TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF
Hi! I'm Joanie Leeds and I have the best job on the planet!
I write and perform kids music with my band, Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights rocking out at schools, music festivals, performing arts centers, museums & rock music venues across the country. I have released 5 CDs and 1 DVD to date and our songs are heard on many radio stations across the country including Sirius/XM Kids Place Live. Our CDs have been giving top honors and put on various "Best Kids CD" Lists - People Magazine, Parents Magazine, Washington Post, NY Post, Time Out NY Kids...
WHY AM I PRODUCING THROUGH KICKSTARTER...AGAIN!?
Our last album, 'Bandwagon' was Kickstarter Funded and once released...it was chosen as People Magazines Best Kids CD for 2013 and won The USA Songwriting Contest! The album was a huge success because of you! With the funds raised, we were able to pay for most of the costs for the album. I was also able to release 14 music videos (I would have never been able to do that completely out of pocket) Looking back at the process, I realize that it is the BEST way to get our fans involved, spread the word about our CD and get everyone excited about the project BEFORE it is released. We want to involve fans in what we are doing every step along the way and offer personalized products and experiences to everyone, no matter how far away you live.
For 'Good Egg', we’ve started with a minimum goal of $20,000 and we’ve come up with a pretty sweet rewards for anyone who pledges within the 30 day campaign. For those of you who aren’t familiar with how Kickstarter works, if we don’t reach our goal of $20,000, we don’t get ANY of the money (you won't get any of your prizes and your credit card is refunded)- That would be so sad for everyone. Let's NOT let that happen. Every dollar counts and spreading the word is crucial. We can do it!
HOW IS THIS ALBUM DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER ALBUMS?
These are with out a doubt THE best songs I have ever written. While the tunes are totally appropriate for little toddlers, the songs will also strike a chord (literally!) with older kids well into their tween years and beyond. I challenged myself to write deeper creative lyrics, play on words- even some subject matter chosen by the fans. When it was time to go into the studio, it was a no-brainer to again work with GRAMMY WINNING PRODUCER, Dean Jones. BUT this time, different from all other albums previously recorded, I brought my entire band- THE NIGHTLIGHTS- into the studio. Yup, all 5 of us stayed in a cozy Bed and Breakfast near New Paltz and for 4 days lived and breathed this album. The musicians you see at our live shows are the same ones playing on the tracks. HOLY MOLY, they sound GOOD.
WHAT ARE THE SONGS ABOUT?
'Good Egg' is an album that dances around many subjects and genres. I'm never one to stay stuck in one genre because I know kids love em all- (Rock, Pop, Funk, Soul, Ska, GoGo, Gospel...) and frankly, so do I! 'Good Egg' contains songs about Brooklyn hipsters, trips to the doctor, dressing up in costumes, dinosaurs, stories from our travels, staying away from germs (EW!), Drummer Dan (YAY!), the Dads in our lives (fan request) and many other subjects your kids of all ages will relate to. And did I mention we have some GUEST VOCALISTS? The one and only- Mista Cookie Jar is rapping on 'Drummer Dan' and Jacob Stein from The Grammy Nominated band, The Pop Ups is singing a duet with me on 'The World is Your Oyster'.
$20,000 IS A LOT OF MONEY. WHERE DOES IT ALL GO? SHOES?
No, not shoes. Sadly, $20,000 will not cover all of the costs to make 'Good Egg' but it will cover the majority of the expenses. When an independent artist makes an album, it takes about a year to get it right (and 30K). Here is where all the money goes: Recording, Musicians, Mastering, CD Duplication, Publicity, Photography, Marketing, Graphic Design and Art, Merchandise (T-Shirts, shaky eggs, stickers...), Press Materials, Website Updates & Music Videos & Kickstarter Fees. We do this all on our own.
Our stretch goal is $30,000. If there are any funds above $20,000, they will go directly into the rest of the Good Egg costs and our next DVD 'Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, Live at Symphony Space' AND more music videos. This is in the works for 2015!
OK, SOUNDS GOOD BUT WHAT DO I GET?

I couldn't even begin to do any of this without you, the amazing fans. You support me in ways I can't even begin to explain. Thank YOU from the bottom of my heart! You are ALL Good Eggs!
Q- I don't know how to use the interwebs. Can I just send you a check?A- First of all, my Bubby is pushing 90 and if she can figure it out on her own, you can too! :) While sending a check is also fabulous and I will certainly not turn checks away, I am unable to contribute to my own Kickstarter Goal so I won't have any way to take your check and put it toward my $20,000 goal. It would be easier if you pledge right here. All ya need is to create a user name and password, pretty standard for the internet these days. Then you choose which package you want and follow instructions until you check out with Amazon, that's how you'll pay. If you are still having problems either contact someone with internet savvy'ness or you can contact me directly, I'm happy to help!
Q- What can I do to help if I can not afford to support financially?
A- Good question! You can absolutely help by spreading the word to EVERYONE you know. Please share this Kickstarter link with all your friends and family (a good ole personal email is best) but feel free to post the link on Facebook, Twitter and any other site you can think of! If you email 50 people who email 50 people, you can see how this can work!
Remember the Kickstarter only goes for 30 DAYS so don't delay.
Q- I have $$ and I want to help but I don't have kids!
A- Are you an Aunt? Uncle? Grandparent? Do you have a friend or co-worker with kids? Gifting them with one of these awesome prizes would be the best present ever. Any prize you see is TOTALLY transferable. I will get all the information from you and will send it to wherever and to whoever you'd like!
Q- I picked a package but I want to give a little more money. You are SO close to reaching your goal and I want to help give you a boost. Can I do that?
A- You sure are a 'Good Egg', aren't you? You can always go into your reward and add to what you have already given until the 30 day campaign is over. That's so sweet of ya!
Risks and challenges
From our previous Kickstarter experience, all I can say is... it's like having a full time job. The amount of out-reach you have to do each and every day for 30 days it is very time consuming. Word of mouth is hard and we really do depend on our fans to help as much as possible through social media and emailing your friends for the short 30 days will help. I realize having just completed a campaign last year that a few people may think..."Wait, I just supported her last campaign. Another one so soon?". What I'd say to that is... each project is different and sites like Kickstarter is the to make releasing an album yearly possible. I created new and exciting rewards so you can support and choose something totally different this time 'round. I hope you'll take this journey with me again and if this is your first time, welcome aboard!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
