Whether it’s Emma Stone being cast as a quarter-Chinese, quarter-Pacific Islander character or all-American Matt Damon protecting the Great Wall of China, “whitewashing” has been a hot topic lately. We, the filmmakers of Rice on White, are huge movie fans (and big fans of Stone and Damon btw) but we also would like to see a world where Asian-Americans are fairly represented in television and cinema.

Social media outrage and online petitions can be helpful - we’ve participated in our share of both - but we thought it more constructive to be the change we want to see. Rice on White is the result. This is a hilarious mainstream romantic comedy / guy comedy in the same vein as films such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, “Knocked Up” and “American Pie” with something you don’t see every day: Asians leading the way instead of being cast as the sidekicks.

There aren’t many mainstream movies with Asian Americans in lead roles or even behind the camera. We hope to change that but in order to do so we need opportunities to convince Hollywood studios that Asian American films can be successful. At the end of the day though, this is a movie, not a political statement. We think we have a funny and entertaining movie starring Asian-Americans that could be a crossover hit popular with audiences from all backgrounds. We humbly ask for your support.

Many movie projects here on Kickstarter are seeking funds to make their movie from start to finish. We actually have the vast majority of our movie already shot and roughly edited. Since it’s a self-financed film and post-production resources aren’t free, we’re requesting your support to help us finish our movie.

Our to-do list includes:

  • Pick up scenes, insert shots, exterior transition shots
  • Finished edit of the movie
  • Music (composer and song rights)
  • ADR (additional dialogue replacement)
  • Sound Editing
  • Sound Mix
  • Color correction
  • Conversion of the film to DCP format (for projection in theaters)

THE RICE ON WHITE TEAM

Talun Hsu (center)
Talun Hsu (center)

Talun Hsu (director/producer) - Talun is a veteran of independent films. Being a writer, director and producer, Talun knows all the tricks of the trade to make things happen. This graduate of UCLA’s film program has directed and produced music videos for top international artists. Talun has worked with name actors such as legendary Sonny Chiba, Judd Nelson, and Robert Davi. His film credits include “Gedo” (director, writer), “Body Count” (director), “Witchcraft V: Dance with the Devil” (director), “Lethal Eviction” (line producer) and “Finding Madison” (producer).

Joe Ho & Brent Tonick (writers/producers/cast) - Joe & Brent are just like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck... but more attractive. They are lifelong friends who have been writing and acting together since they were teenagers. The two started working together in high school when they collaborated on their first writing venture creating a controversial (and unintentionally comedic) play about drug abuse called (no joke) “Tragic Fate”. While in college, Joe and Brent along with another fellow actor formed an improv and sketch comedy group that performed in front of packed houses in Ventura County for several years. During those years, Joe and Brent wrote a large amount of material for their shows which helped them to develop a sharp understanding of comedy.

Joe began working as a professional actor soon after attending Cal State University Northridge where he concentrated his studies in business marketing. He has a versatile body of work ranging from stage to film to TV. Joe has guest starred on TV shows such as “Charmed”, “The Drew Carey Show” and “Beverly Hills, 90210”. His feature film credits as an actor include “Finding Madison” (also the Line Producer) and two films that competed at The Sundance Film Festival: “Garden State” and “Green Dragon”. As a producer, Joe has nearly a decade of experience as a digital producer working for major television studio networks. Joe has high hopes riding on Rice on White to help him achieve his dream of becoming the male Vietnamese American Tina Fey.

In addition to Brent’s acting and writing skills, he has worked in the ultra glamourous fields of banking and health insurance. Though not Asian by birth, Brent has earned an “Honorary Asian Card” after many drunken nights on the Koreatown Karaoke scene.

Eddie Mui (right)
Eddie Mui (right)

Eddie Mui (associate producer) - Eddie was a working actor in his hometown of Seattle performing in various main stage shows before moving to LA to focus more on television and film. In the past few years he has made the transition into being a producer on four independent feature films; Rice on White, “Bloodhound”, “Unidentified”, and “Someone I Used to Know”.

Fiona Gubelmann
Fiona Gubelmann

Fiona Gubelmann (cast) - Fiona is a ferociously talented actress with a long list of credits to her name both in television and film. You may recognize Fiona from her series regular role in the American version of “Wilfred”. In addition to her role in Rice on White, you’ll soon see her in Netflix’s remake of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom “One Day at a Time”. She is currently filming “Daytime Divas," the Vanessa Williams scripted series for VH1 inspired by Star Jones’ book "Satan Sisters: A Novel of Fiction".

