Open Fiction Submissions!!
Only three days to go!! Can we get a good rallying cry going? Share the link with your friends! Help us spread the word! Mention our awesome authors and essayists. Wouldn't it ROK to hit $30k by the end?
And now what you've been waiting for: Open submissions!! We have some guidelines authors need to follow, though, so you'll want to pay attention (and this is all standard submissions stuff for pretty much all publications):
--Stories must feature a well-developed female protagonist who is not just a cardboard cutout. She needs to have a clear goal, motivation, and conflict. She has a background that shaped her to be who she is.
--Stories must be 7k words or less. This is a hard limit for new submissions.
--Stories MUST BE in standard manuscript format. That mean Times New Roman or comparable, 12 point font, one inch margins, double spaced, indent before paragraphs...well, basically, what is given here as an example. http://www.sfwa.org/2008/11/manuscript-preparation/ This makes life easier for everyone. Please send manuscripts in .doc format, and make sure all your contact info is on there.
--Send story submissions as attachments to email@example.com, with the subject heading "HNF SUBMISSION: Author Name, Title." In your email, give us a short bio and let us know about your previous publications and any other relevant facts.
--Please do not contact editors by way of Facebook or other social media. Email is always best. Questions about format, etc are fine, but please do not ask us if your idea works, etc. Consider this opportunity as you would any other short fiction venue: You don't query them about ideas first, you just send them the best story you have.
--Don't be too anxious about it: the best stories come from an honest place within. Let your personality and voice shine through. Don't try too hard, and don't let self-doubt master you! We are excited to receive entries--We want to see what kind of awesome stories you all have to tell! We aren't looking for PERFECTION, we want stories that will touch our hearts, make our souls soar to adventure, and inspire people. We can work with you to fix some things as long as the story is sound. That being said, of course you should try your best. Have a couple friends read the story over before you send it. Don't send us a first draft.
--The window for submissions is SEPTEMBER 15-OCTOBER 15, 2016. Anything sent outside of this window will be deleted unread.
Thanks so much for all of your support, it means the world to us! Let's make these last three days really count, and be sure to send us your best starting Sept 15!
