Hey Everyone! My name is Joanie Leeds and I am a nationally touring singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, NY specializing in Kindie-Rock (that's kids music for y'all not hip with the lingo...yet).
I am what you call an DIY artist (do it yourself). Though I have released 4 kids CDs, a DVD and 2 grownup CDs since 2000, I have never been signed to a label and I've done it all on my own... until NOW! I am excited to invite you to be my label.... to help create my next project- My 5th Kids CD of original music- BANDWAGON. Please watch the video above for info and funny band bloopers and read on for the full story.
Once upon a time, a two year old birthday girl grabbed the microphone away from
the party performer and sang Annie's "Tomorrow" to all her
party guests at the top of her lungs. I never once looked back. Countless voice lessons and musicals through out my childhood led me to attend the Musical Theater program at Syracuse University where I started writing
original music. During my senior year, I recorded my first original
CD and headed straight to NYC the day after graduating. After countless day jobs supporting my singer/songwriter career, my whole world turned around when I took at job managing and teaching at Gymboree Play and Music and realized, (light-bulb!) Kids are hilarious, honest and adorable. I was hooked and never looked back.
In 2006, I started a birthday party business, took several jobs teaching music in nursery schools and wrote music for kids, nonstop. I found my calling! In 2007- I released City Kid, 2008- Challah, Challah, 2009-City Kid Live DVD, 2010- I'm A Rock Star and 2011 What A Zoo. In 2012- I got married!!!! (No, that's not a CD but it was worth the wait).
With my amazing booking and publicity team, we've reached National audiences by appearing in tons of 'TOP 10' lists and 'Best Kid CD' lists in People Magazine, Parents Magazine, Washington Post, Time Out NY Kids, NY Times, NY Post and many others...
So now, I am working on my newest album, Bandwagon, and I need your help to make it happen. I've set the goal at $15,000 but the actual costs will be more like $30,000 when it's all said and done. With all the amazing listeners, supporters, teachers, students and fan families I've met over the years, I am optimistic that we will meet and SURPASS my set goal. (Currently crossing fingers and toes) The catch: Kickstarter is all or nothing! If I DON'T meet my goal, I won't get anything (and your card won't be charged either) so please consider some of these amazing THANK YOU PACKAGES to the right ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
The $15,000 (but really $30K) will help pay for the following:
Kickstarter Fees- 8-10% of my goal goes directly to Kickstarter and Amazon for hosting and transaction fees.
Recording- Grammy Award WINNER Dean Jones will be producing, engineering, and mixing Bandwagon. Studio time and all hours spent there recording 15 tunes will add up for sure.
Musicians- These songs won't play themselves. Dean has put together the most amazing group of musicians who will rock the 15 tracks. I also have to pay for their meals. They are boys, they get hungry all the time.
Mastering- I only work with the master of mastering and that is none other than Alan Douches with West West Side Music. He has been my go-to guy for most of my albums.
CD Duplication- Oasis Duplication has manufactured every project I've ever done since the year 2000. They make all the CD copies and print the artwork and CD booklets.
Publicity- Elizabeth Waldman Frazier with Waldmania PR is the Queen of publicity for children's artists. I'm not sure when she sleeps because she is the hardest worker I know. She will tell the world that Bandwagon is awesome.
Photography- Shervin Lainez is THE photog right now. He has photographed Regina Spektor, Tegan and Sara, OK GO, The Shins, Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird and Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, WHAAAAT!?
Graphic Design and Art- Gabrielle Gewirtz of Inside Wide Designs is an old dear friend of mine from the ole' Bitter End days. She will be coming up with all the beautiful designs for the CD Cover, Booklet, T-Shirt designs and updating my new press page.
Merchandise- New awesome T-Shirts are in the works and this will help cover cost of printing in all the sizes I'll need for kids and adults.
Printing Updating Press Materials- I will be sending all my press material to the the printer for high quality printing for my publicist to include in my press packages along with my CD for the fine folk at radio stations, newspapers, magazines and bloggers to read. They use fancy paper and it ain't cheap.
Website Updates- My fabulously talented web designer, Mac Cauley, will be updating my website with all the new music and content.
Rental Car to the Studio- I live in NYC and don't own a car. Each time I drive to and from the studio in upstate NY, Alamo gets a small fortune from me. Grrr.
Music Videos- I want to release more music videos for your kids to watch. They are expensive to produce and you need a professional to make a good one (case in point, did you watch the video I made above? That was 100% Joanie made, can you tell?, Ha!)
I forgot to mention some special guests you will hear on Bandwagon:
Jonatha Brooke!!!! (my idol), Justin Lansing of the Grammy Winning kids group, The Okee Dokee Brothers and beautiful folk singer, Rachel Loshak.
Q- What can I do to help if I can not afford to donate financially?
A- Good question! You can absolutely help by spreading the word. Please share this Kickstarter link with all your friends and family over email and post the link on Facebook, Twitter and any other site you can think of!If you tell 50 people who tell 50 people, you can see how this can work! If you tell 50 people who tell 50 people, you can see how this may just work! Remember the Kickstarter only goes for 30 DAYS so don't delay, please!
Q- I have $$ and I want to help but I don't have kids! What should I do?
A- Are you an Aunt? Uncle? Grandparent? Do you have a friend or co-worker with kids? Gifting them with one of these awesome prizes would be the best present ever. Any prize you see is TOTALLY transferable. I will get all the information from you and will send it to wherever and to whoever you'd like!
Let's KICK this thing out of the park!
Risks and challenges
If I meet my financial goals through Kickstarter, I am confident that this project will release in late June or July as intended. If there are any delays, I will be in touch immediately with donors however we have a very rock hard schedule in place with a wonderful team. If I do not raise the funds through Kickstarter of course, it will be difficult to release on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
