Yucatan is a one-of-a-kind racing game where you explore a stunning lo-poly Mexican-themed world. Collect incredible powerups, unlock new areas, and race against the clock.

You drive, you drive and you drive some more. Can The Car ever be satisfied? It eats up The Road as fast as it can, but this Road eats back. This Road will chew up The Car, and spit it fat out into space.
Yucatan takes inspiration from racers like Trackmania, Crazy Taxi and Distance. It’s a single player, challenge-based game: you against the clock, and the track. You collect new abilities and use them to discover new areas. Each area introduces new obstacles, road types and more abilities to unlock.
The game is named after the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, and draws inspiration from modern Mexican design, as well as ancient Mayan mythology.

You start with nothing but your drive. Go fast, drift wide, hit boosts and dodge bombs, that’s the name of the game. But along your journey you can pick up several abilities.
A flame-jet boost, powered by rocket-fuel and dividends from the sale of your soul. This can give a welcome jolt of speed and a change of direction in the air too. It has strange effects on some of the tracks.
Throw these ever-renewing bombs, for a blast, for kicks, for destruction. Knock down walls that block your path, blow obstacles off the track and even blast the car in new directions. Strange energies inside these bombs can open magic gateways. It is said that they are the purest way to defeat a concentrated ancient evil.
In the dangerous world of Yucatan you may need protection. You can’t outrun everything, though you can try. Transform the car with a mirror shield to deflect explosions, lasers and many other dangers. The shield harms your maneuverability though, and makes the car heavier.
The lo-poly art brings back the classic era of arcade racers, games like Ridge Racer, F-Zero and Crazy Taxi, combined with modern handling and a fresh Mexican vibe, it’s a style which is out of town.
The art is the responsibility of the legendary Ethan Redd, lo-poly supremo behind games such as Radd Road Rally, NE_01 and the upcoming Blazing Legion. There are a series of limited edition t-shirts featuring Ethan’s art, which are available as rewards on the right.
The story for the game is based on the legend of the Dwarf of Uxmal. It’s a Mayan myth about a dwarf who hatches from a snake egg and is raised by a witch as her child. When he has grown he challenges the king of Uxmal to become the new king, after he is tricked by his mother into doing so. The dwarf must then undertake several challenges set by the king, and with the help of the witch’s magic he completes the challenges and defeats the king to take his place as the ruler of Uxmal.
Yucatan is set thousands of years in the future, and wonders what might have happened to an immortal, magic-fuelled dwarf-king, after years of floating through space. Yes, it is a racing game, I haven’t forgotten.
The soundtrack to Yucatan will be a mix of UK punk and grunge and Mexican surf rock. We already have Thee MVPs and The Castillians on board; you can check out their tracks in the demo. Between now and release we will be putting together a one-of-a-kind soundtrack filled with the hardest-hitting undercover gems.
This is the first game by Hairy Heart games, with help from a small team of international collaborators.
I’m Joe, the programmer, game designer, and general main-man on Yucatan. I’ve been working on the game for the last 3 and-a-half years since dreaming it up on a stormy night in 2015.
By day I am a freelance Unity developer and I’ve worked on games such as Pool Panic for Adult Swim / REKIM and Lambchild Superstar for OKGo. I’ve been making games in my spare time for over 16 years and I’m based in Glasgow, UK.
Ethan is a freelance 3D artist working with us on the project. He got involved a couple of years ago and has transformed the look of the game since the original prototype. He runs his own games company, Virtuoso Neomedia, and is currently working on the upcoming titles Killer Auto and Blazing Legion: Ignition.
Dicky is a musical guru who regularly tours the world as guitarist for Scritti Politti and Dream Themes. He also writes his own material as Bearcraft and dabbles as a sound designer for TV and games. Dicky is based in Bristol, UK and he is responsible for the sound FX in Yucatan.
Victor is a sociologist and video games writer based in Mexico City. He joined the team as a consultant and writer to make sure we have that authentic Mexican vibe, and make sure the story elements and dialogue are suitably mind-bending.

I’ve been working on Yucatan for 3 ½ years now, in my spare time, using my own money to pay for art, sound, travelling to events, and everything else. I believe in paying for good work, and I need to raise some money to pay for the remaining artwork and sound.

We have been working on the game for a while and a lot of hard work is done. There are always challenges in games development, and it can be hard to give super accurate time estimates.
