About this project
Be part of the creation of a new concept in opera: Plastic Flowers.
It's the story of Penelope, a woman who is going through an emotional crisis as she looks back on her life.
Check our website: plasticflowerstheopera.com
This is the second opera by the Brazilian composer João Macdowell. His opera Tamandua was the first opera in Portuguese ever to be produced in the USA. "Plastic Flowers" is sung almost entirely in English with the exception of a little Spanish tune by Penelope's Cuban father.
We believe that opera today is more relevant than ever. It is a genre that allows for mixing and experimenting with every art form, including new technologies, for total immersion in the scene. We believe that new opera companies deserve a repertoire that is relevant to contemporary audiences.
The concert premiere will be in New York City:
Baruch's Engelman Recital Hall: 151 E 25th St, New York, New York 10010-2313(entrance between Lexington and 3rd Aves.)
December 17th, 2012, 7:30pm.
We are giving access to discounted tickets to all backers!
Starring Abby Powell in the lead role, Han Chen on piano and Luigi Porto on live electronics. We are very excited about this concert, as it will be the first time all the music will be performed live and we want to record it all. It's a World Premiere!
You can see a music video of a scene from Plastic Flowers on youtube:
This is about pop culture aiming to be eternal and beautiful, like Plastic Flowers.
The kickstarter campaign will help to pay for the concert's production costs as well as some of the video and audio recording fees, which will create the CDs, DVDs and the book, complete with the full score, libretto and some extras!
We want to record the audio with the best equipment for classical music and with a few cameras, so that watching it will be fun and dynamic. If we go above the minimum goal, we can raise the bar on every element of the production, e.g., rent high-end equipment and invest more in the book. The book has 136 pages of music plus the libretto. If we go above our goal we will boost the whole package. Please check our Stretch Goals below.
The mezzo-soprano Abby Powell passed a very tough audition process to be cast as our Penelope, the protagonist of this opera. Your contribution can make possible the recording of this performance, which is only the first step in having it fully staged next year. (Just to be clear: This time we are only doing a concert of the music, though Abby is so good she is always singing in the skin of the character.)
Check out the perks and come to the world premiere, a one time only event!
Should we go over the minimum goal, there is a lot that we can do with the extra money:
1. Next level recording equipment: increased detail and realism in the audio.
2. Next level post production: more mixing and editing hours for audio and video, for higher finishing quality on all the items that you will get.
3. Improved packaging: More pages, photos and info included on CD and DVD.
4. Improved book: More pages, photos, visual art, critical text and also better print, better paper, better binding.
5. Dvd Bonus tracks: We could include more animation and music videos like the one that you can see now on youtube. A high quality version of this one is already included as a bonus track in the DVD that you will receive.
Risks and challenges
Backers should expect to receive their CDs DVDs, books and other items as soon as Christmas or as late as March 2013. If we go above the mark we can put a bit more into the product, which might delay our schedule a bit. There will be post-production, we will need to mix the sound, edit the video and print the books. We expect to move fast in the process, as we have a very clean plan to get it all done. Still, we will depend on other professionals and there could be delays that are not under our control. Please be patient if that happens, it will probably mean that you are getting a better product. We will keep our backers posted of the progress, here on kickstarter and at Joao's blog:
Of course we want to send out our perks ASAP, so we can start working on staging the full production of Plastic Flowers. At that time everyone will already know the music by heart. Yay!
