Hi, and thank you for investigating our project.
This project aims to raise $4,000 to publish the second book in a series of historical fiction novels.
I’m Rob McLaren, the author, and Matthew Lin is the amazing illustrator.
I wrote the first story of the Jobert series, Brothers of the Capucine, in nine months, then spent the next nine months learning, with Matthew’s awesome support, how to publish a story into a book in both print and e-book versions.
All those timings and cost are now nailed down. While I learnt how to publish my first story, I wrote my second story, Duty on a Lesser Front.
Now it is time, with your help, to publish Book 2, Duty on a Lesser Front.
The story is the second in a series of historical fiction novels based on the combat experience of André Jobert, a veteran French cavalry officer, during the twenty-three years of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars.
In the style of Bernard Cornwell's enduring character Richard Sharpe, this is an unflinching soldier’s tale, for those who can stomach the filth of the late-1790’s, stand in the battle-line and handle a whiff of grapeshot. You can learn more about the story at
REWARDS FOR THE BACKERS
Upon the project succeeding, as a backer, you will immediately receive either the electronic or print version of Brothers of the Capucine (Book 1)
By the end of August, you'll receive your copy of the book you helped bring to life, Duty on a Lesser Front (Book 2).
There is also an exclusive offer only through Kickstarter – hard-cover versions - not available through any other source.
At the Premium level, you can be rewarded with an exclusive collector's item of two exquisitely painted 28mm Napoleonic figures, Jobert and his trumpeter, on a single base. The figures will be very similar to this existing miniature figure of Jobert (image below).
Matthew and I have already published Book 1, Brothers of the Capucine, together, so we feel very confident that we know our timeline to publish Book 2, Duty on a Lesser Front. The Kickstarter campaign will finish at the end of March 2019.
By the end of April 2019, while you are receiving your Book 1 rewards, Matthew will have completed the ten internal illustrations for Book 2.
The illustration below is an example of the artwork Matthew creates to enhance the story. This map appears in Book 1, Brothers of the Capucine.
Matthew Lin, and his incredible art, can be found at
By the end of May 2019, Matthew will have completed the typesetting and layout of Book 2.
By the end of June 2019, I will have edited the typeset book, while Matthew completes the cover artwork.
By the end of July 2019, Matthew will have uploaded the files into www.Lulu.com, the self-publishing website, and converted the print files to e-book files.
By the end of August, you will have received your second round of rewards.
Throughout the publishing process I'll be updating you as to our progress.
Having published Book 1, Brothers of the Capucine, we’ve now created a ‘cookie-cutter’ process for the remaining seventeen books in the Jobert series.
What is $4,000 needed for?
Matthew and I know the publishing of Book 2, Duty on a Lesser Front, will cost:
$700 to typeset and layout
$1800 for ten internal illustrations
$500 for cover artwork
$600 to covert to e-book files
$400 for Kickstarter fees
WHO AM I?
I am an ex-armoured cavalry officer in the Australian Army, a veteran of overseas service, a passionate horseman, a daddy and one of the local under-9's netball coaches.
I started writing the first book in the Jobert series, Brothers of the Capucine, in mid 2017. I seem to be completing a new story every nine months.
You can contact me at www.jobert.site, even if it's just to say 'Hi!'.
I look forward to updating you regularly throughout the project’s progress.
Thank you for considering this project,
