The Get More For Coaches - Break Kickstarter Book Launch
8/14/19 - Letter from an Editor
I am one of the editors at Castle Quay Books. I've read through your manuscript and have the edits ready for you.
First, let me say that I really enjoyed the book! Your writing style is engaging and refreshingly casual. I think you use your stories really well, too. Specifically, the stories never seem to be filler but always have a good point that illustrates and complements your theory sections. Further, your stories make the point in a way that theory alone could not--and this is really excellent. Your willingness to be personal and to share the lessons you've learned (not just what you've done right) is also a refreshingly humble approach that is not often found in leadership books. As for targeting an audience of coaches, I think you've done really well in this area--I know from your writing that you were considering writing to all leaders but I think you made the right choice to narrow your audience. As a word of encouragement, I've asked many different leaders I really respect for a recommended book and many (if not most!) times they directed me to a book written by or for a coach. So although your target audience is more narrow, I believe your book will be well received by a wider audience. I have definitely learned several good principles myself--and am now applying them even as a mom in my leadership of little daughter! :)
My name is Joby Slay and I am the author of GET MORE FOR COACHES. 15 years ago I created an acronym to help me easily recall what I observed and experienced to be the most important principles of effective leadership and coaching. That acronym has become the Get More Formula I use in my coaching to help motivate my players and create momentum with my teams.
I would like you to join me in casting a BOLD vision. With your help and this Kickstarter campaign, my goal is to get this Get More Formula into the hands of one million coaches over the next 15 years. The GET MORE FOR COACHES book will attract leaders, managers, and coaches by teaching them an easy to apply formula for motivating and empowering people to achieve more.
Above all else I want to equip and inspire coaches to motivate and empower the players on their teams to get more out of their talents and potential.
The manuscript is being published by Castle Quay Books and is roughly 50,000 words and estimated to be about 190 pages in length. The size will most likely be 6x9 and perfect bound. A fellow Castle Quay Books author was awarded Best Book of the Year at the 2019 World Guild for one of their recently published works. The publisher has agreed to create a special FOUNDER'S CLUB EDITION for our initial run of books through this Break Kickstarter campaign.
GET MORE FOR COACHES, written by Joby Slay, lays out a logical and uncomplicated approach for coaches to implement in their coaching style that goes beyond just developing a successful team. The book goes beyond coaching philosophy introducing concepts, along with examples, that are easily adapted to a coach’s own approach that are sure to raise the coach’s impact on the kids they coach, both on and off the field. The unexpected and beautiful value I found in Joby’s coaching philosophy is the combination of simple concepts that exponentially increase the impact that each concept in the GET MORE FORMULA has alone.
Joby’s ability to combine the concepts, formula, and personal stories made it extremely easy for me to take away actionable improvements to my own process when coaching kids. The book had a great combination of education, motivation, and humor. I recommend coaches, and parents alike, read the book. For those that do read it, I am positive the readers will take notes as I found myself doing when reading GET MORE FOR COACHES.

Our major challenge in youth coaching today is the majority of coaches are unequipped. I've seen estimates stating there are approximately 3.5 million youth coaches in America. An article by Jacob Bogage published in the Washington Post on September 6, 2017 titled Youth sports study: Declining participation, rising costs and unqualified coaches cited a study by the Alpine Institute stating only 30% of youth coaches have received training in effective motivational techniques and 31% in sports skills/tactics. This leaves 2.5 million coaches feeling overwhelmed and under equipped to effectively motivate and coach our youth. Get More for Coaches focuses on probably the most under served of the categories in equipping coaches with an effective motivational technique.
We face the challenge of a society where technology has both brought us closer together and at the same time drawn us further apart. We have the ability to communicate easier than ever before, but struggle to keep the focus of our youth with so many things competing for their attention. How do we help them stay on task when it’s so easy to move on to the next thing when they face adversity? How do we still challenge them to strive for a goal and achieve more than they maybe thought possible?
In a world where social media influencers are all the rage, have we forgotten about maybe the most powerful influencer in a person’s life? The coach. The coach is still one of the greatest influencers in an adolescent’s life. The coach will have the opportunity to have the undivided attention of a youth for an hour or two at a time, without the distractions of tablets and technology, several times a week! Parents can struggle to find that much connected time with their children. It has become obvious to me that I must share my Get More coaching philosophy with other coaches and help equip them with a tool to move their players from motivation to empowerment.
I coached my first sports team 25 years ago at the age of 17. I imagine I’ve had the privilege to coach a few hundred young souls over those 25 years and influenced them in a positive way. I hoped they were left with confidence and belief in their ability to do more in life. I expect I will continue to coach the next 15 years and will have another 300 kids approximately run through our program. My goal will be to instill in each one of them that they have the ability to Get More out of themselves in this athletic endeavor and achieve and Get More in life. If I’m successful I’ve dropped a few rocks into the pond that will ripple out with lasting effects. Then I thought what if I could share this formula I’ve used to Get More with my players and teams with 100 other coaches and in 15 years we’ve directly encouraged 3,000 youth to Get More out of their talents and potential. Then I had a really BOLD vision! What if I write this book and could get this Get More Formula into the hands of 1,000,000 coaches, managers, and leaders over the next 15 years?! Now we have the potential to positively impact over 300,000,000 people over the next decade and a half and we’ve changed a generation!
It sounds so crazy when I say it, but then I remember this poem I always share with my team each year.
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it! - William Hutchinson Murray
Please join me in being BOLD and launching Get More For Coaches to the coaches and leaders that are daily in the lives of our youth now. Help me equip them with this resource to motivate, encourage and empower the coach in effectively coaching our next generation of leaders and innovators.
Alright team! Here is the plan. A big goal for me would be to Break the Break Kickstarter and rally coaches, aspiring coaches, athletic directors, parents and supporters to surpass all other Break Kickstarter publishing campaigns. My primary goal is to fund the launch of the publishing and initial orders of books so we can start getting the physical copy of the book and E-Book into coaches hands before the end of the year. Let's show the world the impact and influence of coaching in action.
Through this campaign we are preselling copies of the book so you can reserve copies of the book for yourself and others. We have several different campaigns. We have coach and supporter rewards where you can order 1 - 4 books and give the gift of the book to your coaching staff and other coaches. My favorite is the athletic director and club director package where directors can equip and encourage their coaches with the gift of the book for their school, club or recreational sports program. We have larger packages where we can bring 100 - 1000 copies of the book to your organization or association to speak and present on the topics of Get More For Coaches and the Get More Formula. We also include Do More, Be More, Get More wristbands with most packages and we have a Get More coach's stainless steel water bottle we include in one of the coach packages.
FREE shipping is included in all the rewards!
If we hit $50,000 on our stretch goal we will be able to provide every donor of our Break Kickstarter campaign with a download code for a FREE copy of the E-Book version of GET MORE FOR COACHES.
Where the money goes
In our initial campaign goal of $29,375 we are accounting for all aspects of the book production process from design and editing, printing and delivery to your door. The book is already into editing and typesetting and expected to be ready for print by end of August. Our initial print run of 2,000 books is included in that cost. The breakdown works out to approximately 33% for author expenses, initial design costs, and Kickstarter fees. 33% for book printing and production costs and 33% for fulfillment and delivery (shipping costs).
Our reward pricing is structured for us to be able to fully scale up and deliver on any rewards over our initial funding goal no matter how high we go!!!
Just 1,000 supporters at our lowest Supporters Group Rewards level gets us to our goal!

Risks and challenges