Jun Kim (right)
Jun Kim (right)

Jun Kim (cast) - A multilingual and multi-ethnic former stock broker, Jun Kim was born and raised in Hong Kong. He is a graduate of the International School in Hong Kong and holds a philosophy degree from Wake Forest University. With mainstream movie credits in Korea, Jun made his American film debut starring in “West 32nd ” alongside John Cho and Grace Park and most recently guest starred in the Netflix series “Sense8”. You can also catch him in the short film, “Blind Devotion,” with over 22 million views on YouTube. After working on Rice on White, Jun can now fake an orgasm more convincingly than most women.

Charles Kim (in character)
Charles Kim (in character)

Charles Kim (cast) - A native Angeleno, Charles Kim did not start acting for paying audiences until he moved to Washington State, where he caught "the acting bug" while attending law school. His first performance was in Neil Simon's "Rumours," as Glenn Cooper, and since then, he has accumulated a resume in live sketch comedy spanning 14 years, in addition to other appearances on stage, television and film. He is proud to be a part of Rice on White, his only performance in any film with both his shirt and pants off at the same time, with another person.

Kathy Uyen (left)
Kathy Uyen (left)

Kathy Uyen (cast) - a Vietnamese American actress, producer, and screenwriter who is best known for her leading roles in Vietnamese cinema. She has twice been the recipient of prestigious Vietnamese film industry Golden Kite Awards as Best Supporting Actress in Victor Vu's "Passport to Love (2009), and for Best Leading Actress in "How to Fight in Six Inch Heels" (2013) directed by Ham Tran – a film she also produced and co-wrote. She currently resides in Ho Chi Minh City, where besides acting she is also active as a live event MC and as a goodwill ambassador for various charitable causes (including road safety, gender equality, and Operation Smile).

Brian Drolet
Brian Drolet

Brian Drolet (cast) - an actor/comedian/writer/producer, Brian also was a cast member of season one of MTV’s smash hit “The Hills" among his extensive list of acting credits. As a comedian he has performed all over L.A. including at The Improv, The Comedy Store, and The Laugh Factory. As a writer/producer, Brian is veteran of independent feature films ("Dumbbells" and "2 Dudes and a Dream") and a digital comedy series ("Cinedopes").

Risks and challenges

There are always risks and challenges in making independent movies. No risk, no reward (no pun intended). The good news with RICE ON WHITE is that we've already shot a vast majority of the movie, so that helps reduce the number of potential obstacles. We have carefully budgeted the cost of every element needed to finish the movie. Unlike when shooting a film from scratch, there is a very limited risk of going over budget during post-production, especially in a film that is not dependent on visual effects.

We will do our best to meet the delivery estimates for the Rewards but please bear in mind that our hands may be tied due to film festival and/or film distributor restrictions. If we do get ourselves into those situations, it’s likely a good problem to have for the movie (it means we have landed a major festival debut and/or distribution), but please know we’ll do everything within our power to deliver our Kickstarter Rewards as close to the promised time as possible.

There has been a lot of passion and sweat invested into RICE ON WHITE by many people who have gotten us this far. We have to finish this movie. We really hope we can find enough supporters to contribute the funds to give this movie a chance to make audiences laugh and enjoy the outrageous RICE ON WHITE revolution!

Pick How You Will Appear in End Credits

Our favorite reward! You pick the fictional job title you want to be credited for in our end credits. The only limitations are that 1) it can’t be a real job that someone else did on the movie (you can’t call yourself the director, for example), 2) first come, first served (if someone else already picked the title, you’ll need to choose something else), and 3) it must be within our very wide limits of “good taste”. We are pretty open and don’t offend easily but use your judgment here because we reserve the right to reject any title we find offensive.
Here are some helpful examples we came up with that you could pick if you wanted: Butt Double, Boobie Wrangler, Masturbation Consultant, Kung Fu Grip, Reproduction Assistant, Fart Director, Break-Up Artist, Large Unit Director, Pubic Hair Stylist, Fourteenth Assistant Director, Visual Defects Artist, Boner Producer, Fluffer, Cunning Linguist, Distributor... of Condoms, Areola Photography, Pubic Relations, etc.
Plus you'll get your choice of a Blu-Ray or DVD once the movie is ready for release, Kickstarter-Exclusive poster & T-shirt, digital download, screenplay PDF, and a FB mention!
