacturer QPC and my fulfillment company Ship Naked, both of whom are well-versed in what it takes to run a project like this. I have been voraciously studying Stonemaier's guide to completing a successful Kickstarter project and have adopted most of his suggestions. My backers know I am an open book and always eager to hear suggestions from those more experienced.
All the work is done or nearly done. All the production is ready to go and the shipping is lined up. I am devoted to seeing this project through.
